Day 5 Mission Rabies. Last day!

Day 5 was spent trying to wrap up areas that weren't finished. We started at the same densely packed community along the river. The further north we went, the more the population changed into mostly Vietnamese. Most didn't have dogs, and those who did were far less enthusiastic about us being there, so we didn't vaccinate many. That said, we had another kid guiding us around going to all the doors. We went places that were definitely off the beaten path that we would have never found without his help. The other bad part of this part of the day....the smell. It was directly behind a fish distributor, so there were fish being processed and lots of rotting fish. The smell was horrendous at times.

Luckily, we got out of there pretty quickly and moved onto the next area to help another team finish up. There was another large Buddhist Pagoda with lots of dogs. A monk came out and shook my hand and welcomed us. We vaccinated the few we could catch, and then we were led to the back of the property where a small apartment building stood. Inside, we were greeted by a family with 3 Pomeranians of all things! These were well-kept, family pets just like you'd see back home.

Once we finished that section, we were off to another area where we met an older lady who took us through her entire neighborhood to every dog. She was very excited to help.

Most dogs this week had some level of skin disease, mostly mange, fleas, and ticks. One dog I saw today was nearly hairless, not because it was supposed to be, but because of the severe disease. I also saw two dogs army crawling on their front legs because their back ends were paralyzed. And a few dogs this week with large transmissible venereal tumors, something I've never seen back home. This, along with living conditions in many areas, was the hardest part of the trip.

We finished up last night and went to dinner. At dinner, Luke Gamble, the founder of Mission Rabies, spoke to us, and some numbers were shared. 800 volunteers over 2 weeks, 700 of whom were Cambodians, and international volunteers from 30 different countries. One important note...you don't have to be a vet or even have an animal health background to volunteer, so if you're interested, go for it!

Over the course of these two weeks, in three different provinces, we vaccinated over 227,000 dogs. Our region came in over 70% of all dogs vaccinated, which is the threshold to fully eliminate rabies. Anybody can pack a cooler full of vaccines and go door to door, but being able to scale it to this magnitude is an extremely impressive feat.

I've really enjoyed my time here and meeting so many amazing people, seeing the country, and being able to be a small part of it. Thanks to everyone who followed along my journey!

Mission Rabies day 4! Today was the best day so far. When they assigned our territories, I had a very small, skinny area next to the river. I thought that based on the size we would be done in a couple of hours, but it was the most condensed area I've seen. Loads of people live on the river. We vaccinated nearly 150 dogs and barely got halfway through. Wall to wall houses and wall to wall people.

We started the day meeting a village chief. My student got so excited and wanted to take a selfie with him, so I assume he's someone important in the area. We came to an area with two litters of puppies and 5 adult dogs, and the locals told us no. Then the chief said something, and we vaccinated all of them!

In the next area, it was like an event. The two boys in the picture were the kings of their village. They took us around and showed us every dog in their village. At one point, we were walking down this narrow trail in between two buildings and into a dark building, and I was starting to question why we were trusting these two kids. Then it opened up to a small house with several dogs in it. We would have never found them without these two. Then, once I took a picture with them, the rest of the kids literally ran down the alleyway to take another!

The last stop of the day, we became quite the show. Lots of people gathered around watching, and everyone brought their dogs to us. We barely had to move as local after local carried their dogs to us. Surprise of the day was seeing a French Bulldog.

One thing I haven't mentioned is the weather. Day 1 it rained, so it wasn't too hot, but the last two days, the temperature was in the mid-90s. Yesterday's heat index was 109. Today was a cool front at 90 degrees and only 105 heat index. Needless to say, be glad you can't experience smells through the internet.

A couple of random photos... Kansas American Academy. I have no idea what it is, but I had to take a pic. Really cool pattern and color on this dog and a random snake.

One more day of vaccinating dogs!

Day 3 update. Very productive day today, with my student and I vaccinating 110 dogs and 1 cat. Started out in the rural countryside and then a poor part of the city.

One of the highlights of today was simply giving 5s and fist bumps to a group of kids who were probably 5 to 8 years old. I'm probably one of the only white men they've seen, so nearly all younger kids stare. Most smile, some wave and laugh. One kid today asked me to vaccinate his arm next!

I only took a couple of photos today. The first just shows the area we started the day. The video is pretty self-explanatory (in the comments). Lastly, I previously worked for a company headquartered out of Saratoga Springs, NY, and have visited there dozens of times, so I had to ask this guy to take his picture.

No bites, some more urine, and probably picked up mange today. Here's to my ivermectin appetizer!

Day 2 Mission Rabies was an amazing day. Started in the city to finish our area from yesterday, then by 11am we were in a more rural part of the city. Far different environment and feel. Everyone is so nice and appreciative. The lady holding her dog up had 5 dogs and ran a coffee shop. She fixed the 3 of us coffee to show her gratitude.

Vaccinated over 100 dogs today. A few people on our trip have already been bitten and had to receive post exposure prophylactic rabies treatment. The worst I've got is peed on.

Communication with the student was better today as we've settled into a system.

I ate lunch today at a Buddhist Monastery, which was surreal, especially after visiting the killing fields museum a couple of days ago.
