Dogs have feelings just like we do. If they have feelings about a certain thing or situation, ignoring their limitations destroys your relationship by breaking down your trust account. This can lead to other behavioral issues.

Its best to respect their limitations by learning how to help them cope and if this means you don’t go certain places with you pup or you can’t bring her to the dog park or any number of things, then please don’t force the issue because it’s what you want or it’s convenient for you. Trust is all you’ve got. Don’t jeopardize that.

Fear is the easiest things to condition in dogs and the hardest to resolve. Fear can come from many places, many of which we don't control. This infographic is my most downloaded and shared resource. In fact, many vets and Veterinary Behaviorists use this handout with their own clients! Link in first comment to grab your own copy.

Mantra time..."What is rewarded is repeated"✅
This is a simple and powerful message. 🏋️‍♀️
A few things to remember with this though and your timing needs to be clear too.
If you can be more precise when you reward behaviour you want to be repeated, you are making things SO much easier for your dog to understand.
Sometimes people see something they really like from their dog and they stand up, go to the cupboard to get their favourite reward, open the cupboard, get the packet out and the time to reward has long gone.
Have a few rewards on you at all times.✅
It isn't hard to do.
Pop them in a pocket (yes you will curse me on laundry day🙂), but you can make a real difference in your dogs behaviour just by rewarding exactly what you like when they show you.
I am not talking about a sit or a down but all the other times you notice your dog has done well.
They didn't bark at the cat as it ran over the grass YES! Rewardable✅
They chose just to relax on their bed or mat YES! Rewardable✅
They kept all four paws on the ground when your guest arrived YES! Rewardable✅

If you haven't tried rewarding exactly what you want....take up the challenge and try it for 2 weeks.
I promise you, you will see results...but you will probably still curse me on laundry day🙂

WHAT THE F?

Recognising stress responses in dogs.

Fight or flight are well known reactions to fear or stress, but these other “F” words are also important to understand and be aware of as they may not always be so obvious.

Freeze, Fawn, Fidget or Fool around are also responses to stress or fear and are also commonly seen in people.

Some dogs may have a genetic predisposition to one type of response while some react based on previous experience - what has worked for them before or what hasn’t. Some dogs have different reactions depending on the specific context.

Recognising and taking note of situations or circumstances where these responses are seen is important in understanding how our dogs are feeling.

When we recognise a fear or a stress response, we are able to intervene and advocate for our dogs.

For those unaware of Mr M's case (now known as Midnite), read on and sign the petition:

*The hearing in Midnite's abuse case will be July 29th in the Litchfield Judicial Court, 50 Field St., Torrington, CT. Please assemble at 9:45. Court opens at 10.*
-------------------------------------------
Sometimes bad things happen to an adopted greyhound. Even though we do our due diligence with home visits, reference checks and follow ups, bad things happened to Midnite. The animal abuse case is being tried by the State of CT. Not only is there a state prosecutor assigned to the case, GRR has retained an animal advocate attorney. Midnite is now 10 years old and for 6 months before he was found on the road, he had been severely neglected to the point of abuse. He was a strong, happy 76lb male at 3 yrs old when he went to his forever home. When animal control took him in, he was 44lbs with badly infected pressure sores on his hip bones, barely able to walk. He had only been loose a matter of hours before being picked up. We couldn’t identify him immediately as a GRR dog because his ear tattoos were illegible but with the help of WAG, who took him in, we figured out who he was. He’s being held as state evidence in a foster home. The animal control investigator did a wonderful job over 3 weeks while Midnite was in foster care documenting his weight gain and overall physical improvement. His adopters, the people who were supposed to love and care for him, were arrested on 25k bond each. That should tell you how severe the case is. The pictures are disturbing.

We hope everyone has a FANTASTIC and SAFE holiday! We will be closing today at 4pm, and will reopen on Friday, July 5th for regular business hours.

If you have a pet that you know is afraid of fireworks and thunderstorms, please be gentle with them. We've posted quite a bit about how to help your dog through noises, so give those options a go!

Absolutely agree. COMFORT your dog. If you remain calm, this will help your dog to remain calm. Be with them in their safe place, use the tv or radio as a way to help drown out the scary noises, have a light on to avoid any flashing outside, and just BE there for your pet. You do not have to allow them to get up in your face or lap (especially if you have a big dog), but you can offer warm pats and strokes, and soft words as they lay on the floor beside you while you're in your couch or chair. If you can sit on the floor with them, they'd probably appreciate it. You can also try playing games to distract them.

Never "punish" them for their fear. Try to help them work through it.

This is one that needs to be put to bed once and for all. It pains me to think of all the dogs who suffer unnecessarily because of the prevalence of this myth.

If you are afraid of something and someone hugs you and comforts you with gentle words, does that make you more afraid? Of course not. It helps calm you and makes you feel better.

So, let's keep this in mind as the US heads into the holiday and all the scary booms.

COMFORT YOUR DOG.
COMFORT YOUR DOG.
COMFORT YOUR DOG.
COMFORT YOUR DOG.
COMFORT YOUR DOG.

Stay safe.

Cannot be shared enough.

We have had an increase in lost dogs in the last couple weeks due to storms and fireworks. So we are asking all residence to make sure that your dogs have their collars on with their license and rabies tag on them. This would make it easier for us to just bring your dog right back home to you. Happy Independence Day from the Southbury Animal Control.
