⚠️ Medical Monday: Rabies Alert for Oklahoma Residents ⚠️

Several positive rabies cases have already been confirmed in Oklahoma this year. To protect your family and animals, make sure all pets and livestock are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.

🐶 Dogs and cats 12 weeks or older are eligible for vaccination.
📅 A booster is required one year after the initial shot, then every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine type.

Last year, a dog in Cleveland County tested positive for rabies—it had previously been vaccinated but was not current on its shots. Staying up to date is critical for protection.

What you need to know about rabies in Oklahoma:

🦨 Primary carriers: Skunks and bats
🦠 Transmission: Through saliva, typically via bite wounds
🧤 Handling bats: Always wear gloves! Even if you don’t feel a bite, bat teeth are tiny and you might be bitten without knowing it. Handling a bat with bare hands is considered an exposure.

✅ Be proactive:

Keep vaccinations current

Avoid contact with wild animals

Report unusual wildlife behavior

We love our Zuky girl!!! Zuky had an infection that created a large open wound over her side from behind her shoulders and extended down the side of her abdomen. We sedated her, debrided the wound, and tried to repair it but unfortunately the tissue was too compromised to save. Zuky's family has worked with us diligently over the last 2 months to provide Zuky the best possible outcome, and after many bandage changes, we're so thrilled that Zuky has made a complete recovery!! Through this time, we've bonded with Zuky and her family and have created a wonderful relationship. Zuky, you're a rockstar!!!!

Did you know that dogs and cats can be infected with raccoon roundworms as well? Did you know that some monthly heartworm preventatives will deworm your pet monthly for Bayliscaris and other zoonotic parasites (meaning their transmissible to people)?

We hope this sweet boy is healed quickly. 🙏🏻

People are coming together to rally behind the family of a Pryor boy with a rare infection caused by a parasite called Baylisascaris. The family is hoping to raise money to help with future surgeries.

❗️Wildfire Update - A message from hospital director Dr. Kelly Black❗️

Yesterday was a heartbreaking day for many in our area. Our thoughts and prayers go out to each of you that have been affected by the wildfires, especially those that have lost homes and animals.

Animal Housing:
The OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital has already taken animals from several displaced families. We do have limited space available for small and large animals for temporary housing if needed. Please contact the reception area at 405-744-7000, or the Cohn boarding facility at 405-744-3647 for more information on availability (very limited due to Spring Break boarders). Temporary boarding services will be offered at NO charge to those who have been displaced.

Injured Animals:
If you have any animals that have been injured by the fires, we do have a Disaster Relief funds that can be applied toward their care. Funds are limited. Please contact our ER services through the reception desk if you have an animal injured by the fires.

Wildlife:
If you have injured wildlife, we are happy to help with them. Our permit does not allow us to take in deer or rabies carriers, but most other species are welcome- if they need assistance.

If you have other animal needs that are not listed here, please contact our reception desk and they will do their best to direct you to the appropriate resources.

We want to thank all of our patrons who contributed to our donation drive for the Homeless Alliance! With your help, we were able to donate 120 doses of flea/tick prevention, over 50 lbs of dry food and over 24 cans of wet food, cat litter, a litter box, toys, collars, leashes, and food bowls. We even had a few donations of socks and shirts for people in need.
