PSA regarding our pets and wildlife populations‼️

Our domestic pets can have many negative effects on native animals. Especially our beloved dogs and cats. Our wildlife populations are decreasing and our pets play a role in it. Our pets hunt and kill native animals. Some of which are food/resources for others. Our pets spread parasites, harmful bacteria, and disease to wildlife through their waste. Pet waste can also contaminate water causing algae blooms that harm aquatic life. Our pets cause stress in wildlife populations, which can lead to habitat displacement, decreased reproduction, and overall health of native animals.

Since 1970 wildlife populations have decreased by a staggering 73%. Our wildlife populations are important. They play crucial roles in keeping the ecosystems around us healthy. Our ecosystems being healthy is essential to our survival by giving us clean air, water, regulating our climate, pollinating our crops, controlling pest populations, and granting us other resources including but not limited to food and medicine. The decrease in wildlife populations and loss of biodiversity can disrupt our ecosystem’s functions which significantly impact the health of our planet.

In order to help our wildlife populations thrive, we need to ensure our pets are supervised when outside and under our control, keep cats indoors or in their enclosed catios/porches, always clean up after them to the best of our ability, and avoid disturbing nesting areas and all the wildlife that cross our path.
