Happy World Animal Day!

We’re fortunate that we get to share our world with such a variety of animals. They contribute so much to the ecological balance and bring joy to our lives in their own special ways. It's really important that we treat all animals with compassion and kindness.

One way we can show our love for animals is by adopting, spaying and neutering, and making sure our pets are up to date on vaccinations. This helps keep them happy and healthy. If we all work together to help and speak up for animals, we can make the world a better place for them!

As of the end of surgery yesterday Okanogan Regional Humane has altered 9000 animals!!! Steadily chipping away! A big thank you to Dr. Honeyfield, the local vet clinics we work with, our supporters, and our volunteers, we could not do what we do with out each and every single one of you.

Yesterday was feral cat day, one day dedicated to the spay and neutering of feral cats. We were able to do 16 surgeries 💕💕 Thanks to a great team. We will be doing feral cats every Wednesday on the weeks we have surgeries scheduled.

Dr. Amanda Honeyfield is joining our team at Okanogan Regional Humane! 🐾🩺

Dr. Honeyfield recently moved to Okanogan from western Montana, where she filled in as a relief veterinarian at small animal practices and hospitals. She graduated from Kansas State University with her doctorate in veterinary medicine in 2018 and completed her Master's in Public Health in 2019. In her spare time, Dr. Honeyfield enjoys spending time with the animals on her farm, including the dogs, goats, and chickens, and going on adventures with her spouse.

Dr. Honeyfield is very excited to make a difference in our community! 💕

Their creativity, kindness, and hard work will help provide love and care to our furry friends in need. Thank you, little heroes, for making a big difference! 🐶❤️

Yesterday was the 6th vaccination clinic we have held this year! We are so happy to be able to provide this service to our low income pet parents in our area. We were able to get the first vaccine in these cute little pups, who are getting ready to go into foster care with OkanDogs. There is 11 of these cute little faces who will be looking for their forever homes before too long. Our next vaccine clinic will be July 10th, call and book your appointment now. Also a big thank you to Dr. Honeyfield and our volunteers who make these possible.

We just received a $3,000 grant award from The Washington Federation of Animal Care & Control Agencies! With this grant, we'll be able to spay/neuter 50 animals through our programs.

We are thankful to partner with The Federation. They fund grants through the sale of Washington State Spay-Neuter-Adopt license plates. Since 2007, they have funded almost 20,500 spay/neuter surgeries.

Another successful vaccine clinic!

Last Saturday, we vaccinated 51 animals! A new record, and still many others who are in need of vaccines. Our next clinic date will be March 2nd.

Shell or Princess Shell, as we have come to know her, arrived at ORH in the spring of 2014. We weren’t sure how old she was, but our best guess was 7-8 months old at the time. She was rescued with her brother from a small trailer park across from Shell Rock Point. The trailer park residents called them the “river cats” because they spent much of their time hiding by the river. Unfortunately, her brother was very sick and did not survive. Shell was frightened, very shy, and did not want to be touched. It took her a long time to warm up to our volunteers at ORH. Because she could not be returned to where she was trapped, Shell became one of the cats in our sanctuary here at ORH. Fast forward 10 years, and she now has a home to call her own!! 💕

Our residents, or the “kids” as we call them, come from a community cat setting and are not the most approachable cats. Every once in a while, we get that special family looking to add a new addition to their house, and they understand the process of taking on a cat who was not adequately socialized as a young kitten. The process takes patience, understanding, and significant time, but the results are well worth the effort.

We are so happy that Shell now has a family to call her own!!

Our vaccine clinic on January 6th was a success! We vaccinated 28 animals and chipped 98% of our patients. And about 70% of these cats and dogs will be back on February 3rd for boosters. 🐾

So far, we have 49 on the schedule for our next clinic on February 3rd, and if we have any leftover vaccines, we'll be trying to organize monthly vaccine clinics throughout the spring. Thank you to everyone who brought their pets in and to all who provided support! And a special thank you to Petco Love for providing the DAPPv and HCP vaccines! 💕

Contact your veterinarian. Request a copy of your pet's medical records. Report your concerns to the pet food company and ask your vet to do the same.

*Update as of 1/4/24 - 213 dogs and cats (155 dogs, and 58 cats) sick eating Purina, 57 of which have died.

Since 12/5/23 in the 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' group on Facebook there have been 48 dogs and 3 cats sick eating Purina, 10 of which have died. It seems to be from all different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan being the most common. If you or someone you know is feeding this food, I would stop immediately! Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall.

Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Currently, they are offering pet parents $10 in coupons (which is what Hills offered me for my dead dog) and having a third party contact the pet parents.

Eventually, we may see Purina pet food become “unavailable” on the store shelves. This is called a silent recall. The pet food manufacturer doesn’t want to admit there is a problem with the product, so they start pulling the products off the shelves quietly. (Hills did this for 60 days before the recall)."
