LCAL Rescue is an all-breed dog and bird rescue, with an emphasis on saving Boxers. We are a Platinum level GuideStar Verified Nonprofit 501(c)3. We are an all-volunteer rescue and do NOT take phone calls as we have limited time to chat while busy saving lives. We have a very structured system of working off of EMAILs ONLY to begin the process. Once your information and requests are processed/sche

duled, you will then be given a phone number to a volunteer/coordinator to assist with the process. Our adoption center is BY APPOINTMENT ONLY and an adoption application MUST BE submitted before an appointment can be scheduled to meet animals at our adoption center. For general inquiries or to schedule something other than an adoption, please email "[email protected]" and our adoption/volunteer coordinators will respond during their volunteer hours. If you do not receive a response within 48 hours, it's likely your message was not received, so please send a reminder email. To adopt an animal, the process is as follows:
1) Submit adoption application (even if you don't have an animal selected yet)

2) If you rent or have an HOA, you must submit, in writing, authorization from your landlord, property management, or HOA stating that you are authorized to have the animal size and breed that you are seeking to adopt.

3) If you have pets currently or pets in the recent past, we ask for a letter of reference from your veterinarian(s), especially since we focus on saving animals with medical needs. This allows us the opportunity to understand that you'll be willing and able to continue to provide any medical care for your newly adopted pet in the future.

4) In the event you are unable to provide an LOR from your current or past veterinarian(s), we will send a volunteer to complete a home check to ensure that your home is safely and properly set up to receive a new furry or feathered family member.

5) After ALL steps have been completed, we will schedule a meet-and-greet for you and the dogs/birds you'd like to meet. If all goes well on the meet-and-greet and you decide you want to adopt, the adoption is completed. VOLUNTEERING/FOSTERING: If you'd like to become a volunteer or foster family, you can do so by submitting a volunteer or foster application from our website. We have volunteer opportunities for openers and closers for the adoption center, dog walkers, dog handlers for adoption events, event planning, fundraising, transporting, thrift store volunteers, etc. If you are unable to adopt, foster, or volunteer but would still like to help, here are a few more ways we can use your help:

1) Select Last Chance at Life Rescue as your charity recipient through Amazon Smile when making purchases on Amazon.com.

2) Donate (or shop) gently used household goods (furnishings, appliances, books, clothing, household goods, artwork, etc.) to our thrift store -- Last Chance at Life Thrift Store 3296 Mission Ave., Oceanside. (Closed Mondays)

3) Some of the items we use daily and can ALWAYS use replenishing of are: p**p bags, laundry detergent, bleach, dog treats (no rawhides please), paper towels, and canned dog food of any kind. Since our dogs are all on a specific type of dog food that is specially ordered, we do not request dog food donations (kibble). If we do receive dry dog food donations that we cannot use, we collect all of that and donate it to another rescue in need.

4) Host a fundraiser. If you enjoy raising funds through restaurant events or product campaigns, charity events, etc., contact our fundraising coordinators to set something up. Email [email protected]

Don't be fooled by his size. Timothy the 5yo, 35lb terrier mix is is a whole lot of dog in a smaller package!A smart, physical, sweet and headstrong guy. He came to us as a stray and it seems he felt his trust had been betrayed. He was slow to relax and unwind but we're getting closer to his real personality every day.

When he first arrived he was lethargic, mopey and maybe even a little grouchy. Within a couple days he started to develop a spring to his step. Within weeks, we're up to flying leaps, fear of him climbing the fence and great curiosity of all things outdoors.

In his past life it seems he wasn't given much guidance on good citizenship but he's shown great willingness to learn the rules of the house and abide by them.

His trust issues make him a a little skeptical toward most new people. Treats will ease introductions. Ultimately, he may take a little longer to settle into a new situation than some dogs. Once relaxed though he's a physically active, fun, loving guy. Great on leash. Good in car. A patient and well behaved companion in public.

He's strong of personality too (stubborn😉) so will do best in a family willing to set and enforce rules. Still a little resource guarding but progress daily.

Happy from Stewie, our sweet 1yo beagle mix who is somehow, shockingly, still available for adoption! This dog is a huge love and will bring so much joy to his family’s life. He enjoys all people, all dogs, as well as all the snuggles, walks, naps, and adventures. He is a great size at 29lbs. He would be great with an active family and we have seen him interact with kids as young as 2. He was very friendly and excited to say hi and we were able to coach him to sit for the interaction. He’d be a fun family dog, or really a fun dog for any family/home! Please share and help us get this adorable boy adopted!

Happy to Petey!

Petey, the 1.5-year-old tri-colored terrier mix, hit the jackpot with his new dad, Brian!

