“New research from the University of Lincoln, published today in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, finds that in a typical situation where proponents of electronic collars often recommend them, positive reinforcement training by trainers who specialize in reward-based training works better than training with or without a shock collar by trainers who would normally use a shock collar.”

New research on dog training methods for issues with off-leash disobedience found positive reinforcement worked best.

Happy Fri-Yay! 🦴
We have two classes starting this month!

🐾 Basic obedience is a 5 week course for dogs 6 months and older.
Your dog will learn loose leash walking, polite greetings, settle, and recall.
Starts July 23rd from 10am-11am

🐾 Puppy 101 is a 5 week class for puppies 8 weeks to 5 months.
Your puppy will get to socialize with other puppies in a controlled environment, learn sit, down, loose leash walking, and recall.
We also cover body language and how dogs communicate!
Starts July 19th from 6pm-7pm

Both classes cost $210 and are held at Golden Mutt Jack 9201 N Western Ave
First class is orientation, so no dogs!

Make sure you’re looking out for your pups who don’t care for fireworks! 💥
Sasha is able to ignore the big booms with her frozen Kong. Stuff with kibble and peanut butter then stuck in the freezer for about 30 mins.
Make sure you also:
Give your dog a safe space to hide out in like your bedroom or their kennel
Have some classical or calming music playing in the background 🎶

Sure... I'm a dog trainer, but that doesn't mean my job is all about dogs. (I admit, I also thought it would be all about dogs when I first got started!)

However, once I got started on my professional dog training career, I quickly realized that my job also required me to understand and teach my human clients.

Honestly, it really is more like 25% dog training and 75% human training, but that's okay! Teaching people how to have better and more cooperative relationships with their dogs and eliminating their frustrations and struggles is just as fulfilling for me.

I've had my fair share of struggles with the variety of dog's I've had so it gives me an insiders perspective when it comes to what you might be going through. I do my best to try to never lose sight of what my human clients might be juggling as well.

Positive reinforcement is about strengthening your bond and understanding of your dog and their behavior and how we can correct it.
It takes time and patience! Results don’t happen overnight. You have to give time for the dog to learn new behaviors to replace old, reinforced behaviors.

A thought about "balanced" training:

We all desire balance and harmony in our animals as well as ourselves. This can be achieved with patience, kindness and persistence. It also requires respect for the welfare of the animals in our charge. They are sensitive and they make choices that can be reinforced, or not reinforced (or they can make you laugh every 10 feet like a certain Aussie named Rami).

But when a trainer uses the word "balance" as a euphemism for punishment and intimidation, there is no equilibrium, no fairness, and certainly no balance. Instead, the word should be a red flag, and red flags are best avoided.
