T H I S!!! PLEASE SHARE!!!

⚠️🚙⚠️ Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the U.S. die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message. ⚠️🚙⚠️

SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.

Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.

• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.

• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.

• Temperatures exceeding 104˚ F can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.

• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 160˚F and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 150˚F.

• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 104˚C.

• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.

Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.

If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

PSA. For many who don't realize...

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Greetings from Shake A Leg Mobile Grooming,

There is an emerging canine respiratory disease that appears to likely be a new species as it has not been isolated nor positive on any tests.

The symptoms include typical signs of kennel cough (coughing, lethargic behavior), however, it is sometimes more severe with significant pneumonia (If it is a new organism, most dogs' immune systems will be naive and have no resistance).

Please consider having your dogs avoid sharing public water bowls, areas where many dogs congregate (dog parks, social gatherings) and before boarding.

We are not making any change in our vaccination requirements, but have doubled our cleaning efforts and ask that you keep your pup(s) at home if showing any symptoms.

Below is an article that explain more about the illness.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture has received more than 200 case reports from veterinarians of a mysterious canine infectious respiratory disease since the middle of August.

Hygiene Tips for Dog Owners

A major part of being a pet parent means taking care of your dog’s hygiene. From bathing, brushing, haircuts, and ear checks, there is a lot that can go into making sure your pet is clean and healthy.

It can be a lot to manage, so here are a few tips to make keeping Fido clean a little easier.
Nails
Do’s:

Trim your dog’s nails regularly. If you neglect to trim your pet’s nails, it can cause injury and issues for them.
Go slowly and carefully when you first begin, especially if your dog is not used to having their paws handled.
Use the proper tools made specifically for dogs’ nails.

Don’ts:

Don’t use human nail clippers or trimmers.
If you don’t feel confident in your ability to trim your pet’s nails, have a vet or groomer do it or show you the proper methods.

Paws
Do’s:

Check your pet’s paws regularly to ensure there are no thorns, rocks, or other debris embedded in their paw pads that can cause discomfort.
Check between the paw pads and toes to ensure there is nothing stuck in there.

Ears
Do’s:

Clean your dog’s ears out weekly with a moist cloth or cotton ball. You can just use water or there are special ear-cleaning solutions made specifically for dogs’ ears.
Wipe out the inside of the ear to remove excess wax or anything else that could be hiding in there.
If you notice any redness or inflammation, call your vet as they may have an infection.

Don’ts:

Do not use Q-tips as these can push debris further into the ear canal.
Don’t clean your dog’s ears more than once a week as overcleaning can cause irritation.
If there are foreign objects in their ear, do not try to remove them yourself and instead contact your vet.

Mouth
Do’s:

Use a cloth to rub over your dog’s teeth and gums before your brush their teeth to help desensitize your pet to the feeling of having their teeth handled.
Use a toothbrush that is appropriate for the size of your dog’s mouth.
Use toothpaste that is formulated specifically for dogs.
Give your dog nylon chew toys that will help keep their teeth clean between brushes.

Don’ts:

Do not use human toothpaste as it may include ingredients that are toxic to dogs.
Do not use baking soda to brush their teeth as it can upset your dog’s stomach.

Bathing and Brushing
Do’s:

Brush your dog regularly to avoid knots or mats.
Use a brush suited to your dog’s type of fur. Bristle brushes are better for short hair dogs while pin brushes work better for long-haired dogs.
Brush your pet before bathtime. Washing your pet while they have tangles in their fur can make them even worse.
Use shampoo specific for dogs.

Don’ts:

Don’t over-brush your dog. It is recommended to brush them every other day or just a few times a week.
If your dog is matted, do not try to cut it out with scissors. Your dog could get scared and accidentally get cut. Instead, use a comb to try and gently unravel the mat, and if you can’t get it out, take your dog to a professional groomer.
Don’t bathe your dog outdoors in cold temperatures.

Taking care of your dog’s hygiene can be a big undertaking. However, if you follow these tips, you should have a clean, happy dog!

Ugh!!! This little one… I’m seeing WAY TO MANY matted dogs these last few months!! Many breeds of dogs that have fluffy coats, mixed coats, or curly coats can be prone to mats. A mat is essentially a group of tangles in your dogs coat that was left unbrushed for too long that tightened into a thick patch we call a mat. Mats can also worsen with wet or snowy weather, if you dog goes somewhere where they get very dirty, play hard, or simply are not groomed often enough.

The skin underneath the mats is often raw or inflamed, at the very least irritated. Matted parts of your dog’s coat will not dry properly and, if left untreated, could lead to rotting fur and skin. Sometimes mats even occur in places where urine or f***s can get stuck or embedded in the fur putting your dog at risk for further infection. In extreme cases, mats in certain areas like joints or legs can reduce the mobility of your dog’s limbs.

In severe cases, matting may impede regular air circulation to skin, cut off air supply to extremities, damage, bruise and discolour skin, open up sores and rips, become a breeding ground for fleas and parasites and be very smelly because the undercoat retains dampness and can cause skin rot. Simply put, MATTING IS PAINFUL FOR YOUR DOG!!! Skin irritations, rashes and Hematomas can occur after shaving, especially on the ear leather.

Pseudocoprostasis typically occurs to breeds that have long hair. Once the matted hair grows over the a**s, it makes it difficult for the dog to defecate. The f***s against the skin can make the area become irritated and infected. The f***s can also attract flies that will the lay their larvae (maggots) on the dog, causing more irritation to the dog’s skin. The maggots can actually burrow into the dog’s skin. Maggots can also cause skin to die (necrosis). The maggots will feed on the dog’s skin and cause severe secondary infections.

Pseudocoprostasis is a very painful condition to the dog. It is also an unsanitary condition for the pet and his family. F***s may get on your floors and furniture. There are parasites, fungus and bacteria that may be transmitted to humans by the dog’s f***s.

Pseudocoprostasis is the condition where excrement and hair become matted around the a**s area. Eventually the re**um becomes obstructed by the entangled mass of hair and f***s.

It is unfeasible to de-mat/brush out the coat which 99.9% of the time it is, as this would cause excessive pain and stress to your pet.

Think about it like this, would you go to the hairdressers without combing or brushing your hair for six weeks, 6 months or even a year and expect the service to be comfortable and pain-free? You probably would not enjoy it, which is why your dog will not enjoy the dematting process, even if it were possible.

I’ve been seeing more dogs with fleas this year than in previous years. Please check the condition of your dog’s coat frequently. Flea infestations pose serious risks to pets. These pesky fleas can cause several health problems. One problem known as flea allergy dermatitis can trigger an immune response; other health concerns are tapeworms, anemia, and bartonellosis. There’s plenty of homeo, pathic and prescription, flea remedies available. My go to for my own dog is Nexguard. In the in term, Richard’s organic flea and tick shampoo is fantastic. You can find it on Amazon. If your pup is prone to fleas, In between your regularly scheduled grooming appointments, you can home bathe your pup with Richard’s flea products.
