2025 Agility Class Tentative Schedule & Registration
Session General Information:
Three agility training sessions are planned to begin in April 2025 and running through September 2025.

Classes are designed for fun for both dog and handler. Training is outdoors and will meet unless extreme weather causes a cancellation.

Training sessions are planned for a six-week duration. Training is conducted outdoors so adjustments may be required due to weather conflicts. Training location is 586 190th Street in Ogden, Iowa.

Foundation class: designed for any dogs six months of age or older and starting new in agility. The class will emphasize introduction to groundwork with jumps (without bars and low bars), tunnels, weave poles, and handler teamwork. Introduction to contact obstacles on the ground will provide dogs a familiarization to the obstacles in a safe manner. Emphasis is placed upon creating a confident introduction to agility equipment along with creating teamwork between canine and handler. Designed for on-lead handling as needed.

Beginner’s class: will be for dogs six months of age or older and have had at least a Foundation class or previous Beginner class introduction. Skills will focus upon building short sequences with the various equipment as well as moving from training height on contact obstacles to full height contact obstacles during the session. Continued emphasis on teamwork.

Advanced Beginner’s class: will be for dogs having completed one Beginner’s session, but not necessarily ready to work off-lead in a controlled fashion. Also for dogs preparing for Novice trial competition but not yet competing. Training will focus upon longer sequence handling and increasing handler skills for advancing sequence complexity.

Novice class: will be for dogs having been through at least one agility class, able to work off-lead in a controlled fashion, and are either ready to be competing or are competing at the Novice class level. Sequences and handling skills will focus on Novice and some Open trial levels to advance both canine and handler skills. Will also individualize training as able.

Advanced Competition class: will be for dogs either actively competing at the Open/Excellent level or those preparing for a transition to higher competition level training. Class components will focus on Master/Excellent and Premier level type sequences and work on drills to build handling skills for the more complex sequences. Will also individualize training as able.

At the April 2024 AKC Board Meeting, recently proposed changes to the agility regulations were approved and adopted. The changes involve multiple aspects including allowing FEO in all classes, adjusting course yardage in 8/12″ Excellent/Master levels, adjusting course yardage in Excellent/Master JWW, removing the pause table from the Excellent/Master Standard class, and a few other additional changes. The Board minutes with the specifics can be found starting at page 15 of the Board minutes. A direct link to the minutes is:

Knowing that some following this page also participate in Obedience and Rally competitions, I wanted to pass along information of a recent change to the Obedience and Rally Regulations that took place at the January 2024 AKC Board meeting. This is in regards to replacing the current high jump with a high jump that is comprised of displaceable panels.
I did send a communication to the AKC Obedience Department regarding specific aspects of the proposed change, and I have included a summary of that communication in the reply section of this posting.
There has been a lot of support within the obedience fancy of making the boards on the high jump displaceable for safety reasons. However, there is the realization this will require new equipment purchases by many clubs and some of the needed panel sizes that correspond to current high jump board sizes are not available.
The AKC is providing a long timeframe for clubs to meet this new requirement.
You can also always find recent updates to the Obedience or Rally program using the blog, which is located at: https://akcobedrlyjudges.wordpress.com/

News from the January 2024 AKC Board meeting is beginning to be distributed regarding proposed changes to the AKC Agility Regulations. Keep in mind these are only proposals and will be further discussed at the April 2024 Board meeting. I have included a screenshot of the proposed changes that will be further discussed at future meetings.
There have been questions about some of the proposed changes and I will try to give more detail or personal insight that might explain better. I do not have any knowledge of what may have been discussed at the department level.
1. Reduce wheeling of Open courses to one time. Currently, the Excellent/Master and Open Standard and JWW courses require the judge to wheel the course twice. Once for the large dog path and once for the small dog path. The two wheeled measurements provide the average distance for the 16" dog path. Course time calculations are then made from those respective measurements. This modification would align with the recent change of only requiring the Novice courses to be wheeled once. An average for all jump heights are then calculated from that one measurement.
2. Increase course yardage to 8 and 12 inch heights for Excellent and Master. While not stated, this likely applies to the Standard classes for this specific change, since there is an additional proposed change to increase yardage in Excellent/Master JWW for all heights. This has been an issue that arises with some venue configurations and attempting to provide good spacing on a course but also keep within the current maximum course distances. This will assist with alleviating those issues that are encountered. I do not have further insight as to why they are not considering increasing maximum course yardage for all heights in the Standard classes.
3. No longer require a "Bar" jump in any courses. Course design currently requires at least one bar jump to include two bars. This would remove that requirement and allow bar jumps to all be single bar jumps, along with the respective accompanying spread jump, panel jump, and tire jump requirements. This does not relate to requirements for a certain percentage of winged jumps nor such related criteria.
4. Allow the use of a Wall Jump in the Excellent and Master classes. Currently the Wall Jump is only allowed in the Premier classes. This does not mean a club will be required to purchase a wall jump. It is only available if a club has a wall jump in their equipment inventory and the judge wants to utilize the wall jump in their course design. Judges are still expected to abide by a club's available equipment listing when designing courses. This only provides for the option of using the Wall Jump in Exc/Mstr courses, does not make it a requirement.
4. Only allow one time use of the tire obstacle in a course. There are times, due to venue configuration, that the tire jump has been taken twice on a course. This most often happened when attempting to place the tire within a course, other than at the beginning or end of a course. This will remove that option of being able to utilize the tire jump twice on a course.
