I am appalled by Pet Partners' most-recent PR effort: "I'm just here to hold the leash." This message undermines the professionalism that many talented and dedicated individuals and organizations have worked for so diligently over the past 40+ years. Such glib advertising denies the crucial animal-welfare role handlers play in supporting their therapy animals. It contradicts the competencies purportedly supported by the Pet Partners organization. Such inconsistent messaging is a dismal warning of caution to all who deal with Pet Partners: do their handlers really know what they are doing? Or are they merely holding the leash?

Join me this Thursday, April 6, at noon Pacific Time for my webinar on Assessing Handlers for Competence. Presented through the APA's Human-Animal Interactions Section, but you do not have to be a member to attend. Here's a brief synopsis:
Most AAI assessments currently in use identify necessary skills for the animal to demonstrate but neglect to assess handler skills or how handlers apply their skills within the context of individual AAI environments. This deficiency leaves facility staff without critical knowledge of fit between the animal-handler team and the specific facility and client population. This webinar explains the concept of competency assessment, provides sample handler and animal competencies, asks learners to either apply those competencies to their setting or identify different competencies needed in their setting, and demonstrates how competency-based assessment protects animal well-being. This webinar is based on the book, Assessing Handlers for Competence in Animal-Assisted Interventions.
