BIG NEWS, everyone! 🚨The first monarch butterfly of the 2025 spring migration has arrived to Oklahoma from Mexico! 🦋🧡

Seen yesterday near Marlow by Donna Griffin Mayes, this tattered female monarch is getting some much needed nectar from purple henbit, an early-blooming “weed” that provides critical nectar for pollinators. 💪 🌸

What an exciting moment…Congratulations, Donna! 🎉

How can you help the monarch butterflies as they arrive to our great state? 🦋

If you’re looking for a plant that requires minimal effort to thrive, coreopsis is an excellent choice. Its low-maintenance nature means you can enjoy its beauty without constant attention.
BENEFITS!
Long Blooming Period: Many coreopsis varieties have a long blooming season, providing you with continuous bursts of color from late spring to early fall.

Attracts Pollinators: Tickseed’s nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for pollinators like bees and butterflies. By planting coreopsis, you’re supporting local wildlife and promoting a healthier garden ecosystem.

Cut flowers: Coreopsis flowers make lovely cut flowers for bouquets and arrangements, allowing you to bring a piece of your garden indoors.

Drought Tolerance: Once established, coreopsis can withstand periods of drought, making it a water-wise option for regions with limited water availability.

ALSO!With its spreading habit and strong root system, coreopsis can help prevent soil erosion on slopes or in areas prone to erosion.

Bright yellow 1 - 2" blooms with lance-shaped leaves on an upright, clumping form. This keystone native perennial is a favorite of pollinators, has special value for native bees, and attracts finches and songbirds. It's also the larval host plant for several species of moths, including the wavy-lined emerald moth. This easy-care wildflower can spread by seed, so be mindful of where you plant it.

Blooming period: Apr - Jun (will flower the first year)
Sun requirements: Full sun
Preferred soil: Medium-dry to dry, well-drained (not too fertile)
Size at maturity: 2 - 24 tall by 1.5' wide
USDA Zones: 3 - 8

This low-growing native succulent features clusters of star-shaped pink flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. It's a tough little plant that thrives in sunny, dry spots, making it perfect for those challenging areas. $1 per plug. Although an annual, it readily self-seeds.

A few years ago, CommonWealth launched an initiative to support individuals interested in market farming and enhancing their gardening skills. This year, we are partnering with 12 farmers, ranging from hobby gardeners to full-time market farmers.

The Partner Farmer program offers a combination of fertile growing beds, an irrigation system, additional infrastructure, and valuable community connections for new and emerging growers. Our newly constructed Wash/Pack Shed is a recent addition to our infrastructure improvements.

Each partner-farmer manages their own section of rows and has the freedom to decide what to plant and how to market their products. While partner-farmers pay a modest monthly fee for water and electricity, CommonWealth does not charge rent because we understand how challenging it can be for new growers to make ends meet.

Anyone interested in becoming a partner-farmer with CommonWealth is encouraged to email us at [email protected]

Our opening day will be this Saturday, March 15th! I have a ton of seedlings filling the greenhouses and just about every other space I can snag. Thanks to my new greenhouse, I have thousands of plants in the pipeline, with a good number ready to plant right now.

So let's get to planting!

March is the ideal time to plant cool-season spring vegetables. Think leafy greens, roots, and all the brassicas: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, kale, and mustards. All are fairly cold-hardy and can take a frost or even a hard freeze if you protect them with some row cover. They need to be planted now so they have time to mature before the seriously hot weather arrives.

Along with cool-season vegetables, we'll have some winter annuals. These plants flower in spring, set seed in the summer, and germinate in the fall.

Bad news first. I lost the broccoli. 😔 So, no broccoli this year.
Good news! I'll have mini broccoli next week, which tastes better!

Come see us!

Yay! 🌻🌻🌻

Leave the leaves this winter!

🍂 Fallen leaves provide essential winter shelter for many insects, as they overwinter in the leaf litter, offering protection from cold weather and predators.

🍁 Forms a natural mulch, contributing to soil health and insulating perennial plants.

🍂 Letting leaves biodegrade naturally prevents the increase of methane gas created when organic material is sent to landfills.

Wow! This is AMAZING! I'm so proud of what we've ALL accomplished together this year! Thank you! Can't wait for 2025!
