It's the most beautiful time of the year....intestinal blockages galore!

We understand it's a crazy time of the year for everyone, so do yourself a favor and make sure you can mark your pet safe 📍 from a GI emergency this year.

A few extra precautions can save yourself thousands of dollars in emergency fees and give your vet staff some PEACE 🤣. We'd rather see Fido for a healthy pet visit than a sick visit.

Today we recognize this wonderfully chaotic world of veterinary medicine. Thank you to zoo professionals for contributing towards conservation efforts, thank you to wildlife experts for caring and rehabilitating animals injured or displaced during natural disasters, and of course thank you to all the veterinarians for everything they do.

And thank you to everyone for everything in between!

🚨 Important Update: Leptospirosis Now a Core Vaccine for ALL Dogs

The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines have been updated to classify the leptospirosis vaccine as CORE for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age – regardless of lifestyle, location, or breed.

Why the change?
🌆 ALL dogs are at risk—urban, suburban, and rural.
⚠️ Potentially fatal, even with treatment.
🔄 Zoonotic—it can spread from pets to humans.
🏢 Dogs in daycare and kennels also face exposure risks.

Check out the full 2022 Canine Vaccination Guidelines here and in the graphic below: aaha.org/canine-vaccinations

It's the first of December, so you know we had to make it good!

The answer is.....

Leptospirosis!

Leptospirosis is a (spiral shaped) bacteria that lives in standing water and warm, wet soil, predominantly transmitted to dogs and humans through infected urine.

Your dog contracting Leptospirosis is as simple as them walking through a water puddle or walking through moist, infected soil, then licking their paws.

Preventative treatment is always less expensive than treatment for the disease. Leptospirosis is an infectious zoonotic disease, which means that it can infect animals and humans alike. It causes serious illness in dogs, other animals, and people throughout the US, and is transmitted easily between them. Leptospirosis causes a variety of flu-like symptoms, but more than 80% of dogs diagnosed develop serious, short-term kidney problems. Dogs that recover may still be at risk for chronic kidney failure or become carriers of the disease, spreading the bacteria during urination.

Clinical signs of Leptospirosis infection include fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, and jaundice. By the time your dog starts showing these signs, it is very difficult and expensive to treat.

The best treatment is PREVENTION. Consequently, the AAHA guidelines have recently designated the Leptospirosis vaccine as a core vaccine.

Vaccination is the best option for protecting YOU and your DOG from the dangers of Leptospirosis.

Congrats to these smarties!
Lisa Rudy Hoke, Heather Tidwell with honorable mentions to Jody Panaro and Chase Jackson!
