Do you know if you have a "cool" dog or a "warm" dog, energetically speaking?

A "cool" dog is often one that will seek out the warm spots in the house, lie in the sun for a long time, and snuggle in blankets during cold days.

A "warm" dog will sleep on tiles or concrete, stays in the shade, pants when it's above 70 degrees outside, and doesn't snuggle for very long.

When you know which dog you have, you can feed and supplement with foods that are warming to cool dogs and cooling to warm dogs.

"Cool" dog foods: mussels/mollusks, lamb/sheep (particularly after surgery), venison, chicken, wild-caught salmon, goat
"Cool" dog supplements: ginger, quinoa, cinnamon (in small amounts), ashwagandha, rosemary, turmeric

"Warm" dog foods: pork, duck, bison, whitefish, grass-fed beef
"Warm" dog supplements: reishi and cordyceps mushrooms, dandelion, chamomile, chickweed, plantain, cleavers, wheatgrass, lemon balm

Simply speaking, you can take any of these whole plants and steep them like a tea. Then use the strained liquid on your dog's food if they'll take it that way. Start with low doses to make sure it's tolerated. Or you can find these in powder, pill, or liquid form online. Just be cautious of your dosage and follow the instructions.

Meet Bella, the first “five-legged” dog we’ve seen in our 145 year history! 🤯
We were all just as floored as you likely are when we saw the X-rays! This 6-month-old puppy has dimelia, an extremely rare congenital anomaly characterized by the duplication of bones. It’s basically like an extra leg inside her right hind leg. A normal canine hind leg would have one femur, one tibia, one fibula, and 4-5 toes. X-rays of the affected leg revealed that Bella appears to have an extra femur, two tibias, two fibulas, and nine toes on her rear paw. It is the first-ever case of dimelia we’ve seen in our organization’s history, and as far as we can tell, she’s one of the *very* few documented cases of dimelia in a dog – ever!

Due to the extreme rarity of her condition, our veterinary team consulted with an outside specialist. Surgical approaches (including amputation) were considered, but there are risks of complication and she’s using the limb comfortably at this time, so the recommendation was to keep the leg as-is and continue to monitor her comfort. Her mobility is slightly affected, but she loves to go for walks and run around in our play yard. ♥

Bella is expected to be available for adoption on Friday at the WHS Kenosha Campus. We have a ton of dogs and puppies looking for new homes, but if you are looking for a true unicorn in both body and spirit, Bella might be your gal.
