We firmly believe that all dogs need a foundation in obedience. We are not common dogs.”
He wasn’t.

In our experience, many problematic behaviors can be prevented by an obedience-based understanding and respect between the dog and their family. Additionally, the path to eliminating existing problem behaviors also starts with structured obedience. Our job is to help you and your dog become a great team - a great companion while you’re binging TV, a polite host when guests come to your home, a bud

dy to go with you to the local brewery, or a workout partner on that jog at the park. The original "Not Common Dog" was a German Shepherd named Duncan. He came to Mallori at 4 years old with awkward social skills, extreme (extreme) situational anxiety, and limited housedog experience. Throughout his lengthy training process she always told him: “You’re better than this. And neither is yours. They’re exceptional. We just have to show them what we want.

My dog training mantra so far in 2025: Train deliberately.

In the last month I've had this awesome discussion with several of my owners. I wanted to share it with you.

Being deliberate, or staying in the moment, with your dog isn't easy but it's critical. Every moment is a training moment when you are working toward new behavior. Do not miss the opportunities between now and your next goal.

Let me give you an example.

Let's say you'd like to take your dog to the park for a nice controlled walk. You don't want them pulling on you, jumping on people, barking at other dogs, all of that great manners stuff.
Your training session does not begin at the park.

Here's what that walk-the-dog session actually looks like:
• Deliberately spending time making sure the dogs don't jump or crowd or bolt in and out of the door when you let them out for the first morning potty.
• Deliberately teaching that jumping on you or rushing the bowl as you set down breakfast isn't okay.
• When it is time to go for that walk, deliberately spending time training that the leash only goes on when their behavior is calm.
• Then, since your goal is a controlled walk, deliberately starting that walk: from the house to the door, from the door to the car, from the car to the trail.

Don't be in a hurry. Stay in the moment. Train your dog with consistent expectations and don't skip all of the important training that happens along the way.

I have several program options, but I want to talk about LEAP: the Learn Every (At-home!) Program.

Offbeat LEAP is a 3 week cooperative training program that combines sessions focused on the dog with weekly owner education.

This training path is best for dogs 20 weeks and older and owners who want to kickstart obedience without sending the dog outside of the home for board-and-train. LEAP establishes a foundation for on-leash obedience, nuisance behaviors, and house manners. The curriculum includes, but is not limited to: walking on a leash, sit, down, stay, and coming when called. House manners and nuisance behaviors will be assessed on a case-by-case basis at the first appointment.

I start with an evaluation at your house so that we can get to know each other and make sure that LEAP is the right choice for your pack.

When your dog starts training, I will visit your home 3 times a week to focus on your dog while you are at work or going about your daily life.

On the 4th day of our week I meet with you to go over what I've taught so far and make sure that you have enough hands-on instruction to work homework.
You will then use the weekend and the following week to reinforce those lessons.

If you're not ready to take the LEAP yet, I also offer a-la-cart private lessons at your home (or somewhere convenient for you), Pack Walks, and even workshops.

Let's get started!

Workshop announcement time!

It's time to enroll in the spring AKC Canine Good Citizen test prep workshop with Cassie Hartman - part of my GoDog workshop series!

This 5 week workshop will give you and your dog structured opportunities to practice skills and test for American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Community Canine (CGCA), and Urban CGC (CGCU). Each week we will meet at a dog-friendly venue or park OKC and work on the skills needed to pass the test.

Classes will meet around 10am on Saturday 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, and 5/10. All classes will meet in Oklahoma City - exact locations will vary and will be announced as we get closer to the dates.
Testing will be held on Saturday, May 31th. Alternate dates are scheduled in case of Oklahoma weather.

Prerequisites:
• Dogs must have a basic concept of Heel, Sit, Down, and Stay. If you need help, let’s set up a lesson ASAP so you can be ready to start group class in April.
• Dogs must be non-reactive (not barking or growling) around strangers and unfamiliar dogs. If you’re working on this, I can help you with that in lessons. We’ll tackle the reactivity and revisit the class option once your pup is feeling more secure.

Cassie has been involved in dog sports and training since 2003. She is a AKC CGC and Trick Dog evaluator and is actively training/competing her personal dogs in obedience, rally, agility, scent work, barn hunt, dock diving, and more.

Cost: $200/dog for the 5 session workshop and testing.

Space is limited! Email me at [email protected] for more information and to enroll!

One of my favorite things in training is that moment when the lightbulb comes on for a dog - the shift from "What? Why?" to "oh! Gotcha! This is fun!"

For the first two days of LEAP, Niah wasn't sure why this was all so important to me. By day three she realized that training was a blast. Training meant she got to ✨ go and do dog stuff! ✨
Part of my job is making sure the dog in front of me feels like good behavior is good for them. Niah's favorite rewards were exploration time, pupperoni, or learning a new command.

Hi, dog lovers! I love to reintroduce myself when the new year rolls around: I'm Mallori!

I have been training dogs professionally for nearly 20 years. I am a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, the International Association of Canine Professionals, and an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. My dog Leni (far right) is a therapy dog who loves working in libraries and school systems.

I firmly believe that all dogs need a foundation in obedience.

In my experience, many problematic behaviors can be prevented by an obedience-based understanding and respect between the dog and their family. Additionally, the path to eliminating existing problem behaviors starts with structured obedience.

My job is to help you and your dog become a great team. I want you to have a great companion while you’re binging TV, a polite host when guests come to your home, a buddy to go with you to the local brewery, or a workout partner on that jog at the park.

Your dog can't live up to their potential without your help!

Today was the first Pack Walk of the new year! We got drizzled on a tiny bit, but we out ran the cold snap.

I like to plan goals for myself personally and professionally when the year rolls over. Those goals include my dogs and yours. I have some new things picked out for our Pack to do!

What's on your list for your dog?

Meet Niah! She's a thinker and a doer.
Today, Niah and I started her LEAP journey with a trip to the park for obedience and drive assessment.

She's going to be a professional dog with an important job, so our time together will focus on making sure she's well rounded: obedience, public manners, distraction tolerance, and some introductory task training.

As always, you can watch Niah's progress in the stories here or on the Offbeat Obedience Instagram page.

Sweet Bonnie, my Christmas LEAP dog!

She's such a sweet pup and she's grown a lot in the last weeks. She's a dog that loves to please, loves to play, and loves to make her humans smile.
She's mom's shadow and they're a great team.

I know we're all feeling wiped, but it's - it's time to love our community.
I am passionate about the work going on at The Homeless Alliance.

❗️Email me proof of any donation (monetary or clothing) you make to The Homeless Alliance between now and the new year to enter a raffle for 1 FREE private lesson.

Here's a link to learn what they need, but I know that new underwear, new socks, new warm hats, gloves, men's pants (especially smaller sizes), winter coats, and blankets are welcome - especially as the weather gets colder. https://www.homelessalliance.org/donate-items

If you'd like to drop clothing donations off to me, I'm happy to deliver them!

❗️Additionally, Offbeat Obedience will match your monetary donations up to $500.

Being unhoused is complex. It is far more complicated than "get a job" - I encourage everyone to learn more about the reality of transitioning out of homelessness. The Homeless Alliance is a great place to start learning, donating, or volunteering.

One entry per person; drawing for 1 free lesson will be announced on Facebook on January 5th. Lessons can be for your or can be gifted as a set or individually to other families.
