Now it is time for the largest great ape, the gorilla! 🦍

There are four subspecies of gorilla: the cross river gorilla, mountain gorilla, eastern lowland gorilla, and western lowland gorilla.

The cross river gorilla is the most endangered of all subspecies whereas the mountain gorillas are currently the only great ape with an increasing population. Eastern lowland gorillas are the largest subspecies and western lowland gorillas are the species you will see when visiting any zoo.

Here at the Zoo, we care for 11 gorillas: three females and eight males. They are divided into our family group and several bachelor groups.

Once young male gorillas reach a certain age in their native habitats, they will be pushed out of their family group by the dominate silverback. Gorillas are naturally social animals so when these young male leave, they will either start their own family group or join several other single males and form a bachelor group.

This is why you will see many of our males residing together in their indoor and outdoor habitats.

We need your help. The Nebraska Legislature is still considering a sales tax on veterinary services for pet animals, including those pets which provide therapy and emotional support. A final vote could come on Thursday, April 18.

We ask you to take moment to contact your state senator and encourage them, again, to VOTE NO on LB388.

• Additional taxes put a burden on working families.
• Increased veterinary costs could force pet owners to forego routine care, ultimately harming the pet and increasing the risk of spreading diseases.
• The rise in cost could create more pet surrenders or euthanasia.

This is an urgent matter for the veterinary and pet animal community. Please don't wait, contact your senator today and tell them to VOTE NO on LB388.

Don't be a fawnnapper! It's very common for moms to leave babies for the day while they forage. It's their hope that if they leave it near humans that it will help keep predators away. Doe will often hide fawns near your home or even right outside your home. This does not mean the baby is orphaned. Please contact a licensed Rehabilitator before moving a fawn. Unless they are crying, running around looking for the mom or showing signs of dehydration or hunger, they should be left alone.❤️
