We know Halloween is all about tricks and treats, but there's nothing fun about the real critters that can haunt your pet year-round: heartworms, fleas, and ticks!

🦟Heartworm Horror:
Heartworms are no Halloween myth! These parasites, spread by mosquitoes, can live in your pet's heart and lungs, causing serious health problems. Protect your furry friend from these silent invaders with monthly heartworm prevention.

🕸Nature's Vampires
Fleas and Ticks aren't just creepy- they're dangerous! These tiny bloodsuckers can carry diseases like Lyme and cause skin infections. Even during cooler months they can latch onto your pet, turning a fun fall walk into a risky adventure. Keep your pet protected with year-round flea and tick prevention.

➕Stop in to Red Cedar Animal Hospital today to refill your pet's monthly Heartworm and Flea/Tick prevention! We're now carrying the new Nexgard Plus, keeping your pet safe from the sanguineous pests as well as hookworms and roundworms!

We are so happy to welcome Dr. Diondra to our practice!

Dr. Diondra graduated from Michigan State University Veterinary School in 2024 after achieving a bachelor’s degree in animal science from MSU in 2015. She is the newest member to the team and is excited to meet and apply the latest patient-centered care to the families of Red Cedar Animal Hospital! As an owner that has raised her pets from puppy and kittenhood into super seniors, she has found an interest in utilizing nutrition and activities to keep pets enthusiastic and energetic, helping them live fulfilling lives with their families for as long as possible. She also enjoys working with owners to tailor specific health plans for their pets to ensure they stay in good health. She has always had the strong belief that each patient’s trip to the clinic should be a fear-free experience, with plenty of treats and pets involved, so that each animal enjoys their appointment, and everyone looks forward to their return visit!
Originally from Florida, Dr. Diondra was driven to help both wild and domestic animals with her family from a young age and has rescued, rehomed, and rehabilitated many animals for the past 30 years. She worked in the Veterinary field as a Surgical Technician for 4 years prior to attending Veterinary School. Dr. Diondra currently is the proud owner of one dog, a Pyrenees Mix who has been trained in advanced obedience named “Dawnia”. She also has two senior cats; one is a bobtail she rescued named “Romano” and a tortoiseshell queen cat (“Demarah”) who runs the whole household. She enjoys most outdoor activities, most notably camping, hiking, boating and she has a strong love for gardening and nature. Now that she has decided to make Michigan her new home, she plans to fully enjoy the 4 seasons Michigan has to offer!

We've been hearing a lot of worried pet owners asking about the uptick in reports of canine respiratory illness. While MSU has not seen any confirmed cases of the illness in Michigan, our advice to worried pet owners is Vaccinate, Isolate, Educate.

Vaccinate: Many veterinarians are recommending that concerned pet owners be sure that their dogs are up to date on routine vaccines, specifically Canine Influenza, Bordetella, and Parainfluenza vaccines. Vaccines can reduce the risk of contracting an illness, and reduce the severity of symptoms should infection occur.

Isolate: If you notice symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fever, etc. in your dog; keep them away from other dogs. Stay away from dog parks, boarding facilities, and other places where they might come into contact with other dogs. If your dog does not have symptoms, but you are concerned about them contracting an illness, the same advice can apply. Keep them at home, and don't share food or water dishes with multiple unknown dogs.

Educate: Consult your veterinarian. Early detection and intervention are the key to managing canine respiratory illness.

Above all else, do not panic. These are meant to be steps you can take to put your mind at ease, and keep your pets happy and healthy.

For more information on this, check out this report from MSU

There are a multitude of pathogens that cause respiratory disease in dogs. Veterinarians and diagnostic laboratories are working with state and federal agencies to identify a cause in recent cases.
