Video forthcoming, but I built a new chick brooder, and it's so convenient! It has an automatic waterer (with an extra water dish for bonus electrolyte water). It has wheels so it can be moved easily. It's insulated to save power while keeping the chicks warm. And there's a removable plug in the floor so all of the shavings can easily be swept into a trash can. 10/10, would recommend this design to a friend.

Did you know you can freeze the "unusable" parts of veggies to throw in a stock later? We have celery ends, onion roots, pepper tops, tomato cores, etc. that we boiled with chicken bones today to make the most amazing stock. (We generally don't eat meat, but we just made freezer meals for a friend who is having a baby this week, so we used a whole chicken. We couldn't let the leftover bones go unused, so we had to make bone broth from them. Bring on the Phở!) Once we finish cooking this broth, we will strain it and compost these veggies.

Our usual morning visitor. We call her Dierdra and she is not our favorite customer since she's the reason we had to build such a giant fence. Don't worry, she still has plenty outside of the fence to nibble on.

Our fave way to make tortilla soup is to roast a squash in the oven (any kind of squash will do) and then immersion blend it into the soup broth before adding any other ingredients. Squash is a great soup pallet since it takes on the flavor of the spices. It adds fiber and thickens the soup naturally.

This pink variegated sage is still alive in January, (and providing a snack for local insects by the looks of it). We love the pink and purple hues and it tastes great. It's more mild than traditional sage, so it's particularly great in French recipes that call for delicate flavor.
