Dog trainers don’t possess any magic. What they do possess, if they’re good at their craft, is a highly developed set of skills. But remember, at one point they knew very little, and likely got into this line of work because they were struggling with their own dogs.

So what’s different between a skilled and knowledgeable dog trainer and a struggling owner? Yep, you guessed it, skills and knowledge.

These people that you now hire for help were once struggling much like yourself. What did they do? They developed within themselves—likely with the help of another dog trainer—what was necessary to be able to solve their problems, and now, with all that ability, they help others with theirs’.

But, and this is a big but, all they can do is help. They can share information, teach skills, coach, and root you on—but only you can put in the work to take what is being shared and make it something personal, integrated, and useful.

You don’t have to become a dog trainer, but you do have to become a skilled, and knowledgeable owner—to whatever extent needed to match your goals.

Otherwise you’ll have to settle for watching your dog “magically” excel with your trainer, and “mysteriously” deteriorate with you.

Was just reminded of the true lifesaving importance of a distance down and stay. Zee and I were playing some early fetch with his glow ball and it bounced off him into the street. I let him go after it since there are almost no cars at this time. He got the ball and was across the street when a van pulled out of the alley just as I was about to recall, I gave a firm down and he downed and stayed as the van passed in-between us. Had he only has a recall he would have run in front of the van and likely have been hit. NEVER stop training! When your dog can sit stay down or any other basics add distance! A little at a time ask your dog to do known commans at a short distance and then further and further. Practice this in a safe and calm environment and slowly add distraction as you add distance and if you can "mock up" real world scenarios you could face. Always be prepared. Never hurt to have it and not need it but you'll wish you'd done it when you need it in real life!!! Cujo took such good care of me at the hospital during my stroke like episode! And Venom hit the alert that something was wrong as did Zee. My boys saved my life. Thanks to Scott and Maria both for taking care of me and the kids in this scary time 🥰🤧

It's been an amazing year working with Venom and training him we have now finally decided on his permanent placement and he will now be going to be a working service dog with in early September. We are so proud of how he has grown and are so glad he will be going to make a difference for his new handler giving her the the partner she needs.
