Seger Fortibus German Shepherds C-Litter, Red boy, “Challenger”

Born 9/3/21, located in Omaha, NE area.

06/10/2024

Seger, who is from our C-Litter, has been returned to us and is looking for his forever home.

Seger is a sweet affectionate boy who enjoys people, playing ball, going for walks, going bye-bye, visiting stores, treats, and attention. He would be a super sweet addition to a wonderful family’s home & hearts.

*History on Seger:

•Born September 3, 2021
•Placed in first home at 8 weeks old
•3 months later he was returned to me by first family because they did not have time for him.
•In the three months they had him he literally never left the house. Was never even taken to the vet so truly zero car rides, zero classes, zero experiences, zero socialization, zero exposure, zero training.
•I had him for the next two months (from 5 months old to 7 months old)….
•During this two month window Seger spent a month of it at a Puppy Board & Train Program to help catch him up on everything he missed. And a month with me where I applied my tools & resources of owning a PetSitting business with Daycare to do similar training and work with Seger.
•At 7 months old Seger was placed with his new adoptive family, and spent the next two years with them.
•This family was wonderful, but they had two existing chihuahuas in the household who severely struggled with a Big Puppy Presence joining the family.
•The situation never improved with the chihuahuas as Seger grew-up, and it was decided to bring Seger back to me.

I have had Seger back since May 11, 2024. He has melded back into the family very well and the family routine. He is great with our little French Bulldog so I do not feel small dogs are the issue but more a personality conflict with that particular chihuahua. Seger does great with both our cats. He is out free in the yard with all the girls, and inside the house he lives directly next to three intact males with just a short simple expen separating them. All boys do very well living in close neighboring proximity of eachother. They can literally touch noses and exchange kisses over the gates with eachother.

When Seger meets a new dog for the first time he… is…. Awkward 🤦🏼‍♀️ A-W-K-W-A-R-D. I would presume this has to do with the period of time between 8 weeks old and 5 months old when he never left the house and missed experiencing the world.

This is where “who Seger is introduced to”matters. He should not be put in with a bully or pushy dog, and he should not be put in with a dog who will “jump to conclusions” regarding Seger’s awkwardness. Seger needs to meet new dogs who are friendly, confident in themselves, and easy going kiddos.

When Seger is presented with a new dog he is insecure and uncomfortable. He does not want a confrontation but will react towards the other dog in an attempt to “get them before they get him”. For example, I had a friend over to the house for a few days with her dogs. When I was out of the room she allowed her dogs to enter the room Seger was in and approach him for the first time at the baby gate. They sniffed noses but then Seger didn’t know how to diffuse the situation or walk away so he reacted. He reared up & hopped at the gate while shaking his head & vocalizing. Which he immediately followed up with a retreat to his crate. He’s non-confrontational with a “fake confrontational facade” fueled by his insecurities. If I had taken the opportunity to properly introduce the two of them prior to this moment this situation probably would have played out differently, but ultimately it shows me he’s a big chicken trying to play it big while he is really running away to hide.

Seger is very good with meeting new people. When we took him to Lowe’s he went up to many people with wonderful ease looking for attention & pets. He’s also good with kids. His first family had kids and his second family had grandkids.

Seger is fantastically environmentally sound. He was very comfortable with all the environmental stimuli while we were at Lowe’s and while we ate dinner outside at Chick-Fil-a with the drive thru cars going by the outdoor eating area. While at Lowe’s a child even went running by and he didn’t even bat an eye or flick an ear. Rock Steady!!

Seger is a very sweet boy who wants to make good choices and does try to listen. He has done well with my guidance and direction. Seger would do well with a kind confident owner. Someone who will step in for him and let him know you have the situation under control for him (like with the dog-to-dog stuff) and he doesn’t need to worry because you got it taken care of for him.

•Below I will list out some of the information that is most relevant. Please feel free to share his info, or to reach out to me for any additional information. You can also follow him or share his info from his page: “Seger”.

•Basic Info:
⚫️ Age: 2 years old (DOB 9/03/21)
⚫️ Breed: German Shepherd
⚫️ Color: Sable
⚫️ Size: 80 lbs, estimated 26-27” at shoulder
⚫️ Health: Up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, up to date on heartworm prevention. No known health issues.
⚫️ Location: Omaha, Nebraska

•Pros/Cons:
🟢 Happy, goofy, comedic personality
🟢 Eager to learn, smart, biddable
🟢 Natural handler engagement
🟢 Social with people
🟢 Okay with older kids, probably 8-10+
🟢 Go-with-the flow, loves to play but can also just chill
🟢 Crate trained, potty trained, travels well
🟢 Basic on and off leash obedience training: come, sit, down, leash walking.
🟢 Reasonably cooperative with body handling, vet visits. No aggression.
🟢 Good around my cats
🟢 Good with my French Bulldog Puppy
🟢 Great food drive
🟢 Enjoys toy play
🟢 Listens when corrected
🟢 Very environmentally stable.

🟡 Dog social, awkward. He can be with other dogs. He’s just super awkward at meeting new dogs. So awkward. Once he’s established with those dogs he’s much smoother with them.
🟡 Communicative when wants something… (but be careful with this. I like when my dogs communicate with me but they can not be bossy or controlling about it. There’s a fine line).

