On August 8, 2023, we received an anonymous report of alleged cockfighting in unincorporated Thurston County. On August 12, our field team and Deputy Burton-Crow of TCSO completed a welfare check and observed over 60 chickens, 40 of which were tethered to A-frame enclosures or blue barrels. We noticed that the waddles and combs of the observed tethered roosters had been altered. Persons involved in cockfighting will often cut or "dub" the combs, ears, and waddles of trained roosters to prevent a significant bleed and allow the fight to last longer. The rooster's spur will often be cut and dulled to allow for gaff attachments, or the natural spur may be sharpened if the fighters opt not to use attachments.
On August 19, JAS and Deputy Burton-Crow served a search and seize warrant, seizing the 63 chickens. The JAS team cared for these animals for a month while we awaited the court's decision on their placement. Thanks to our partnership with Rooster Haus Rescue, a non-profit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing permanent sanctuary to neglected and abused farmed animals, we could ensure positive outcomes for these birds despite their original circumstances. On August 8, 2024, the individual pled guilty and was convicted of one count of a class C felony for animal fighting and one count of animal cruelty in a class B felony for mutilation. He was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution and serve a 42-day home probation sentence. JAS is committed to continuing to investigate acts of cruelty and neglect throughout our partner jurisdictions in Thurston County.

We have several distinguished gentlemen looking for their flock of ladies to care for or to join their very own bachelor flock! Viscount of Hansometown, Cluck Norris, and Prince Featherington. Roosters often have a bad reputation, but they are actually quite gallant when it comes to interacting with their flock and others.
- Roosters make sure their hens eat before they do. 🥹
- A rooster protects his flock and will warn the other chickens if he senses danger.
- A hen may choose to mate with a rooster if she finds his comb attractive!
- Roosters are one of the most discarded animals on the farm!
- They make great pets!

They come spayed/neutered, microchipped, first set of vaccines including DAPP (parvo combo), Bordatella (kennel cough), and Strongid (wormer).
Dooey is a very loving boy that has been very much enjoying a break from the kennels and hanging out in one of our offices here at the shelter.
