Eastern Red Columbine
The eastern red columbine is one of the early-blooming wildflowers in the eastern and central United States. Its bloom period remarkably coincides with the northward migration of the ruby-throated hummingbird in the spring (a result of a long evolutionary relationship). This native columbine has a unique bicolored bloom,
red petals with a yellow center.

Blooming period: Mar to Jul
Sun requirements: Part sun to shade
Preferred soil: Dry to moist
Size at maturity: 2 - 3' tall and wide
USDA Zones: 3 - 8

*Eastern Red Columbine is a larval host plant to the Columbine Duskywing skipper

๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ข๐™ฎ ๐™Ž๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™™๐™–๐™ฎ!

Tomorrow looks like it's going to be a washout with storms, so I'm doing a pop-up sale Sunday, April 27th from 11 am - 3 pm. The OKC Marathon is on Sunday as well, so coming in from straight north of the sale (on Western) or east is probably the best bet. We're starting a bit later than usual in order to avoid most of the marathon street closures.

We'll still be open 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday
for anyone who wants to brave the weather! If you order online and would like car-side service on Saturday, email me directly and let me know; we'll have your order boxed up and will pop it in your backseat when you pull up in front.

I have 3 varieties this year; all are $4 for 10 slips or $7 for 20 slips.
Beauregard: my long-time favorite, high yields, great flavor, a very popular variety.
Covington: a newer variety with excellent yields of uniform, beautiful sweet potatoes.
O'Henry: tan skin, white flesh, with a lighter, more delicate flavor than orange sweet potatoes.

Beneficial Insect of the Week
Ladybugs (Ladybird, Lady Beetle)
Coccinellidae
Ladybugs are valuable garden allies in both the larvae and adult stages. They are voracious predators of aphids and scale insects and especially love the flat-topped flowers of dill, fennel, and yarrow (or any plants covered with aphids!)

The next time you notice aphids in the garden, take a
deep breath and remember they are an important food
source for other insects, like the ladybug.

Pictured is a native seven-spotted lady beetle. The image also shows ladybug larvae.

LIGHTS OUT OKLAHOMA! ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿฆ‹

Did you know? Turning off non-essential lights at night benefits migrating birds, as well as prevents predators targeting pollinators attracted to lights?

Help millions of birds currently migrating through Oklahoma by simply turning off non-essential lights between 11 P.M. and 6 A.M. Birds can confuse bright lights for stars and other celestial lights which they use to navigate. When confused, birds lose their way, becoming exhausted and frequently strike buildings and windows. By turning off lights, you save energy, help birds and lessen light pollution helping you to see more stars!

This public service campaign is produced by the Oklahoma Animal Coalition.
