March is Pet Poison Prevention Month. It is important to be aware of potentially harmful substances that can poison your pet. These can range from human prescriptions, food, over-the-counter medications, chocolate, cleaning supplies and more. If you even suspect your pet could’ve ingested something poisonous, contact your veterinarian immediately and follow their instructions. You will most likely also need to contact poison control.

Today is an interesting day, it’s Dogs in Yellow Day. This day celebrates and brings awareness about dogs who are anxious or reactive. Using a yellow collar, bandana, lead or vest helps indicate to others that they need to keep space from you or your dog. If you are working with your reactive dog this can also let other owners who do not understand canine body language be aware.

West Highland White Terriers, or Westie for short, were originally called Roseneath Terriers. In 1903, Edward Donald Malcom owned working game terriers with reddish fur. It was said that on a hunt, the dog was mistaken for a fox and was shot, that gave Malcom the idea to breed white dogs. Thus, the West Highland Terrier came to be, and they were also bred to be used to hunt rodents. The Westie came to the U.S. in 1907 and was an instant hit!

Today we honor the services and sacrifices of the military, law enforcement and working dogs throughout history. On March 13, 1942, they began training dogs for the War Dog Program, “K-9 Corps,” making them officially part of the U.S. Armed Forces. Not only do we honor those in the military but those in law enforcement and those with disabilities. Dogs are embedded everywhere from search and rescue, sniffing for drugs, chasing suspects and much more.

Working dogs are an integral part of modern military life, but dogs have been accompanying humans into combat since before recorded history.

Developed in the 17th century, Akitas are Japan’s ancient spitz-type breed of the north. The emperor banished a nobleman to the northernmost island Honshu. There he encouraged his barons to breed a large, versatile hunting dog. After generations of selective breeding came the Akita, a powerful hunter with a strong work ethic, working in packs to hunt big game, boar, deer and the Yezo bear. Akita’s were once restricted to the royal family but now they are employed by everyone as world class family guardians. There were multiple times the Akita almost went extinct. To ensure their survival, a Japanese national breed club was founded in 1927.

Akitas hold a special place in Japanese culture, families of a newborn receiving an Akita figure and Hachiko, famous and loyal.

On this day we show appreciation to all the dogs who act as their owners’ eyes and ears. These dogs are very well trained and devoted to keeping their person safe. This year The Seeing Eye, an organization that breeds and trains dogs for the blind, celebrates 95 years! I will post a link below about them and the amazing work that they do.

The famous New York City street crossing was captured shortly after Morris Frank and Buddy returned from training in Switzerland.

There is no shame in getting a dog trainer to help you with your pet. It is their job after all, and their goal is to help dogs find confidence and be well behaved. Do your research and pick the best trainer that fits you and your dog’s life. After working with a trainer, it is still up to you to reinforce what they have learned to keep them well trained, continued training at home after training is completed is essential.

Positive training is very important, always use rewards, be positive and patient. It takes time but the result is awesome.

Exercise is important, this month we are focusing on getting out and moving with our dog. Walking provides both mental and physical stimulation for your pet. We encourage you to walk with your dogs on trails, in parks or even hike. Provide new scents for your dog and some variety. Take a walk with your canine companion, a little cardio will do the body good.

Training is important and can save lives. Kennel training allows your pet to have a safe place to go during stressful events or even in some emergencies. Recall is especially useful if you aren’t within arm’s reach of your pet. Teaching your pet to stay is more important than shake. Train the basics and then move on to tricks.

I have provided a link that will help you if you decide you want to try training at home. Good luck and have fun!

This month we encourage people to bring their best friends inside. All dogs need fresh food, water, and shelter but they also need love, attention, and companionship. When it’s hot or cold outside, bring them in. A dog needs more than being chained to a pole in the back or front yard, they need to run and play, live a full life. If you know someone with an outside dog, offer to play with the dog or even take it for a walk.

No dog left out! January is Unchain A Dog Month. Celebrate with us and encourage your community to bring their dogs inside this winter.