Brian connected with Petey during his weekly trips to Animal Friends of the Valleys with his grandson for the cat reading program. When Petey was transferred to LCAL, Brian feared he had lost the pup for good. But fate had other plans, and he was reunited with Petey through LCAL. Clearly these two are meant to be together! 🐶❤️

Brian is an incredibly devoted dog dad, and Petey is one lucky dog whose life is now filled with love, companionship and adventure.

We're so happy to know Petey is living his best life with a dad who adores him. 💖

🐾 : Wally's New Beginning! 🐾 Sweet Wally has found his forever family, and we couldn't be happier for him! This lovable 2-year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix has captured the hearts of his new adopters, who fell in love with him at our adoption event at . While Wally was very shy when they met him, his gentle soul and big, soulful eyes were impossible to resist. By the end of the day, his adopters knew Wally was "the one." 💖

With one of his adopters working from home, Wally gets lots of companionship during the day, and the family is eager to take him on neighborhood walks, meet up with friends, and even bring him along to their favorite restaurants. Wally will also join them on their trips to Coomber Craft Wines, where his new journey began! 🍇

This sweet boy now gets to live the best life with a family who adores him and will give him all the love and care he deserves. Here's to Wally's happily ever after! 🐶💕

Folks, it is grim out there. The overcrowding crisis in our Southern California shelters is overwhelming, and the lives of many healthy, social dogs are at serious risk. 💔

We need fosters who are willing to commit to a dog in need until it finds its forever home. Without committed fosters, we simply can’t save these dogs and give them the chance they deserve.

We provide all the supplies—you provide the love and basic training to help a shelter dog become a beloved house pet. 🐾

STEWIE plans to be at the adoption event THIS SATURDAY, 10/5, from 1-4pm, at Coomber Craft Wines! Mark your calendars NOW and come by on Saturday to meet him! Stewie is a 1-year-old, 29lb beagle mix and an incredible sweet boy. He was found as a stray and brought to Animal Friends of the Valleys in Wildomar. At AFV, he was very playful, great with other dogs, easy to train, and ready to please! He also walked great on leash. We brought him into our rescue and he is now in a foster home.

His foster mom describes Stewie as "perfect"! She thinks he was someone's outside dog, because at first he would stand just outside of the sliding glass door looking at them, like he didn't think he was supposed to cross the threshold. She says he is food motivated and a quick learner. He is doing well with crate training and with going potty outside. Stewie is also snuggly and loves to be close to his people. He is a sweet, happy, loving, loveable boy who enjoys people and other dogs. PERFECT really is the best word to describe him!

Happy to the adorable Miss Korra!! Korra, the one-year-old chihuahua mix, has found her perfect forever home! 🐾💖 This sweet, playful girl captured the hearts of her new family the moment they met her. Then again, with her love for belly rubs, cuddles, and a good game of tug -- who wouldn't immediately fall for this girl??

Originally a bit scared when she was brought into the shelter as a stray, Korra warmed up quickly and showed her fun-loving personality. She thrived in her foster home and showed how much she loves playing with other dogs, running around, and giving endless affection.

Her new family, a close-knit group, was heartbroken after losing their previous dog but now feel ready to give Korra all the love and care she deserves. With different work and school schedules, there's almost always someone home to keep Korra company. They’re excited to bring her on walks and include her in family gatherings, and when they go on vacations, Korra will be right there with them, living her best life! 🏡💕

We’re overjoyed to see Korra so happy and loved, surrounded by her new family. She’s truly living the dream, and we couldn't be happier for her! 🥰

Korra loves to play! With humans... and especially with other dogs! She wants to be friends with every dog she meets, but she is also good at backing off if she can tell the other dog is "just not that into her." Korra's foster mom thinks she'd be wonderful with kids! She's gentle and loving and she is so interested and eager when she sees kids through her fence. Korra is mostly housebroken (especially when crated at night). She's good with the crate & often puts herself away. She's still young enough to have some puppy behaviors & has chewed up a few things, but once she understands something isn't a toy she learns easily & leaves it alone. Overall Korra is a sweet, playful girl! She enjoys trying to catch the spray from a hose and trying to kill the vacuum cleaner. He’s been fully trained in a board and train facility (Psycho To Sweet Custom Dog Training LLC) and is ready for his forever home. He would do great with an active owner with German shepherd experience who enjoys doing training and/or agility work with dogs. Sweet Abby the 4yo lab mix is still looking for her forever home! Though she loves to cuddle, she can get a bit too excited around small dogs and may not be the best fit for homes with young children or cats. Abby has a bit of stranger danger and can be scared by loud noises and unexpected events, but with a calm energy and consistency, she responds well. She's a pro at commands like "sit" and "go to bed," self-crates, and has been working on her physical therapy with laps in the pool, in order to rehab some nerve damage in her front limb from a being hit by a car before she came to us. Abby is a fighter and has been making great progress. If you're looking for a loving companion who just needs a bit of patience and understanding, Abby is the dog for you!
