We love our canine companions, and it is important that they stay healthy and active. For Active Dog Month we want to encourage and motivate people to get their dogs active. Dogs need exercise and fun maybe more than their owners. Exercise also helps strengthen the bond between you and your pet, so let’s explore some ways to be active this month:
• Longer walks.
• Physical activities: Hiking, running.
• Mental Stimulation: Puzzle games or hide and seek.

April is Active Dog month! That means exercise, fresh air, and plenty of stimulation. Learn the best ways to partake.

In Thai, the Siamese cat is also referred to as Maeo Thai or Maeo Sayam. Their origins trace back to Thailand, historically known as Siam. The earliest depiction of these cats is from ancient manuscripts, the Tamara Maew from the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351 to 1767 AD).
The cat has a distinctive color point coat, resulting from a temperature sensitive albinism. Through crossbreeding, several other breeds have been developed: the Oriental and Colorpoint Short Hair, Himalayan, Cornish Rex, Sphynx, Peterbald and the long-haired Siamese are recognized as the Balinese cat.

It is time to raise awareness about the importance of pet identification on Every Day is Tag Day. We aim to educate and encourage owners to take steps to make sure their pet is easily identifiable. Make sure to have your pets microchipped and registered or a collar with ID tags. Proper identification can help a pet return home safely and even reduce shelter populations with lost pets.

Having proper identification can mean the difference between life and death, it is out responsibility to ensure their well being and safe return home.

Sadly, statistics indicate that missing pets rarely find their way home. Approximately 10 million pets are lost or stolen in the United States each year, and more than 6 million animals wind up in the nation’s animal shelters. Given that dogs and cats in shelters without ID are much less likely to...

April is National Heartworms Awareness Month, and we want to focus on raising awareness about heartworm disease and prevention. This disease is transmitted through mosquito bites and affects both dogs and cats. Dogs can be treated for heartworm disease, unfortunately cats cannot. We will post more throughout the month for awareness. This is a preventable disease; we must do our part as owners and protect our furry companions.
Please keep your pets on monthly prevention. We recommend NexGard Plus as it is a one and done monthly dosing that does flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal parasite prevention.

World Stray Animal Day is observed annually on April 4th. This day aims to raise awareness about stray animals worldwide and the challenges they face. A “stray” animal is defined as pets who have been abandoned or lost. The date was chosen because it is exactly six months after World Animal Day, on October 4th. It is a day that serves as a reminder to show compassion and take action for the welfare of stray animals around the globe.

The World Health Organization estimates there are approximately 200 million stray dogs and 480 million stray cats roaming the streets worldwide. If you are interested in helping, there are ways to help.
• Feeding
• Foster
• Distribute Flyers
• Donate toys and blankets
• Organize spay/neuter and vaccination Campaigns.
Consider spaying or neutering your pets to prevent unwanted litters, or overpopulation. Looking for a pet think about adoption rather than buying. Microchip your pets to make it easier to get them home to you.

Learn more about World Stray Animals Day and discover the many ways you can help stray cats that live in your area. Dive in to find out when this cat holiday is.

Last Month was Tick Bite prevention month and April is Prevent Lyme Disease Month. It is important to protect your pets from this disease which is why we push for flea and tick prevention. It takes about a full day of feeding for a tick to transmit this disease which makes prevention perfect for killing ticks when they bite your pet. If you are active with your pet or prone to ticks in your area it is important to not only keep them on prevention but to also test them annually with their heartworm test.

We here at Cherokee Hills Veterinary Hospital recommend the one and done NexGard Plus which helps prevent fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites in one monthly chew.

Don’t Walk Your Dog Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the idea that not all dogs have a good experience when they go out for walks, and it may not actually be good for them. While regular exercise is essential, skipping a day of walking won’t make you a bad pet owner.
The Importance of Daily Exercise
• Dogs need daily exercise to stay healthy and mentally stimulated.
• Walks provide physical activity for you and quality time together.
• Regular walks can help prevent boredom induced behaviors like chewing or digging.
Breed Specific Needs
• Frequency depends on the breed.
• Herding and Sporting breeds require multiple walks per day.
• Other breeds may be satisfied with shorter walks.
Alternative to Walking
• Backyard play: Play fetch with your dog for example.
• Indoor Play: Small breeds can enjoy chasing a ball throughout the house.
• Puzzle Toys: great for mental stimulation.
Skipping a walk occasionally is okay, there are plenty of other ways to meet your dog’s needs and keep them happy.

The Bull Terrier did not have the greatest start to life. Bulldogs were bred originally for bullbaiting, when the sport became illegal, they tried moving the sport indoors in the cellar of taverns. It was difficult to pit a bull against a dog and be inconspicuous about it, so they turned to dogfighting. Realizing the dog was too slow they started breeding with terrier breeds to make a dog with the power of a bulldog and the fiery spirit of terriers. Once dog fighting was banned, they became the gentleman’s dog in Britain.

Ticks are parasitic arachnids that feed on blood and carry diseases. This week is Tick Bite Prevention week, and we will share the importance of keeping ourselves and our pets safe. If you are someone who enjoys outdoor activities with your pet it is important to have them on the proper preventive.

In fact, ticks can be active every season - any day when temperatures reach 4°C/39°F and above.

As many of us head outdoors to enjoy the spring weather, here are a few reminders about how to avoid the risk of tick bites and Lyme disease:
