There is nothing that seems to excite reef-science institutions more than dead coral. It is a great chance to claim the GBR is doomed - and imply you better stop driving your car which is causing climate change. Today, the Australian Institute of Marine Science made the very unusual step of releasing an interim report on the GBR – normally they release the result of their year-long survey in the middle of the year. But they just finished measuring the coral in the Cairns and Cooktown/Lizard sectors and found a major coral loss. They could not wait to tell the world.

And yes, the coral cover has dropped – but from RECORD-HIGH levels. Funnily they never mentioned that in their press release or even showed this graph that I found buried in their data-hub. Why do they appear to bury that inconvenient fact?

Yes, the Cairns and Cooktown Lizard sectors lost quite a bit of coral, and much of that was from bleaching (but also from cyclones). But why don’t they mention that the coral reached record-high amounts after the similarly supposedly catastrophic bleaching events in 2016/17/20/22. Maybe those events were non-events. But at least they are finally happy they measured some dead coral.

This new data continues to demonstrate two things. First, the GBR goes through major cycles of coral loss followed by coral growth. It has always happened and always will. And second – science institutions are far too enthusiastic about claiming the coral loss is a disaster, but not acknowledging that massive swings are the rule rather than the exception, and that the regrowth demonstrates that the system is healthy and vigorous.

Even with this drop in coral cover for these two (out of 11) sectors, the aggregate for the 2025 report will very likely show only a modest reduction from record-high amounts of coral for the entire reef. And when you are at record-highs for the entire GBR, for three years, you have to bet on a fall very soon.

Time to Make Science Reliable Again. We need to audit our science institutions.

This is all fish both available and currently in "QT".

Our "QT" consists of 1 to 2 weeks (depending upon Species) of resting, being well-fed, and exposure to prophylactic medications & procedures.

It is very much recommended that a functional hospital system be maintained in which a 30-60 day isolation is performed before any specimen is added to your display aquarium. TRUST NO ONE.

"QT" is emptied of ready-to-purchase specimens every Friday evening after the shop closes.

Saturday is the best day for fish variety.
Prices are not given out via this page or PM.
Please call the shop or stop by, to have your questions answered.
