Smokey is enjoying his new sand bath! Sand baths are a ✨MUST✨ for dwarf hamsters—Syrian hamsters enjoy digging in them, but they usually won’t use them to bathe. Dwarf hamsters will roll in a sand bath to remove excess oils from their fur (like chinchillas!).

Unlike chinchillas, hamsters cannot use “bathing dust” which is too fine, or calcium sand in the reptile section (it’s not good for reptiles either because it can cause intestinal blockages 😬). They need desert sand that’s specifically designed for hamsters.

Smokey is still patiently waiting for his perfect forever home! He would do best in a home without small children and with hamster-savvy pawrents that can continue his trust training. This sweet little hammy is called Ember! 🔥
Ember is a winter white dwarf hamster and is approximately 1 year and 3 months old. Ember was rescued by OKC Animal Welfare as apart of a cruelty/confiscation case, along with Smokey, the other dwarf hamster in our rescue. 😔

Ember wasn’t getting much attention at the shelter, so we decided to try our luck at finding him a perfect home from the comfort of a foster home. He’s done pretty good here, although he’s still a little shy and reclusive. When he does decide to leave the burrow and interact with his foster family, he’s such a charming little fellow! ♥️

He’s a curious guy and likes to explore his habitat. Ember is enjoying trying new treats and snacks that his foster family offers him—he especially likes Cheerios and fresh cucumber! 🥒

Ember would do best in a home without small children (hamsters are “low-maintenance”, but they are NOT great with kids). An ideal home would be with a hamster-savvy family that will continue his trust-training.

Ember FINALLY came out of hiding to have a refreshing veggie snack! How handsome is Ember? 🐹🥰

We want to keep an eye on sweet Ember a few more days to make sure he’s adjusting well after his big transition from shelter to foster home, but he should be ready to find his forever home in a few days! Stay tuned for updates.

Meet Smokey! 🐹
This little gentleman is a Campbell’s dwarf hamster (often called a Russian dwarf hamster in pet stores), and he’s about 1 year and 3 months old. Smokey came to OKC Animal Welfare as part of a cruelty/confiscation case, along with another hamster. 😔

He wasn’t getting much attention at the shelter, so we brought him into foster care to give him a calmer environment while he waits for his perfect forever home. Smokey has quite an interesting personality! Campbell’s dwarfs are known for being a bit feisty, and Smokey definitely fits that description. He’s set some firm boundaries and isn’t quite ready for cuddles—yet.

That said, he’s already made great progress! He now takes pea flakes gently from our fingers, which is a big step forward considering that, when he first arrived, he would simply slap treats away.

It’s clear Smokey was either mishandled or not socialized properly in the past. The ideal home for him would be with an experienced hamster parent—someone patient and familiar with the quirks of dwarf hamsters. With time, consistency, and gentle trust-training, Smokey has the potential to truly come out of his shell and be a wonderful companion. ♥️

Look at these sweet little dwarf hamsters we sprung from the shelter! They spent a few weeks with the amazing staff at OKC Animal Welfare but weren’t getting much attention. We’ve named them Smokey & Ember, and they’re both approximately 1 year and 3 months old. They’re both healthy and active and decompressing in their foster home, so they should be available for adoption in a few days!

This cheerful little yellow Lutino Parakeet is as bright and sweet as her name!

Sunny came to us after her beloved owner passed away, and now she’s ready to bring her sunshine to a new forever home. She’s a quiet, tidy little lady who doesn’t make much mess—just happy chirps and good company. 🌞
