As a dog owner we don't always get to be the good guy, sometimes we have to be the bad guy. We have to do things that others won’t for the well-being of our dogs. If we don't, we could have some serious liability on our hands.
When strangers want to pet our dogs, it is ok to say no. In fact If your dog shows any signs of stress or extreme over excitement in the presence of strangers, then say NO! You will be the bad guy, but you will also avoid someone getting nipped, bit, or mauled, which may leave you responsible for damages and could require you to get rid of your dog or the dog being put down.
When strangers bring their dog up to your dog, it is ok to say NO! You will be the bad guy. But If your dog reacts and causes injuries to the “friendly dog”, you will be liable for the injuries and vet visits aren’t cheap.
If your dog likes to jump on people and you correct the dog for the behavior, you will be the bad guy. But if you don’t correct and stop the behavior and the dog knocks the person down and they break their arm, hip, or get a head injury from hitting the ground, you are liable for the injuries.
If your dog is reactive/aggressive towards people or dogs and you correct the dog for that behavior, you are the bad guy. However if you don’t correct the behavior and your dog slips out of its collar and attacks someone or a dog, you are liable for the injuries. Even if the dog doesn’t slip out of the collar, but tears something in your shoulder, you are liable for the injuries.
Our dogs are our responsibility and we are liable for anything that the dog does. It is our duty to be the bad guy when it comes to our dogs. If we aren’t willing to take that serious and be the bad guy, then we will be dealing with the liabilities and consequences of having to be the good guy.

Tip Tuesday, Laurie discusses situational awareness and being respectful when out with your dog.

•Pet your dog, all the time
•Talk to your dog, all the time
•Allow your dog to follow you, all the time
•Allow your dog to be on your lap or laying on your feet, all the time
•Pet, soothe, comfort your dog when it whines or barks for attention...or is simply anxious
•Allow your dog to demand affection/interactions
•Be emotionally dependent on your dog to the point that unhealthy dependency and interactions are no longer noticed
•Allow your dog to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants—aka, provide no structure, rules, or accountability
•Foster an environment of chaos, stress, and anxiety
•Refuse to train and pattern calmness
•Refuse to crate train your dog
•Refuse to correct your dog when inappropriate behavior occurs
•Refuse to train your dog how to be independent/alone by using a “Place” command, “Downstay, and/or “away” time in the crate
•Let your dog out of the crate when it whines or barks
•Avoid training or anything that makes your dog temporarily uncomfortable or unhappy—in other words, cater to your dog’s every desire/need, designing your life around your dog, rather than having your dog fit into yours
•And many, many more...

Basically, baby, soothe, allow, enable, disable, lean on, omit teaching necessary life skills, prioritize what feels good for you rather than what does good for your dog, and through this master plan of leadership-free chaos, and systematic cultivation of creating a toxic dependency between dog and human...you’ll ensure that when you leave, your dog will be a true emotional mess, because you haven’t prepared them to be calm, obedient, strong, resilient, robust, independent, and alone.

Graduates of our Day Training program. These dogs came to training for a variety of issues ranging from jumping on people, excessive barking, and reactivity/aggression. It is rewarding to see how much these dogs have progressed in such a short period of time.

Here are some recent graduates of our Day Training program. Did you notice there are some small breed dogs that came through our program? Yes, small breed dogs need training as much as the large breed dogs. I'll let you in on something commonly known in the dog training community. The training is more about changing the behaviors of the owners than it is the dog. The dogs learn the new rules quickly. Getting the owners to consistently enforce the rules is a little more challenging.

Things I would never do based on my experience as a dog trainer.
1. Use a retractable leash.
2. Use a flat buckle collar or harness to take my dog for a walk.
3. Take my dog to a dog park.
4. Let my dog approach a strange dog.
5. Let my dog approach strangers.
6. Let my dog off leash in public places without having atleast an e-collar on the dog.
7. Let my dog walk ahead of me while on a walk.
8. Let my dog focus on people or other dogs while on a walk.
9. Let my dog bark more than a few times before correcting the dog.
10. Let strangers approach my dog if my dog gets excited or reactive around strangers.
11. Treat my dog like a baby, it is a dog, they need consistent structure to thrive.
12. Let my dog put teeth on me, even playful biting.

Success stories
Hazel came out of control, the owners were afraid, with very good cause. She lunged and bit me because I wouldn't let her run all over, jumping on me, the door and window. Mom and dad muzzle conditioned her, so we could work with her, safely. What we are finding is that Hazel is a very sweet girl, but very stubborn. When she stopped getting her way, using her teeth and she realized that doing crazy things like sitting when we said to, walking next to us, holding place, weren't so terrible, she starting being more compliant. She is still a work in progress, but she takes corrections without getting so angry and that makes live with her soooo much better.

Here are some recent graduates of our Day Training program. One of the most rewarding parts of training dogs is seeing the humans understand their role in the pack, and the dog understanding their role as well. When there is a clear understanding, the relationship becomes so much stronger.
