This summer has been a busy one and it’s only getting busier thanks to training clients, weddings, birthdays and more.

I have a few openings for new clients coming up and I’m reaching out to anyone who has messaged/emailed or texted me in the next couple of days to see if we can get something scheduled! Thank you to my former clients for recommending me and for trusting me to help not only your own dogs but your friend’s dogs too!

Kona here belongs to long time clients and friends. Her mom trained with me with her first dog many years ago and so did her mom! Kona is already a fantastic dog thanks to her mom remembering most of the skills she learned with her first dog but Kona was convinced that a ghost traveled with her from house to house haunting her in kitchens and bathrooms. Fear is a weird thing. With the help of some basic confidence building exercises and a patient mom Kona has been able to mostly overcome her fears and I’m confident will continue to make progress in the weeks to come.

It’s world veterinary day 🎉
This day is an opportunity to celebrate those special individuals who dedicate their lives to support pets and their family’s through every step of life.

I am always so grateful for Dr.Hord at Val Verde Animal Hospital for the support he has given my personal pets and fosters. Anya wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for him and his team.

I also want to take a moment to thank veterinarians supporting our community after the historic tornadoes that hit yesterday.

Southpaw Veterinary Clinic is providing free care to all pets impacted by the tornadoes and Westgate Animal Clinic had a community clinic for part of the day today.

The world is a better place thanks to some truly amazing veterinarians 🖤

**Tornado Relief Information**

Our community was just shaken by multiple tornadoes on Friday April 26, 2024. There are many in our communities no longer with homes, pets and necessities.

We will update this post as information comes in, please post below if you have anything to add as we are actively growing the list. Can be human and pet related!

If you find a lost pet, please post to Lost Pets of Omaha and your Nextdoor App right away!

To start, we, Woof & Whiskers have pet food available for tornado victims. We are also taking donations of pet food (dog, cat, small animal, reptile), cat litter, gift cards(for necessary supplies), kennels, and also have a tornado relief fund set up at both registers. All donated funds will be used to purchase much needed supplies for rescue efforts.

Nebraska Humane Society is helping with lost and found pets. They also have shelter available. Please call Animal Control at 402-444-7800 ext. 1 for assistance. Also accepting dog & cat food, litter and monetary donations at the shelter. Stray animals from affected areas will be held on a 30 day hold. For people who are displaced and aren’t able to keep their pets with them, NHS will board for two weeks!

Lost Pets of Omaha Area is assisting with lost pets! They have multiple volunteers with microchip scanners, traps for lost pets, teams successful in tracking lost pets, and supplies available to aid in relief. Please post to their page information If you have lost or found a lost pet. They have catch poles as well.

Southpaw Veterinary Clinic All pets impacted by the tornadoes will be treated free of charge! 19102 Q St. 402-830-3700

Westgate Animal Clinic is hosting a clinic Saturday, April 27th from 1-3 PM for pets in need from the tornadoes. Exam and treatment is free, but must pay for medications. Can also scan pets for microchips.

Dr. Williams with Petsmart on 72 & Sorensen has been helping with triage at the Walgreens in Elkhorn. Their location is also accepting people who need a place for their pups to stay misplaced by the tornadoes until Monday.

Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue, Inc has an active volunteer group able to search for lost pets.

These wonderful places are offering Emergency shelter for pets: Nebraska Humane Society, Waggin' Tailz Ranch, FurEver Home, Inc., Jeanette Hunt - Blair Animal Shelter, Camp K9 Fremont, Bark Avenue Omaha, Hound HQ, Dogtopia, Basset & Beagle Rescue of the Heartland, Town & Country Animal Rescue, Scatter Joy Acres

Stray to Spay has traps and trappers for those affected who lost their cats.

Felius Cat Cafe & Rescue is also able to foster/shelter cats.

St. Lutherans Church in Bennington is open and providing shelter and food. They are currently full of donations. If wanting to help, gift cards to Amazon, Menards, target and Walmart are most needed.

