Weber County Animal Shelter is seeing an alarming increase in parvovirus cases among dogs in our community. Parvo is a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus that affects dogs, particularly puppies and unvaccinated dogs. As pet owners, it’s crucial to take immediate steps to protect our furry friends and prevent further spread of this dangerous disease.

What is Parvo?
Parvovirus is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause severe gastrointestinal issues, vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Puppies under six months, as well as unvaccinated dogs, are particularly at risk.
How Can You Prevent Parvo in Your Dog?
• Vaccinate your dog: Ensure your dog is up-to-date on their vaccinations, particularly the core vaccines that protect against parvovirus. Puppies should start their vaccine series at 6-8 weeks of age, with booster shots given at regular intervals.
• Avoid exposure to infected dogs: Keep your dog away from other dogs showing signs of illness, particularly in public places like dog parks, pet stores, or places where dogs frequently gather.
• Sanitize your dog's environment: Parvo can live in the environment for months. Clean your dog's bedding, toys, and other belongings regularly. If your dog has been sick, disinfect the areas where they’ve been with a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 30 parts water).
• Limit exposure to unknown dogs: Avoid introducing your puppy or unvaccinated dog to new dogs, especially if they may have been exposed to parvo.
What to Do If You Suspect Your Dog Has Parvo
If your dog is showing signs of parvovirus, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, seek veterinary care immediately. Early treatment can significantly improve their chances of survival.

How to Help Prevent the Spread of Parvo in the Community
• Report suspected cases: If you suspect your dog has parvo or you've encountered a dog displaying symptoms, report it to your local animal shelter to help them monitor the situation and prevent further spread.
• Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly after handling dogs, especially those who may have been exposed to parvo. This simple step can help prevent the virus from spreading to other dogs.

Together, We Can Protect Our Community’s Dogs
Let’s work together to keep Weber County’s dogs safe. Vaccinating your pets and following basic prevention tips can help stop the spread of parvo and keep your beloved pets healthy.
For more information on vaccine clinics and local vets offices please give us a call 801-399-8244 or come into the shelter!

Meet Tobias!
Tobais is a 6 year old intact male Belgian Malinois mix! Tobias is pretty scared here at the shelter and could really use a foster home if you are not able to adopt. He can be a little shy when meeting new people at first, so a slow approach works best. Tobias doesn't seem to mind the other dogs here at the shelter. He has lived with cats before and he was scared of them. Tobias is crate trained, house trained and knows his basic commands. His ideal home is one with low traffic and not a lot of strangers coming over. He needs someone who can advocate for his need of slow introductions and space. We recommend a home with older dog savvy children. Once he warms up he loves to play in the yard! If you are interested in fostering please email [email protected]. If you are interested in adoption or have more questions, please come into the shelter during business hours!

Public Service Announcement: Parvo Awareness
Parvo Doesn't Take a Break – Neither Should You

Parvo is a deadly virus that can affect dogs of all ages, but it doesn't follow a "season" or break in between outbreaks. It's an ongoing issue and can spread year-round. That's why it's critical to stay vigilant and proactive to protect your pets.
What is Parvo?
Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) attacks a dog's gastrointestinal system, leading to severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and even death if left untreated. The virus is highly contagious and can be spread by direct contact with infected dogs or contaminated objects, like toys, bowls, or shoes.

Prevention: What You Can Do
• Vaccinate Your Dog: Make sure your dog is up-to-date on their Parvo vaccinations. Puppies need a series of vaccinations to ensure full protection. Consult with your veterinarian for the best vaccination schedule.
• Avoid Contact with Infected Dogs: If you’re aware of an outbreak in your area, keep your dog away from public spaces like dog parks or walking areas where infected dogs may have been.
• Keep Your Yard Clean: Parvo can live in the environment for months, especially in soil and on surfaces. Disinfect outdoor areas and wash any items your dog uses, including toys and bedding.

What To Do If Your Dog Gets Parvo
If your dog shows symptoms of Parvo, seek veterinary care immediately! Time is of the essence to provide supportive care, such as fluids, antibiotics, and medications to control symptoms.
• Isolation: Keep your infected dog isolated to prevent spreading the virus to other pets.
• Cleaning: Thoroughly clean and disinfect any areas where your dog has been. Parvo is tough to kill, so use a strong disinfectant, like one containing bleach (diluted at a 1:30 ratio with water), and scrub all surfaces.
• Yard and Home: For yards, you may need to treat with bleach or a similar disinfectant to help destroy the virus. Be sure to clean all areas where your dog spent time, including floors, bedding, and carpets. Be mindful to dispose of any contaminated materials properly.

Remember: Prevention is key, and keeping your dog safe from Parvo is an ongoing responsibility—not just a seasonal task. Stay informed, stay prepared, and help stop the spread of Parvo!

Meet Beau!
Beau is a 1 year old intact male mix breed dog! (our best guess is great Pyrenees, rottweiler, collie and maybe a few other things). Beau is a happy go lucky dog who seems to love everyone he meets. He seems excited to meet and play with other dogs but would most likely chase a cat. Beau is an active dog who needs an active family who can meet his needs! He knows sit but needs some help learning the rest of his basic commands. His favorite thing in the world is treats!
