Are Retractable Dog Leashes Bad?

They can beā€“just ask an emergency doctor or veterinarian how many retractable leash injuries they see every year.
By John Strassburger -Published:June 30, 20230
Hereā€™s the thing that the various makers of retractable leashes donā€™t want you to know: They can hurt you ā€“ and your dog ā€“ and the bigger the dog and retractable leash, the more likely the chance of injury.

Does that mean retractable dog leashes are bad and unsafe? We think so.

Common Retractable Leash Injuries
There are two main ways retractable dog leashes can hurt you. The first is the whiplash effect thatā€™s caused when your dog reaches the end of the 16-foot line (or 26-foot line) at full speed. The force of that sudden deceleration can crush your dogā€™s larynx, bruise or strain the muscles in his neck or chest, or badly hurt you ā€“ from whiplash to fractures, depending on whether you fall down or not.
And, if you manage to drop the retractable leash, that heavy handle you hold on to will whip its way back to the dog, potentially injuring the dog or scaring the dog ā€“ especially a puppy! ā€“ enough that the dog takes off running only to be ā€œchasedā€ by the leash.

The second kind of injury is caused when that long leash wraps around something, like a personā€™s legs, which may cause that person to fall. And if that person isnā€™t related to you ā€“ well, get ready for the lawsuit. Thatā€™s why they arenā€™t allowed at some veterinarianā€™s offices, stores, and at many dog events.

A Standard Leash Is Much Safer
Too often, dog owners either willfully or absent-mindedly donā€™t pay attention to what their dog is doing at the end of their 16-foot retractable leash, and so the dog gets in a fight with another dog or wraps his leash round a personā€™s leg or an immovable object and trips someone. Thatā€™s why some communities have banned them completely. Itā€™s why Mounds Pet Food Warehouse of Wisconsin banned them at its five stores.

Walking is great exercise for you and your dog. The purpose of retractable leashes is to give your dog more freedom to roam and explore, but doing it safely requires proper walking training and great care. Thatā€™s why most dog trainers and animal behaviorists recommend using a standard six-foot leash to walk your dog.

Statistics on Retractable-Leash Injries
From 2001 to 2018, the American Journal for Emergency Medicine tracked injuries requiring emergency room treatment related to retractable dog leashes, and they found those injuries increased by four times. Of those, 193,000 were from pulling and 136,000 were from becoming entangled. The most common injuries were fracture, strain or sprain, or contusion, usually from the leash breaking.

On his website, Dr. Garret Pachtinger of Philadelphia, a board-certified emergency/critical care veterinarian and the co-founder of VetGirl, a continuing education site for veterinarians, says the most common injuries he sees from retractable leashes are a neck strain or a displacement of a vertebra from the dog suddenly pulling hard and fast, or a variety of injuries when a person falls because the leash has wrapped around their leg(s).

Dogs can also suffer eye injuries if the leash breaks; they can suffer torn larynxes from pulling too hard; dogs have jumped to their deaths or run into traffic after pulling the leash from their handlerā€™s hand and then fled blindly in terror because they thought something was chasing them.

If you must have a longer leash for your dog for a particular outing or event, buy a long-line regular leash, not a retractable. ā€œIt takes some skill to manage long and light lines without turning them into a knotted mess, but itā€™s worth the effort,ā€ says Whole Dog Journal Training Editor Pat Miller. You need the right leash for what you are doing with your dog.

An update on the canine respiratory illness:

For anyone following the story, you may have heard that an unusual canine respiratory illness is now being seen across the country.
Here is an excerpt from a news report by the global center for health security:

Scientists at the University of New Hampshire may have identified a pathogen that has sickened possibly thousands of dogs and killed some of them across the country.

The mysterious respiratory illness that may have sickened scores of dogs across the country could be caused by a new type of bacterial infection that may be very good at evading the canine immune system, researchers say. Some dogs have died from the illness that starts with a cough that can last for weeks, runny eyes and sneezing.

