Changes and growth are afoot. I remember reading Craigs Cochins page one morning last year sometime when he wrote about keeping the hobby fun. It’s a HOBBY after all and nobody is making a living raising a couple breeds of chickens for exhibition in their backyard. If it’s not fun anymore, it’s time for a change.

This year I experimented with a range flock. American game, shamos, and our layers all free ranging and multiplying with no restraint. Here’s what I’ve learned, I’ll try and post a little everyday about my experience so it’s not ungodly wordy.

It’s absolutely wonderful to watch hens and chicks. It’s wonderful to NOT deal with a brooder. However, more chicks means more problems. We had coccidia this year because the ground was constantly wet, game hens can be brutal and kill/injure other hen’s chicks that get in their way, it’s hard to feed age appropriate feed to chicks when all ages of juveniles are running wild.

It was too much chaos for me to hatch this way. My goal of simplifying the process creates stress and demanded more of my time and attention than I was prepared to offer and other things suffered because of it.

Next year I will do planned hatches only and minimize the diversity of juvenile ages in my range flock.

Really enjoyed this hour of chicken chatting! Two people who have collectively taught me more about chicken keeping than the whole rest of the chicken community combined! Thank you for the opportunity Rip Stalvey and Jeff Mattocks

I posted about this on Poultry Keepers 360 so it’s only fair I share with my own circle! Switched to a trough style feeder and scheduled feedings. It’s working beautifully and the feed waste has been curtailed. Many birds can eat at the same time, no competition for spots. Younger birds hang back and wait their turn while older grow outs and yard bosses eat.

Great new addition to better utilize the fines in the top quality Kraut Creek Feed that keep our flock healthy!
