February 20th marks national "Love Your Pet Day" - a special day for extra pampering for our pets still with us, or to remember the love and memory of a dear pet that has passed. Take a few extra moments to reflect on the incredible bond we share with our animal companions, and the love they give us in return. ❤️

Grieving the loss of a pet is a deeply personal and individualized experience. Grief is an expression of the love we felt and bond we shared with them. Our pets will forever have a place in our hearts, and it is important to take the time to grieve. Reflecting on the beautiful life you shared with your dear pet by journaling, sharing stories of them with friends and family, or other forms of expression can bring comfort during a heartbreaking time.

We are often asked how should a family prepare for an in-home visit, and where the visit should take place. Preparing a cozy place where you and your pet are most comfortable can help you both feel at peace. This could be the living room, bedroom, or a sunny spot in another favorite room. Some families may choose to light a candle or have soft music playing. Our first priority is for this experience to be as peaceful as possible for you and your pet.

When we talk with families, we often hear about bucket lists, which can be a great way to have wonderful memories with your dog, and to spoil them and let them enjoy all the things they love.

While it’s easy to come up with things that you want to do with your dog, the question to ask yourself is: What would THEY enjoy? Tailor the list to things that will be fun for them, taking into consideration their current health and comfort. While some dogs may enjoy road trips, others may be feeling a bit crummy or nauseous, or it simply may not be their vibe. For those dogs, maybe a visit with a friend or some quiet cuddles may be more their speed.

Here are some bucket list items that owners have shared with us:

Going to the beach, mountains, or cabin
Getting a treat at a drive thru window
A trip to the grandparents’ for a barbeque
Breakfast in bed
Dog park!
Getting a doggie massage
Playing frisbee or fetch
Going squirrel watching
A steak dinner
Picking out a toy at the pet store together
Road trip!
Cuddling together
Playing in the sprinklers
Doggie play date
A picnic together

As with all bucket lists, the best way to live one out is to do it before your pet gets ill. And if that doesn’t happen – life gets busy, we know – make sure the list is about your pet and what they want do, in their current state.

"To anyone who has ever been owned by a cat, it will come as no surprise that there are all sorts of things about your cat you will never, as long as you live, forget. Not the least of these is your first sight of him or her."
