MercyPets

MercyPets MercyPets is a charitable organization which invites pet lovers to join hands in alleviating child h My excitement knew no bounds. I only had one concern.

How it all Began...
On December 26, 2010 I received a most amazing Christmas gift - a puppy. I broke out into baby talk with her like any father would do with his baby. And that's how Tutu got her name. It did not take me too long to realize how much I loved Tutu. Over the next weeks and months, Tutu got the best of everything. Would my focus on Tutu reduce my commitment to my other pet cause - ch

ild hunger. Very early during Tutu's life with me, I made a commitment. I decided that I would donate penny-for-penny to charities that work hard to alleviate child hunger. I believe that Tutu has made a difference in the world. Tutu is a MercyPet. I am convinced that most people who love pets also care deeply about human concerns. Data suggests that Americans spend $61 billion annually on pets. Yet, just in the Dayton area, 17 precent of the residents including 39,390 children do not have enough to eat. Globally, some 795 million people do not have enough food to lead a healthy, active life. That is about 1/9 people on earth. In addition, 12.9 percent of the world's population is undernourished. Many of them are children. In fact, children are the most vulnerable. Annually, hunger related issues cause the death of 3.1 million children. The data is staggering. Here is where MercyPets comes in. If every pet-lover gave penny-for -penny of what they spend on pets to the cause of child hunger, we could eliminate it completely. But most people are unable to give a hundred percent. Yet, if every person decided to donate 1% of what they spend on pets it would add up to $61 million. That could make all the difference in the world. I shared my vision to connect pet lovers and child hunger with other pet parents and like-minded people. Before I knew it, MercyPets was born. The rest is history. Today, MercyPets has a Committee of dedicated volunteers, most of who are pet owners. But more importantly, each one of them cares deeply about child hunger. Based in Dayton, OH, MercyPets inspires pet lovers to help alleviate child hunger. I assure you that a 100% of your donations to MercyPets will go toward alleviating child hunger in the Dayton area, and as we grow, nationally and eventually internationally.

December 2025 marks the 8th Anniversary of MercyPets - the charitable fund that invites pet-parents to alleviate child hunger. The MercyPets Committee and I are incredibly humbled by the donor support and the many children's lives that have been nourished - not just with food, but also with hope. Beginning with babies in Dayton, children in the US, Haiti, Columbia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Rwanda, MercyPets is literally saving lives and giving nourishment and hope. Whether you are a pet-parent or not, I humbly invite you to join the cause at mercypets.org.

n 2025, MercyPets ventured into Rwanda. Here are some pictures and the latest report we got from our partner - Gasura Kindergarten in Kinigi - Musanze.

"We are deeply grateful for your generous donation to Gasura Kindergarten. Your support has brought real change to our school and community.

How Your Support Made a Difference
Thanks to the generous donation received five months ago, Gasura Kindergarten has transformed its daily feeding program. The funds enabled the school to shift from non-nutritious foods to balanced, healthy meals, providing daily breakfasts and lunches rich in vegetables, fruits, and proteins. We also established an akarima k’igikoni (vegetable garden) at the school, ensuring a sustainable source of fresh produce and engaging children in gardening activities.

Children like Pendo (age 5), Ndayishimiye (age 5), Uwase (age 4), and Kevin (age 6) now enjoy healthier meals every day. Uwase, who once came to school hungry, is now among the first to line up for porridge and helps water the vegetables. Kevin, who struggled to concentrate, now has the energy to play and learn. Pendo’s bright smile at lunchtime and Kevin’s joy in the garden are daily reminders of the real difference your support has made.

Your donation has also brought new energy and pride to our kitchen team. Chef Mutesi and her staff now find their work easier and more fulfilling, thanks to better supplies and a wider variety of fresh ingredients. They take great joy in preparing healthy meals and seeing the children happy and well-fed each day.

As a result, students are healthier, more energetic, and attendance has improved. This support has made a lasting difference for both the children and the wider community.

It's National Dessert Day! Here are some safe treats you can make for your furry friends:

Blueberry Yogurt Drops for Dogs:
Mix one cup of plain unsweetened yogurt and half a cup of blueberries to make blueberry and yogurt drops. Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto a baking sheet and freeze for a few hours. These drops make a tasty and healthy treat for your dog.

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and are a great source of vitamins and minerals for your dogs.

Tuna Treats for Cats:
Ingredients:
1 can tuna in oil, drained
1 egg
1 1/4 cups of flour, plus extra for dusting
1/2 cup water
dash of parsley
bottle cap for cutting out treats
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350. 2. In a food processor mix tuna, egg, flour, water and parsley until a dough forms. If the dough looks too sticky, add a bit more flour.
3. Dust a surface with flour and roll out dough to 1/2 inch thick. 4. Use a bottle cap to cut out treats from the dough. 5. Bake for 20 minutes on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. 6. Let cool and serve to your cat.

Please consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns about allergies or stomach upset, prior to sharing these treats with your furry friends!
