This is your reminder to take a minute and just breathe. ❤️

Thank you Dill, the Husky, for this perfect picture that reminded me to stop and take a deep breath in this crazy busy thing we call life. 🥰

Happy Birthday Radar! I can’t believe he is 7 years old! He is still active, spry and playful! He is “technically” a senior but he doesn’t act like a senior. Although, he does enjoy a good nap! 😉❤️

Figured I would post a few pics of him posing and then a few pics of his true self. 🤣

I am so proud of my girl, Hula! In April, she got to fly with me in cabin for the first time. We went to a continuing education conference in Portland, OR. This girl is a rock star. Not a peep on the plane and was fabulous no matter what was happening for 4 days at the conference! ❤️👏

The first picture is of her waiting to board the plane in San Diego.

The second picture is of her and I waiting for my bag at our destination. I had her out of the carrier on leash to let her stretch her legs but instead she hopped back in after getting a much needed drink of water. 🥰

Needless to say I couldn’t be more proud!! 😁🐶🤩

Perching! This is when your dog(s) jump up on an object. It could be a boulder, bench, short cement wall, etc.

Perching is great for:
1. Creating more enrichment and fun on walks and/or hikes.
2. Letting a fearful dog perform a known behavior that will create more space from oncoming “scary” triggers (people, dogs, strollers, etc) while out and about.
3. Getting out of people’s way on walks and/or hikes to let them pass.

**Please note: Perching is for dogs that are physically able as to avoid injury. Consult your vet if you have any physical concerns about teaching this behavior.

This girl. How is she 9 years old today?!

Words can’t describe what she means to me! I am so pleased with how she continues to learn and build confidence! Just goes to show that we are never done learning and blossoming as we age! ❤️

Capture & Reward!

If you recognize and reward your dog for behaviors you like them doing on their own, then you wouldn’t have to say “no” and “don’t do that” as much.

This could be not barking, not jumping on you or guests, laying down on their bed, and chewing on a toy or bone.

Rewards can be calm praise, treats, toy play and/or affection & pets. The reward may be different for every dog and every captured behavior.

What behaviors do you like to capture & reward with your dog?

This is what walks with my dogs typically look like: Walking, sniffing and a bit of doggy parkour. 🐶😁❤️

I tend to give my dogs a lot of freedom on walks yet they are still aware that I am at the other end of the leash. I can call their names at any given time and have their full attention.

I have also taught them to check in with me when someone is approaching so that they are close and attentive when people (without or without a dog) are passing by.

*Please note that Tibbs (Coltriever) is concerned in the parkour picture. I had a treat in my hand and he was concerned as to when it was going to be delivered. 😉

Trick training can be a great way to have fun with your dog, continue to build their skill set and be able to show them off to friends and family this holiday season. 😉

In the photos, Hula is showing her dance trick (stand up and turn in a circle) and sit pretty. Aloha is showing the infamous “shake” and limp (walking with one paw in the air). 😁❤️

Conditioning a dog to have their collar grabbed can be important for many reasons. Here are a few!

- Preventing a defensive snap or bite due to a surprise collar grab.
- Interacting with children of all ages.
- Emergency situations where you have to guide them away from potential danger quickly.
- Assisting your vet or groomer so that there is less restraint and more gentle control.

If you would like any tips to get started on conditioning a positive response to a collar grab, feel free to message me!

😁

From puppy training to aggression, no training plan needs to cause fear, pain or discomfort in order to be effective.

Training should be kind and reinforcing for both ends of the leash. ❤️

This is Charlie waking up from a nap when he heard it was time to train! 😂❤️

Charlie is a tripod with an unknown history. He is an anxious guy that would literally throw himself in the air uncontrollably while barking at other dogs while on leash.

Through patience, consistency and training games, he has made huge strides and even met my dog, Hula, at our last lesson after some parallel walking and settling in the shade! 🎉

Thank you CoastView Veterinary Hospital for being involved along Charlie’s journey of life! ❤️

Happy 8th Birthday to Aloha! This girl may be a PITA but that’s what makes her so near and dear to my heart. 😂

One of the first words that a friend described her as when we adopted her at 15 weeks old was “spicy” if that tells you anything! 😜

I love her to the moon and back! ❤️

Context is everything! Most people would see this photo and think it was an aggressive display to create distance from a trigger.

However, this is what Aloha looks like as I bring a toy closer to her mouth. She is anticipating the toy being given to her so lifts her squishy lips and opens her mouth. When she’s feeling frisky, this is also how she picks up a toy from the ground after pouncing on it.

Knowing dog body language is a very important piece of the human/dog relationship. However, also knowing your individual dog’s expressions and mannerisms is important as well! 🐶

Everyone meet Cricket and Piper! Cricket is working on “all things adolescent” (😉😂) and Piper is working on calmer and more positive feelings about the doorbell.