🟠 Lacking manners - jumps on people when excited. But this seems to be more with me or my husband. He has never greeted a new person this way. It seems to be something he does to his familiar people.
🟠 Can have leash reactivity when walking by certain dogs, but corrects really well when told to stop.

•Seger’s Ideal Home:
🔵 Active family - walks, jogs, hiking, playtime AND/OR dog sports such as obedience, rally, agility, nose work, etc.
🔵 (Ideally) A home with no other boy dogs. Girls dogs are okay.
🔵 (Ideally) Has at least one social, stable, confident dog as a companion for him
🟣 Cats okay
🟣 Older kids okay
🟣 MAY be okay in an apartment, or without a fenced yard, depending on lifestyle
🟤 No anxious/reactive/aggressive dogs in the household.
🟤 No young kids. Not recommended for young couple planning on kids in the future.

So so happy for Seger (formally Challenger), so very happy for Mike & Elizabeth!!! Congratulations on your newest family member!! ❤️ This is a perfect match!! So excited for both you & Seger!!! **Absolutely LOVE the name by the way!!**

Thank you Danielle Stuber at Canine Initiative Training for spending the training time with this boy getting him ready for his new life & family. There is so much value in what you bring I don’t even know how to properly put words to it. Please know I sincerely treasure what you did for Seger to help him on his journey! He’s such a sweet lovely boy he truly deserves this opportunity. Thank you!!

Thank you Karen Belcher for referring this amazing family to Seger. He will live a very wonderful and loved life!!

•Also super cool sidenote: Mike & Elizabeth previously had a German Shepherd from Karen Belcher at Crooked Creek Ranch, her name was Kalea. It’s an Hawaiian name, so beautiful! The cool part is Kalea was a Great Aunt to Seger!! Love the family connection 😍🥰😘

Challenger’s first Farm and Fleet trip! He took everything in stride - people, kids, carts, little yapping dogs, all the new sights and sounds and smells! He got a little nervous of the flag flapping in the wind outside, and was momentarily hesitant the first time through the sliding doors, but not a bad first outing!

03/05/2022

Here’s a sped up clip of Challenger’s tether training the other day.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Only practice this with direct supervision. Some dogs, especially if they are new to being backtied/tethered, will tangle themselves up and could panic and injure themselves if someone is not there to help untangle them.

But with supervision, tethering is an excellent exercise that teaches the dog a number of valuable skills, including:

* Coping skills - how to deal with just being bored, without being constantly entertained by you
* Separation anxiety prevention - your dog learns that it’s okay to have distance between you - he doesn’t have to be underfoot just because you’re nearby
* Respect for the leash - the reality is that the average wall is a better dog trainer than most people. You rarely see a dog continue to strain and pull into their collar when the leash is tied to something secure. They test it a few times and go “oh, the wall doesn’t move” and then for the most part, stop pulling and start learning how to respect the end of the leash.
* Settling - most dogs will eventually just settle and hang out. Tethering teaches them how to regulate their energy level and settle at appropriate times
* Household manners, preventing bad behaviors - using a tether allows you to secure your dog where they will be unable to chew, jump, steal things, or any other number of household behaviors you may want to prevent, while allowing you to keep your hands free and get stuff done

I will generally tether a dog at least until they settle a little bit - whining, spinning, barking, etc. doesn’t get you released from the tether. I’ll tether a dog for up to an hour, maybe more if they’re experienced with it and very relaxed there, often less for dogs who are new to this.

Obviously, you also have to have something secure enough to be able to tie the dog back without the thing moving or breaking. In a home, I would typically use a sturdy doorknob to secure my leash around.

03/05/2022

Challenger learned about polite leash walking on a prong collar today.

Up until today, we used a harness for walks - on a harness, pulling is allowed and position doesn’t matter, so he could get out and walk without causing bad habits in a collar.

In addition to preventing bad habits by using a harness on walks, we have also been putting in some important foundation work:

In separate training sessions with less distractions, we introduced that a pop on a regular flat collar meant he was going to get a food reward. So while collar pops may still be “corrective” to some degree, the first association with it is a positive one, so that “corrections” down the road will help build focus and relationship rather than just suppressing behavior.

We’ve also worked on tethering. I use a leash tied to the wall and attached to his flat collar, and he just hangs out there. He learns that pulling into the collar is useless, because the wall isn’t going to move. He learns to respect the end of the leash.

Then we’ve applied that skill to me standing on the leash - same idea - the leash isn’t going to move, so just hang out and respect the amount of leash you’ve been given.

And yesterday, on our walk on the harness, we started introducing the skill of how to fix the leash if he walks on the opposite side of a pole or other object as I do.

Because of all of that foundation work, we were able to do a pretty quick prong collar introduction, and then head out and start teaching proper behavior when walking in a collar rather than a harness. I don’t see an issue with this guy transitioning back to a slip lead or regular flat collar in the future.

Here’s one clip from today - I’ll add a couple more in the comments, since I can only upload 1 video per post. Please excuse the bumpy camera work - it’s a little tricky to handle an inexperienced dog and video at the same time. 😅
