Eye contact and hand signals help teach your dog to tune-out distractions and stay attuned with you. We start with a treat lure to shape the behavior. After a couple of practice sessions, we will remove the treat lure by holding the treats off to the side or behind your back. We avoid using verbals cues such as “watch me” or the dog’s name to prevent the dog from learning how to ignore our voice.
To begin “Sit With Hand Signal”: Use a treat as a lure between your middle and index fingers with a flat palm open towards the dog. Guide attention from the dog’s nose up to your shoulder. Guiding up from the nose should prompt the dog to sit- what goes up in the front, goes down in the back. Once the dog’s bottom touches the floor and is sat, mark the behavior with a click. Then feed the treat!
We’re having the dog turn and face us to work on fast, responsive behavior.
