🎁 Happy Boxing Day! 🎁

While the holiday hustle and bustle might be winding down, today is a great time to relax, enjoy leftover treats (pet-safe ones for your furry friends!), and maybe tackle some post-holiday cleanup.

Remember to keep your pets safe as you sort through wrapping paper, ribbons, and boxes—these items can be tempting but potentially hazardous for curious paws.

Whether you're continuing the celebrations or enjoying a cozy day at home, we hope you and your pets have a wonderful Boxing Day! 🐾

Warm wishes from all of us at Prairie Lane Veterinary Hospital!

Keep Your Pets Safe This Holiday Season: Avoid These Toxic Plants and Foods

The holiday season is a time of joy, decorations, and delicious treats—but it can also bring hidden dangers for our furry friends. Many popular holiday plants and foods are toxic to pets, and knowing what to avoid can help ensure a happy and safe holiday for all.

Common Holiday Plants to Watch Out For

Poinsettias: While not highly toxic, these festive plants can cause mild irritation to a pet’s mouth and stomach, leading to drooling and vomiting.

Holly and Mistletoe: These traditional decorations can be very dangerous. Holly can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, and depression, while mistletoe may lead to difficulty breathing, a slowed heart rate, or even collapse.

Lilies: For cat owners, lilies are especially hazardous. Just a small amount can cause kidney failure in cats.

Amaryllis: Often used in holiday floral arrangements, amaryllis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy in pets.

Christmas Trees: Pine needles from real trees can irritate your pet’s mouth and stomach and may even puncture the digestive tract if ingested. Tree water can also be toxic if it contains preservatives, pesticides, or fertilizers.

Holiday Foods to Keep Away from Pets

Chocolate: Theobromine, a compound in chocolate, is toxic to both dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous.

Grapes and Raisins: Even small amounts can cause kidney failure in dogs.

Alcohol: Drinks left unattended can be enticing to pets but are highly toxic, causing vomiting, difficulty breathing, or even death.

Onions, Garlic, and Chives: These ingredients, often found in holiday dishes, can damage red blood cells, leading to anemia.

Xylitol: This sugar substitute, found in sugar-free gum, candies, and some baked goods, can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar or liver failure in dogs.

Fatty or Rich Foods: Leftovers like turkey skin, gravy, or buttery dishes can cause pancreatitis—a potentially life-threatening condition.

Tips to Protect Your Pets

Decorate with care: opt for pet-safe plants and ensure all decorations are out of reach.
Supervise food and drinks: Keep plates, snacks, and beverages on high surfaces away from curious noses.
Educate guests: Remind visitors not to share food with your pets, no matter how tempting those puppy-dog eyes are!
Know the signs: Symptoms of poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, lethargy, difficulty breathing, or seizures. Contact your vet immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.
The holidays should be filled with love and laughter, not emergency vet visits. By being mindful of these common dangers, you can keep the season merry and bright for you and your pets. 🐾

Our Story

Prairie Lane Veterinary Hospital has proudly supported the pets of the Omaha, NE area since 1967. Prairie Lane Veterinary Hospital originally operated as a mobile, house-call veterinary service named Mobile Animal Clinic. Over the years, our practice has continued to develop into the high-quality location it is today in an effort to best serve the dogs, cats, and pocket pets of our community. Preventive care and modern animal medicine is at the core of everything we do. Every animal is a bit different; however, all pets benefit from preventive pet wellness. This includes annual physical exams, parasite control, spay/neuter procedure, and much more. Our dedicated veterinarians are also trained to comprehensively care for pets during each stage of life with unique clinical recommendations and lifestyle assessment.
