Pictures do not even come close to the true beauty, peace, and fun time 27 members and guests from Oldfield Club had at Shoshone Lodge. Sitting on the boundary of Yellowstone, we ate like kings, rode through unbelievably wild and untouched mountains, rivers and forests, trips to the beautiful Yellowstone National Park, rafting down crystal clear mountain water, campfires, dancing and the Cody Nite Rodeo left an everlasting experience for everyone. The cabins nestled in the mountain were the perfect way to sit on the front porch and watch the sunset settle in the pines. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect retreat! We are already booking for August of 2025!!! Please PM for more details!

A “Serious” Rider can be so without competing. There are plenty of highly skilled riders who take lessons, study, hone their craft, but do not feel the need to have to prove it by competing.

In horse sports there is plenty of pressure applied to persuade people to compete.

All the big organizations are competition based, and they derive their incomes and their power from regulating competition. So THEY push.

All the horse magazines push, because they have a vested interest in stirring up interest in who did what, who beat whom.

The equipment and apparel companies push riders and drivers to have the latest and most “in” styles.

Some parents push kids, to acquire reflected glory.

Many riders and drivers self-push to have their own sense of glory.

What happens, so often, as a result of this consistent pressure, is that a Kool-Aid mentality is created that winning is what counts and that the higher the level of the win, the more glory is attached, and that the most worthy riders and drivers, under that presumption, are “better” than all the “lesser” non-winners.

Now here’s the deal---You may or may not be persuaded to imbibe that Kool-Aid those others are trying to get you to drink. You can also say “$ #@&* you” and go do your own thing, and you can do that at any level that you choose, including being highly competent without needing to compete to somehow prove it to others.

And, in reality, those others are so busy trying to prove THEIR worth to other others that they don’t notice or care what you are doing---It is pretty weird!! When you really look at it.

We owe a responsibility to these animals that put their well-being first and foremost. Thank you mouse for everything you taught your riders. Thank you Shadowfax Farm II, LLC for taking such amazing care of these animals who can live as a horse should!!

Not just any horse wants to live with a special group of donkeys, but those that decide it’s ok reap the rewards in great pasture and loads of entertainment.
Welcome to Beamer and Mouse, and thank you to my boy Scooter for showing them the long ears are special friends too!

So this was just a normal kid jumping in California, in 1972. By "normal," I am talking about the way hunt seat equitation was "normally" taught back in those days, heavily influenced, I supect, by Bert DeNemethy's USET riders.

Her entire position demonstrates security, balance, lightness and harmony. Her heels are down, her eyes and chin are up, her lower leg is beneath her, her hip and knee angles are closed, and her hands and arms are allowing.

Clean, clear, precise and simple.

Unless you can't do it. Unless you hurl your upper body, throw your hands up the neck, look down, plant your face in the mane, let your legs swing back toward the horse's hips, and barf your way from fence to fence.

When did it go from this to what is now such a common "look" for so many American jumping riders?

And what will it take to regain this style, so that it is normal, rather than exceptional?
