👷🔨🦺🚧🔜 🦃🎄🎆

Don’t be ✨that✨ person this holiday season. If you anticipate needing boarding over the next couple of months, make sure to stay up to date on your pet’s vaccines AND preventions.

We are actively taking boarding reservations through New Years, so get on the calendar sooner rather than later to avoid the stress and headaches as the holidays approach. You’ll thank yourself later 🤝

YAy, it's finally C̶̶h̶̶r̶̶i̶̶s̶̶t̶̶m̶̶a̶̶s̶̶ !

Who got this week’s answer correct?! The answer is……
EAR MITES!

Ear Mites are usually found in the ear canal but can also live on the skin surface. They are highly contagious, and animals become infested by direct contact with another infested animal. The mite is barely visible to the naked eye and may be seen as a white speck moving against a dark background.

Second to fleas, ear mites are the most common external parasite. Clinical signs vary in severity from one pet to another, but usually include combinations of:
- Ear irritation, head shaking, and ear scratching
-Dark waxy/crusty discharge
-Hair loss from excess scratching/grooming
-Crusted rash around the ear
-Aural hematoma (from excess scratching)

Diagnosis is confirmed via otoscope or microscope examination.

In terms of treatment, no medication can pe*****te the eggs or pupae, so medication is used to target adults. Although rare, ear mites CAN affect people- so make sure to take steps towards eradication in pets if they are affected!

Congrats to:
Ellen Blacklee, Heather Tidwell, Jody Panaro, and Stacey Turner!

🚩📣Attention, folks‼️📣🚩

It's literally ✨spooky season✨ and we need everyone to be aware‼️

In the United States, more than 90% of reported cases of rabies in animals occur in wildlife. Contact with infected bats is the leading cause of human rabies deaths in this country; at least 7 out of 10 Americans who die from rabies in the US were infected by bats.

Per CDC guidelines, if your pet comes in contact with a bat make sure to come in for an exam for the veterinarian to review the severity of the exposure and complete a risk assessment of the incident. Pets will also require a rabies booster.

Please remember that healthy bats avoid humans and are not aggressive, but they can bite if touched. These animals are important to our ecosystem and help with pollination, insect control, and so much more.

If you see a bat, make sure to avoid getting close and call the OKC Green Team to safely relocate them.

It’s finally time! is here.

This week’s post really stumped everyone! Which is thankfully good as it means not many people have dealt with it. That’s because the answer to this week’s is…

A mast cell tumor!

All those small granulations you’re seeing in the slide are what we are looking at.

Mast cells are allergy cells and play a role in the allergic response. When exposed to allergens, mast cells release chemicals and compounds (called degranulation). One of these compounds is histamine. Histamine is what causes itchiness, sneezing, and runny eyes and nose – sign of allergies 🤧. Ever heard of antiHISTAMINES? 😏

A mast cell tumor (MCT) is a type of cancerous tumor consisting of mast cells. These are most commonly seen as bumps in the skin, but they can also affect other internal organs. MCTs are the most common skin tumor in dogs.

Although any breed can get MCT, certain breeds are more susceptible. MCTs are particularly common in boxers, English bulldogs, Boston terriers, pugs, golden retrievers, cocker spaniels, schnauzers, Staffordshire terriers, beagles, Rhodesian ridgebacks, Weimaraners, Chinese shar peis, and Labrador retrievers.

MCTs have been classically called “the great pretenders” because they may resemble an insect bite, wart, allergic reaction, or other less serious skin tumors. Clinical signs may also vary, so it is especially important to make note of any lumps and bumps to discuss with your veterinarian.

For example, some patients have a raised bump on or just under the skin, and may be red, ulcerated, or swollen. Some may be present for many months without growing much, others can appear suddenly and grow very quickly. Sometimes they can suddenly grow quickly after months of no change. They may appear to fluctuate in size, getting larger or smaller, even daily. These size changes can occur spontaneously or when the tumor is agitated, which causes degranulation and subsequent swelling of the surrounding tissue due to the histamine release.

In our clinic, we diagnose with fine-needle aspiration. This involves taking a small needle with a syringe and suctioning a sample of cells directly from the tumor and placing them on a microscope slide.

From there, treatment varies depending on the grade and varies from surgery to chemo and radiation treatment.

Congrats to the smarties who got this right!

Client- “I just got a new puppy and I’m really anxious they’re going to be scared of the vet”
Us- “Don’t worry, we’ve got you 😎”

Has your pet ever had a bad experience at a veterinarian’s office and are expecting your pet to be anxious? We hear this forewarning a lot with new clients who have never been to a Fear Free clinic before.

We think the results speak for themselves 😏. Once you go you don’t go back 😎

As National Veterinary Technician Week continues, we wanted to give another shout out to our wonderful nurses.

Did you know that our medical team attends a yearly conference to continue their training? Yup- you heard that right. Your OKC Vet Campus nurses (and doctors and support staff) take a weekend away from their families to go attend a multi-day event filled with lectures over new technologies, experimental treatments, case studies, and more.

The love our technicians have for their patients is unparalleled and we couldn’t be more grateful. In such an emotionally and physically demanding field, it can be difficult to find genuine people who truly care for and enjoy their jobs.

Thank you Jessica, Ana, Lauren, Anna, Ashlee, and Sammi 🙌🏻

🗣‼️ Are you in your preventions era??

We KNOW you're all tired of us preaching about heartworm and flea+tick preventions 356 days a year. That's because the temperatures in Oklahoma generally do NOT get cold enough in the Winter for LONG enough to kill off larva. Consequently, Oklahoma has been consistently in the top 15 most heartworm prevalent states in the last 10 years. We even spent several years on and off in the top 10.

Signs of heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss. As heartworm disease progresses, pets may develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen.

For a limited-time only, buy a combination of BRAVECTO (fluralaner) and SENTINEL Brand Products from our clinic and get instant rebates worth up to $100.*† OR get instant rebates of up to $40 on Bravecto.
