Animal Orphanage (Old Town, Maine)

Animal Orphanage (Old Town, Maine) We are a no-kill animal orphanage admitting stray cats and dogs through police or animal control.

In 1990, a dedicated group of Old Town/Orono citizens, concerned about the well-being of homeless cats and dogs in their communities, founded The Animal Orphanage. Thousands of lost or abandoned animals have found food, shelter, medical treatment and the comfort of a caring staff at the Orphanage over the years. Every effort is made to reunite the animal with its loving owners or arrange adoption into a new home.

Lyric Has Been Adopted! 🎉

We are thrilled to announce that Lyric, our 4-year-old Shepherd/Husky mix with a big personality, has found his forever home! 🏡✨

Lyric came to us with some challenges, including medical concerns that needed immediate attention. With time, care, and patience, he made a full recovery. While in the shelter, the stress of kennel life caused some behavioral challenges, but we weren’t about to give up on him.

Thanks to the dedication of our staff and the incredible support of Christine, a trainer who has worked wonders with some of our dogs, Lyric underwent weeks of training to build confidence, learn new skills, and cope with his stress. He made remarkable progress and was ready to thrive in a home that could provide him with structure, understanding, and lots of love.

Now, Lyric has found his perfect match—a family committed to continuing his training and giving him the life he deserves. We’re so proud of how far he’s come and can’t wait to see him shine in his new home. 🐾

Thank you to everyone who supported Lyric's journey. Your encouragement made this happy ending possible. 💕

Happy tails, Lyric! 🐕🎉

After 233 days -- Caesar has found his forever home! 🐾❤️

When Caesar first arrived as a stray, he didn’t trust humans and wanted nothing to do with us. He was nervous, untrusting, and kept his distance. But over time, this spirited boy began to show his true colors. Over the last few months, Caesar blossomed into a happy, friendly, and playful cat. He even became a bit of a star, attending cat yoga sessions and charming everyone with his antics.

Caesar was also quite the jokester. He loved to bother the staff while they worked, swatting at their legs, zooming around the shelter, and occasionally knocking things over just for fun. Despite his mischievous side, his personality made him impossible not to love.

Known as the "ladies’ man" of the shelter, Caesar got along well with kittens and female cats but liked to remind the male cats who was boss. He adored exploring, playing with toys, and getting attention on his own terms.

While we’ll miss his spirited presence and playful mischief, we’re overjoyed to announce that Caesar has been adopted! His journey from a scared stray to a confident, loving companion is a beautiful reminder of the power of patience and love. Cheers to Caesar and his new forever family! Pictured below are photos of Caesar already settling into his new home!

🌟 Today’s Kennel Sponsorship Shout-Out: Alfred & Esther Bushway! 🌟

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Alfred & Esther, for your incredible generosity! Your sponsorship is truly life-changing for one very special girl—Cotija. 💕
Because of your kindness, Cotija receives not only the essentials like nourishing food and regular health checks but also the little extras that make all the difference: engaging toys, positive human interactions to help her shine, and, most importantly, the patience and care she needs to thrive here at the shelter.

🐾 Meet Cotija! 🐾
This 3-year-old sweetheart came to us extremely nervous and unsure of her surroundings. At first, she kept to herself, but with time, patience, and love, she’s slowly starting to come out of her shell. Cotija has even begun showing curiosity and playfulness toward the other cats, a heartwarming sign of her growing confidence. She’ll do best in a calm, understanding home where she can continue to feel safe and loved. With the right support, we know Cotija will blossom into an amazing companion.

The first photo of Cotija was taken today, capturing her newfound comfort and growing confidence in the shelter environment. In contrast, the last photo, taken just a few months ago, shows how frightened and unsure she once was. The progress she’s made is truly heartwarming—she’s slowly but surely coming out of her shell, and we couldn’t be prouder of her journey. We can only imagine how much more she’ll blossom when she finds the loving forever home she deserves. 💕
