ATTENTION: PLEASE SHARE TO FRIENDS, FAMILY, SOCIAL MEDIAS, ETC. HELP IS NEEDED ASAP!

Aloha,

We urgently need your testimony to assist in reopening
the Hawaii aquarium fishery. As you may know the Hawaiian aquarium fishery has been shut down due to a court order requiring an environmental review.
The court requirements have been satisfied and the State is moving forward in the permitting process to reopen the fishery. The final decision making meeting regarding issuance of permits is August 23. We really need your support and encourage you to submit testimony by email asking for the reopening of the fishery. You can read DAR(Division of Aquatic Resources) submittal here
https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/F-1-1.pdf

We need your assistance, NOW!

The email address is [email protected]

In the subject line include “agenda item F1 SUPPORT”

In the body of the email, “ I SUPPORT OPENING THE AQUARIUM FISHERY AND MANAGING RESOURCES BY SCIENCE PROVIDED BY DAR”

Sign your name

You can elaborate as much as you like, but be clear in your position in the first sentence.

Mahalo for your support,

Corals are effectively thermometers that record the temperature of the water in which they live. The ratio of various elements in the calcium carbonate skeleton can be used to work out that temperature. Drill a hole in a particularly large coral and you can work out the temperature. This new paper published in Nature shows that the GBR was just as hot a couple of centuries ago.

The paper showed other data from the Coral Sea and Melanesia which indicates that it is now hotter than in the last few hundred years – and of course all the headlines are about that.

But this data shows that there is nothing unusual about the water temperature on the GBR.

And let’s not forget that the water temperature on the GBR is a few degrees less than in the waters of the Coral Triangle’ (PNG Indonesia etc) where the corals are even more diverse and grow much faster. And all the bleaching events in the last few years have left us with record amounts of coral.

Our system now has a track... the NHC has designated the tropical wave as PTC 4. The track shows a tropical storm somewhere along our coast by Sunday morning. Tropical Storm Warnings and Watches are now in effect. I'll post that map next.

For those who haven't got the word yet.

Sadly, inevitable. The average "hobbyist"'s values have drastically changed over the years. What MASNA/MACNA excelled at, education and social interaction, are now more readily and cheaply procured elsewhere. For better or worse, the "shows" have evolved into consumer events for primarily livestock, ie frags. Gone are the days of excitingly waiting in line for the next lecture from an "old salt" dishing out wisdom to begin. Instead, we've chosen ridiculous names, blue light saturation, and the occasion smoke machine with go-go dancers. Combined with sh*tty economic times, IMO this show was never going to succeed.

The Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA) deeply regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2024 Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA), originally slated for August 30th to September 1st at the Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Passed on the NP for the moment. However, a couple of these arrived today.

UPDATE: GONE!!

FREE used RedSea aquarium with overflow approximately 35.5"L x19.5Wx21”H (~58g) with original white stand. If I recall correctly this is a first-generation tank & stand. Water tested today and neither the tank nor sump leaks BUT there is a small not very noticeable chip in one of the tank's bottom corners. The stand requires TLC and the plumbing kit needs repair/replacement.
