Jeremy Steinberg – Rider Position, a Lost Cause? Posted on February 14, 2024February 14, 2024 by horsemagazine I was teasing one of my riders last weekend, asking her about the wording of the rules of a canter pirouette, which she didn’t know, but was showing PSG none-the-less. I gave her a hard...

A visual for today. Illustrated by the amazing Susan DiFelice.

The connection the rider has through their arms, hands and reins, needs to flow to the horse’s mouth and through the horse’s body in what we call the “circle of the aids” or a “recycling” of energy.

When the rider has flat or “piano” hands, they have effectively turned off the flow of connection. To keep that energy flowing in a harmonious way through your forearms and into your seat and back (which is where you can most influence the horse) you must keep your fists softly closed with the thumb on top.

Think of a water pipe, with an on off valve. The valve is ON or OPEN when your fist is upright and elbows by your side. The valve is shut off or CLOSED when you ride with flat hands.

We want the horse’s energy to flow through us, so we must keep all the “pipes” open!!

Kyra Kyrklund is not only very wise, she is very funny: "In front of the leg is a bit hard to explain. It’s a bit like God – everyone has heard of him, but no one has seen him. It is hard to explain the feeling of ‘in front of the leg’ but when it happens, it’s like magic. It is a bit like explaining how strawberry jam tastes – it is easier if you have eaten it before or even tasted a strawberry. It is the same with the good feelings you get when you are riding: think about that feeling, give it a name, then it will be easier to get it back..." enjoy the entire article https://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/2020/12/kyra-kyrklund-the-young-horse-the-first-step/

The Cavalry Manual tells us: As the straightness improves, the throughness of the horse will improve as well. The pushing capacity of the hindquarters can now go its way through the horse up to the mouth and makes the horse give to the pressure of the bit, bend the neck and chew on the bit. This is the natural way the horse achieves the correct “going through the poll”. It would not be correct to achieve this “going through the poll” by brutally pulling neck and head of the horse. Instead it must be the result of the hind legs pushing towards the quiet still hand. Our Story

Lessons, Training, Boarding.

Lessons & Training with a 2018 USDF Bronze Medalist. 41 years of experience riding horses, 14 years of it as a “full-time professional”. My first 15 years of experience began in Saddleseat, hunt seat & western.

In my 20’s I began to learn dressage...and discovered how much I enjoyed the challenge. I still continue to do other disciplines, but use dressage as a basis for all of them. I currently have 5 horses I train ranging in experience from Training Level to schooling Prix St Georges. 3 of them also jump and they all enjoy field trips to the park.

We have lesson horses available. Beginner safe as well as some that are farther along in training for the more advanced riders. I am insured and will travel.
