They may salivate at all the special foods and treats we indulge in during the holidays, but did you know a lot of holiday foods can be harmful to our furry friends? Foods like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, artificial sweeteners, and more are toxic to pets and require immediate medical intervention if enough is ingested for their individual body weight. Fatty foods such as butter, meat drippings, gravies, and rich meats can cause severe gastrointestinal upset or pancreas inflammation. Some foods are obstructive, like meat bones, corncobs, or even turkey twine, and can get stuck, potentially needing surgical removal. Yeast dough can also expand at a dangerous rate in the stomach, and the alcohol from fermenting yeast can quickly absorb in your pet’s bloodstream and cause alcohol poisoning. Please keep these foods out of your pets’ reach during your celebrations, and if your pet does ingest anything concerning, please contact your nearest urgent care or emergency vet!

We've all encountered a pet, or perhaps owned one, who loves eating things they shouldn't. When pets indulge in unsuitable items, two major concerns arise: the potential toxicity of the ingested substance or the risk of internal injury. Toxic materials, like certain plants (e.g., lilies), foods (e.g., raisins), or poisons, can lead to organ failure. On the other hand, ingesting non-edibles such as rocks, sticks, or plastic may result in intestinal blockages or punctures. Both of these scenarios can be life-threatening. In such cases, prompt veterinary intervention is crucial. Contact your veterinarian immediately, providing details such as your pet's species, size, the ingested item, quantity, and, if possible, an ingredient list. This information is crucial for the veterinarian to assess the risk and determine the necessary steps. If you suspect your pet has consumed something harmful, don't hesitate to call our team at 760-757-1571. Our experienced veterinarians will guide you on the appropriate course of action.
