Are you the sticky one?
I was working on shoulder in with Shine. Going to the left it felt ok but going to the right she felt a bit sticky.
Then I thought maybe I’m a bit sticky! So I unhooked her and set up the camera so I could see what I looked like. Recording your sessions is a great way to see what’s going on in a session.
So often we are more than willing to say what the horse is doing wrong but we don’t often look at what we are presenting to the horse.
And yes when I’m with her, I talk with her nonstop😬
Anyone want to guess why my crazy horse was gonna give me a heart attack?!? The horse calling out was actually outside. I guess my phone has pretty good sound on it!
Answer is in the comments 😬
This is the end of a session with my mare, Shine. You can hear me in the video say, “I’m going to put you out”. Then I just completely drop her!
I’m not proud of this clip. You can see me pull on her cause she’s ahead of me and wave my hand to slow her down. She has no direction. She doesn’t know our “session” ended. As I was waving my hand at her, I thought stay with her til the end and then picked her back up.
Once I stopped the camera, I went back to her and walked her in unison to the pasture.
Sessions starts the moment our horses see us coming for them and end when we turn and walk away. Make it count.
Learning
Often I bring both Shine and Jo in together and tie them in the arena. I work with one while the other stands and eats. Jo goes right to the hay bag but I noticed Shine just stood there. I pulled hay out of the holes and shine started eating. She didn’t know how to eat from the hay bag. I pulled a few strands out and she started eating. She probably would have figured it out eventually, but why not help her out a little. We often make assumptions about our horses based on our experience. What assumptions do you make about your horse?
Jo is sassy. Straight to the senior feed!
Jo is sassy
I thought I’d let Jo graze outside after we were done with our session. She walked straight into the feed shed. The banging you can hear is her taking the kids off of the senior grain bins.
A little friend in the arena with us but he wasn’t so little.
I had to edit the original due to my language! Poor Jo was like what the heck is your problem. There was a huge snake in the arena!!!
I posted a second video in the comments cause it wouldn’t let me post two videos at once.