In a development that might help shed light on the illness, which has affected a range of dog breeds, researchers at the University of New Hampshireā€™s Veterinary Diagnosis Laboratory and the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies told NBC News they have identified a pathogen that might be whatā€™s making pets sick.

Through a genetic sequencing of samples from an initial group of 30 dogs from New Hampshire who were infected last year and then an additional 40 from Rhode Island and Massachusetts who got sick this year, the researchers say they have discovered a previously unknown germ.

The pathogen is ā€œa funky bacterium,ā€ said Dr. David Needle, pathology section chief at the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire. ā€œItā€™s smaller than a normal bacterium in its size and in the size of its genome. Long story short, itā€™s a weird bacterium that can be tough to find and sequence.ā€

Milford Veterinary Hospital, together with the Veterinary Emergency of Manchester, initially contacted UNH and provided the first test samples when we started seeing unusual respiratory cases last year.
Thankfully we are not seeing many cases in our area anymore, but it still pays to use caution, especially when traveling with your dogs or considering dog parks, boarding, daycare, etc..

Our thanks to Dr. Needle and UNH for working hard to solve this mystery!

In a world where size often belied strength, there lives a little chihuahua mix named Tuffy. Although small in stature, Tuffy possesses a mighty spirit that rivals even the largest of canines. With a spicy attitude that matches his fiery determination, he is on a quest to find the perfect lap to snuggle onā€”a journey that will showcase the true depth of his curmudgeonly yet endearing nature.

From the moment Tuffy entered this world, it was evident that he was no ordinary pup. His bark is fierce, his gaze unyielding, and his demeanor undeniably crusty. But those who take the time to look beyond his prickly exterior discover a heart brimming with compassion and a personality that could light up a room.

Tuffy's adventures are filled with audacity and charm. Whether it is fearlessly taking on dogs twice his size or boldly asserting his presence in a room full of strangers, he leaves an indelible mark wherever he goes. His relentless determination earned him the reputation of a little pooch with a big heart and an even bigger personality.

But amidst his sassy antics and tough exterior, Tuffy has a secret longingā€”a desire for a warm lap to snuggle on, a place where he can unleash his softer side. Deep down, he craves the gentle embrace and affectionate touch that will bring out the tender warmth hidden beneath his feisty facade.

As Tuffy's journey unfolds he has encountered a diverse cast of characters, each offering their own version of love and companionship. Some are intimidated by his fiery spirit, while others are enchanted by his undeniable charisma. But Tuffy patiently waits, knowing that the lap he seeks will be one that sees beyond his outward bravado and appreciates the complex blend of spiciness and sweetness that reside within him.

This, probably more than anything else, is whatā€™s at the core of most human/dog issues.

We tend to view love as giving our dogs whatever they want/desire, and hope (or expect) that that will translate to our dogs feeling loved, safe, and happy. Sadly, these good intentions typically cause our dogs to become ill-behaved bullies, chaotic wrecks, and even neurotic basket cases.

Not a very loving outcome.

Dogs, like human children, donā€™t flourish from getting everything they request or desire, and from pushing rules and not receiving adequate pushback. They feel unsafe (because no one is in charge), they develop anti-social behavior (because no one has enforced pro-social behavior), and they end up suffering for our skewed take on ā€œloveā€ (choose your behavior issue and/or neurosis).

Truth is, some owners (parents) donā€™t know any better, and some do but it find it too much work, and others find the personal rewards of witnessing the momentary ā€œjoyā€ which comes from allowance/enabling too irresistible to resist.

If youā€™re experiencing issues with your dog, perhaps itā€™s time to more deeply examine how you view love.

PS, for all those who will feel the need to tell me they spoil their dogs and have no issues, please be aware that there are always exceptionsā€”dogs who you can get away with all manner of nonsense with, with little to no fallout, which Iā€™m well aware ofā€”and that the generalized assessment Iā€™m making isnā€™t about you and your exceptionā€¦itā€™s about the majority of non-exceptions who are struggling and suffering. Try to bear that in mind prior to feeling the need to let the world know how happy, healthy, and amazingly well-behaved your spoiled dog is.
