Ivy is a 5 y.o. Dachshund that was having difficulty walking. She was seen by the neurologist at VCA Midwest Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center, Dr. Donaldson. She was diagnosed with cervical, mid-back, and low-back disc herniations (also known as IVDD).
Along with the veterinary medical treatment provided at VCA Midwest, she was recommended Physical Therapy. Thus far we have utilized medical massage, strength training, as well as balance and coordination exercises to help her move easier. Her pet parents feel she has improved significantly since starting PT. They report she is moving more often throughout the day, her movement is more coordinated, and she is even chasing after rabbits - which she had not done since they adopted her!
We are so proud of the hard work they are putting in. Keep it up Ivy!

Charlie is a 10 yo Labrador Retriever who was referred to PT because he was slowing down and having trouble getting up during the day.
His pet parent noticed his walking became unstable and he seemed stiff all around. He was evaluated by orthopedic specialists at Sirius Veterinary Orthopedic Center who recommended PT to reduce his pain and stiffness.
The video on the left is Charlie before PT. Notice his wide base of support, his right leg swinging out to the side, and the difficulty he has walking in a straight line.
The video on the right is Charlie after 8 sessions of PT. Not only is Charlie in less pain and moving better throughout the day, he is even running to get the morning newspaper! Charlie’s pet parent said it had been 8 months since he had seen Charlie run.
Charlie is a great example of successful senior aging. Managing arthritic pain, improving flexibility, and rebuilding muscle strength are key factors to staying healthy and fit well into the senior years!
Great job Charlie!

Look at Otis go! 💪🏻
In November of last year Otis suffered a spinal cord injury (IVDD/disc herniation) that made it very difficult for him to walk.
He’s come a long way from dragging his back legs to navigating this challenging obstacle course. He just keeps getting better and we love it!
Go Otis!

Look at Baxter go! He is navigating this obstacle course to improve his balance and coordination. He has worked so hard in PT over these last few months. We are very impressed by his tenacity!
The only thing he was missing today was his DogGurt during his massage! Next time!

☘️Meet Talledega, a sweet 1.5 year old brindled Whippet. She is struggling with bearing weight in her front limb, along with pain and weakness, after an injury that occurred at the dog park. She wants to be able to play with other dogs again, not be in pain, and run like Whippets are born to do (up to 35 mph!). Let’s hear it for Tally!!!🐾🐶☘️