Nebraska Wildlife Rescue - If you find young animals out of their nests or injured animals of any age, please safely contain them in a cardboard box and keep them in a warm, quiet place until they can be transported to us. Then please call us at 402-234-2473 or bring the animals directly to us at 9777 M Street in Omaha. We are open from 10 AM to 8 PM, 7 days a week. We will take the injured and orphaned and care for them until they are healed and ready for release. If possible, we may also assist you in reunifying healthy babies with their mothers. Hours will be adjusted as needed to accommodate wildlife calls in the coming days. Anything you can do to help wildlife after the storms is greatly appreciated!

Salvation Army has a drop off site at Bright ideas on 144th and Blondo. They are asking for water, Gatorade, and cleaning supplies. Donate from 9-11 and then it will be come a distribution center between 11-3 on Sunday.

Bushwackers Saloon -Ralston : We kindly request your support by donating clothing items, toiletries, plastic totes, bubble wrap, trash bags, and cases of bottled water and other necessary supplies at Bushwackers, located at 7401 Main Street Ralston.

Does your dog go bananas 🍌 when people or animals walk past your house in the window?

When people or animals walk by your house they more than likely were on a walk and it’s considered odd to hang out in peoples driveways. But when your dog barks and the passerby continues on and leaves, your dog likely thinks they did a great job of protecting the house from a potential bad guy or burglar animal.

Dogs don’t always connect dots in the way that we want them too, sometimes we have to help them connect to the right dots ••••

During a time of day where you know people tend to walk their dogs or kids might play in the street practice putting your dog on leash and hanging out with them by the window. Every time they glance at something outside the window that could be triggering to them mark it and give them a small tasty treat. Repeat this exercise often until your dog can calmly people watch without big feelings.

Happy to America’s sweethearts 🖤

These dogs are beautiful, versatile and sweet as can be. I have enjoyed watching some of my golden students go on to be cherished family pets, hunting rockstars and some have even gone on to be successful sport dogs. Whatever a person choses to do with their golden, they are just happy to be there and to make their people happy.

Zola went to Fish Freaks 🐠

Previously Zola had been startled by fish tanks at another location so with Fish Freaks announcing they are dog friendly her mom knew it was a great training opportunity.

Zola likes to sniff out her environments right away which normally would be okay but her nose leads her astray and sometimes she has trouble navigating big feelings if she isn’t focused first and refocusing on her mom.

Zola worked on watching the fish without barking at them, heeling past all the exposed water (every water loving dogs kryptonite 😅) and even handled an off leash staff dog surprising her very well!

Say hi to new student Jasper the Greyhound 👋🏻

Jasper is a very sweet reminder that dogs are always learning. At 6 years old many would believe that he would be “set in his ways” but that couldn’t be more untrue.

It’s always a blast for me watching dogs learn new skills. Last night Jasper learned the beginning steps of “Leave It”to help him understand not to touch or chase things he shouldn’t, “Place” so that his parents can enjoy their own meal without him hovering and “Watch Me” to help him understand that eye contact from people is a good thing.

Jasper and his parents may be a new family but they are already so connected and I’m grateful to be a part of his journey to harmony in his new home.

Who else is crying on the inside (or outside) because winter is basically here?

Because of the cold I will not be offering weekly small group classes again until spring. However, this means I will have additional openings for in home private training, field trip private training and field trip small groups. Space is limited.

Anya adventured to Colorado with me last week where I mostly suffered with a cold but did get to take her on one good outing before suffering really set in.

Deer in Colorado are way more confident than the ones in Nebraska, I’ll give them that!

Now that I have returned I am scheduling in home and field trip training sessions.

My goal is to train dogs in a way that will encourage reliable skills both on and off the leash.

Relying on the leash as a primary means of “communicating” with your dog is a quick way to be reliant on leashes throughout a dogs life.

Happy 1st to Miss Zola Ann 🎉

Zola is one of those dogs that I both love and hate working with. That may sound odd but here’s why I say that - Zola is so smart and fun to train. BUT because she is such a great dog who learns quickly I doubt her mom will be needing training help for long 😭
This is a team that I think can do just about anything they set their minds too and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with them.

Claire adopted Zola from the Nebraska Humane Society 1 year ago today and I am pumped to see them continue to grow in the years to come.
