Feb. 1st marks the start of pet dental health month 🦷🪥

Having clean teeth is essential in the overall wellbeing of your pet. Approximately 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of dental disease by the young age of 3.

If your pet is showing signs of bad breath, build up in calculus, or inflamed and bleeding gums it may be time to schedule a dental. Pictured below is before and after a dental procedure!

It’s cold and snowy. Stay safe and warm! Both locations will close at 4pm today.

As this week comes to a close we can’t forget our newest technicians, Mercedes and Maia! They graduated from Iowa Western in 2022 and 2023. Being the newest to join us they have really found their footing at the clinic while getting used to the life of a technician. It’s been a pleasure to see what these two can do when it comes to patient care, lab work, and surgeries. We thank you for your dedication to all animals!

Q&A Mercedes

1. What’s one item you can’t live without? —— my stethoscope and bandage scissors

2. What’s your favorite thing you do as a vet tech? —— I love doing dentals, because they are satisfying and very tech reliant

3. What is something that you think people should know about vet techs? —— I think people should know that techs have a hard time leaving work at work because most of us are empaths and just can’t let a bad day go. They should know that as techs we are fighting for the right care for there animals and give them our all when there animals come in and we only ever want the best for our patients

Q&A Maia
1. If all your clothes had to be a color forever, what would it be? —— black🖤

2. Describe your dream vacation —— in a secluded area the mountains with a great view

3. What inspired you to be a vet tech? —— i’ve always wanted to work with animals since when i was young. i was always surrounded by them

Saturdays are for our technician Stephanie! She graduated in 2010 from Vatterott. While she may not be with us full-time, she puts her all into help treating patients with the huge challenge of doing it in just a short time frame before we are closed for the weekend. We thank you for your continuous hard work, you are a superstar!🌟

Q&A
1. Which unconventional pet would you like to have and why? —— A hedgehog, I like their spikes and how they roll into a ball.

2. What are your favorite hobbies? ——Reading, hiking with my dog

3. What’s your favorite thing to do in vet med? —— Lab work. I like to make slides from samples and determine if there are bacteria, yeast, or parasites. I also like to analyze urine and blood samples to see what may be causing an issue like crystals in urine or a high white count in blood. Since animals can't tell you what's wrong, it's important to study their lab work to help figure out what may be causing a problem.

Happy Friday! Our technician of the day today is Nicole. She graduated from Omaha College of Health Careers in 2000. While she’s an LVT, she is also our practice manager! Her everlasting positive attitude makes her perfect for the role as we all know we can go to her for everything. Even when she is swamped with work she’s always willing to lend a helping hand to the hospital side out with anything from surgeries, and radiology to phlebotomy and TNTs. None of us could do what we do without you!

1. What’s the hardest part about being in vet med? —— watching families go through heartbreak

2. What are your hobbies? —— reading, camping, enjoying family and friends

3. What animal/breed do you look forward to seeing in clinic? —— Goldens Retrievers are just the best!

It’s Alexis’s day! She is a bright light that graduated from Iowa Western in 2019. Alexis takes on a leadership role by using her knowledge and skills to help keep the clinic organized and running smoothly. We also recognize and appreciate the way she’s always looking to try new things to improve our patient care!

Q&A

1. What is something that has been the highlight of your year? —— Recently, I become a lead technician and I am very excited for my new role and I’m looking forward to being a good leader and coworker to all my fellow vet techs and assistants.

2. If you had to spend the rest of your life as a TV character who would you be? —— I don’t have a favorite tv character but, I would love to live the rest of my life in the tv show, Game of Thrones. There’s dragons, dire wolves, castles and beautiful lands, what more could I ask for!

3. what’s your favorite part about being a vet tech? —— One of my favorite parts of being a vet tech is the patient care that I am able to give. I do have a special place in my heart for our parvo patients and while it is challenging taking care of a puppy with parvo and the outcome isn’t always great, I enjoy the one on one care that I am able to provide.

1. Where did your love of animal conservation stem from? —— it came from my many visits to the zoo as a child. I knew one day I would want to work there. As a child in the 80s and 90s, I grew up watching Mutual of Omaha’s Animal Kingdom, Zoobilee Zoo, and of course Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter

2. If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be and why? —— it would be to the southern part of Africa to see African Painted Dogs in their natural habitat

Happy Vet Tech Week!

We are so excited to be celebrating all of our wonderful technicians and all the work they do to keep our pets happy and healthy! 🩺🐱🐶

To start, the spotlight is on our lead Kelli. She studied at Vatterott and graduated in 2012. She quickly became someone who we can all rely on from her excellent patient care, to teaching new students and to educating our clients. She always has a great attitude and uses her puns to put a smile on everyone’s face. We are so lucky to have her on our team!

Q&A
1. What inspired you to become a vet tech? —— As a kid I connected with animals better than people. I've always known that is where I wanted to end up. After several jobs that had nothing to do with animals I decided to go back to my passion. Being an advocate for my patients and giving them a voice is what I enjoy.

2. What is something that you think people should know about techs? ——We have favorites. We try not to have favorite patients but sometimes when we see one of our favorite pets come in it makes our day.

3. if you had to be a dog or cat which would you be and why? —— I would be a cat. I think there are a couple songs about it (Aristocats)
