🚨 Pet Safety Alert: The Dangers of Rodenticides! 🚨

Rodenticides are a common solution for controlling rodent populations, but they can pose serious risks to our beloved pets. Here are the four primary categories of rodenticides and their potential dangers:

Anticoagulants: These cause internal bleeding by preventing blood from clotting. Ingesting even a small amount can be fatal to pets. Common brands often used to contain these, but recently, D-con has switched to a safer alternative.

Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3): While effective at killing rodents, this type increases calcium levels in the blood, leading to kidney failure in pets. D-con now exclusively uses cholecalciferol, so keep an eye out!

Bromethalin: A potent neurotoxin that affects the brain and nervous system, causing severe symptoms and potentially death in pets. It's fast-acting and dangerous even in small doses.

Zinc Phosphide: When ingested, it reacts with stomach acid to release toxic phosphine gas, which can be fatal to pets if inhaled or ingested.

🔍 Important Note: Always check the labels of any rodenticide products you bring into your home. Choose pet-safe alternatives, and store all rodenticides out of reach of your furry friends.

🛡️ Prevention is key! Contact us, Urgent Pet Care in Papillion, or the Pet Poison Control Help Line immediately if you suspect your pet has ingested any of these substances. Stay safe and protect your pets! 🐾❤️

If you must use any of these chemicals, please be sure they are in a dog and child safe distribution box. Also watch out for the animals killed by the poison because they have not metabolized all of it and can still kill your pets if consumed. If your pet gets into these products please keep the package so we know what poison to treat and call us (tel:402-389-3389), in Papillion, or the Pet Poison Control Help Line immediately.

We found a Cuterebra in a dog's neck last week. It presented as a tumor but once the dog was under anesthesia one of the techs noticed the tumor was moving! 🤢🤢🤢 Dr. Emily noped out of the room and Dr. Kate had to remove the larva. 😂 This was a botfly larva that the dog ingested somewhere. They tend to migrate to the neck region. They are not common in this climate zone.

Have you met Dr. Emily's dog, Bach? Have you heard his story? Bach is a retired seeing-eye dog. His previous handler and best friend, Lauren, started bringing Bach in as a patient. We loved him from the beginning- what a SWEETIE. Bach has severe allergies (environmental and food), and he was getting too expensive for Lauren to care for properly. She had to retire him, and if she didn't have someone here in town who would adopt him, she was never going to see him again. Dr. Emily and her husband went to Bach's retirement party, and Joel fell IN LOVE with Bach. (I'm not kidding, he loves Bach more than he loves me....) It might have been the cupcake stealing, or the adorable celebratory zoomies Bach got at his party, but Dr. Emily drove 16 hours to pick him up on New Year's Day 2023, (he had to be "debriefed" in New Jersey after his retierment- haha!) and he's been living his best life with us since. In the meantime, Lauren gets to see him regularly, and we've become great friends with her. She is involved in Beepball, a baseball program for people who are blind or visually impaired. This is a GREAT program, and we are excited to announce we are holding an exhibition day on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Kirn Park in Council Bluffs. Our Lone Tree employee softball team will be in attendance, playing the All-Women Sirens team. We would LOVE to have you out to play or spectate! We will have food and drinks, music, fun, and the chance to try out something totally unique! We'll have further posts about this soon, and please let me know if you have questions! Thanks, and we hope to see you out there!!

Beat the Heat: Keeping Your Brachycephalic Pup Safe this Summer ☀️

Summer's on its way, and while we all love soaking up the sunshine, it's important to remember our furry friends can overheat easily, especially brachycephalic breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus! We've already seen two French Bulldogs in the last week that had to have emergency care to cool them down from dangerous temperatures.

Their short noses, small nostrils, and long palates make panting, their main way to cool down, much more difficult. Here's how to keep your flat-faced friend safe:

🐶Limit outdoor time: Avoid midday walks and stick to early mornings or evenings when it's cooler. Short potty breaks are best in hot weather.
🐶Seek shade and water: Always provide fresh, cool water and plenty of shaded areas for your pup to rest.
🐶Cooling aids: Cooling vests, mats, and misting can be lifesavers.
🐶Know the signs: Watch for excessive panting, glazed eyes, lethargy, and vomiting - these could be signs of heatstroke, a medical emergency!

Want to learn more? We've got tons of resources on keeping your pet cool this summer. Leave a comment below or visit our website for details!

P.S. Don't forget sunscreen! Pink noses and light fur can sunburn too!

Parvovirus is everywhere, and it's a serious threat to our dogs. This highly contagious virus can cause severe illness in dogs, especially puppies. That's why it's crucial to get your pets vaccinated. At Lone Tree Animal Care Center, our standard vaccination series includes DAPP-V, which protects against parvovirus, helping reduce or eliminate the severity of infections.

The cost of treating parvo is significantly higher than the cost of vaccination (to the tune of hundreds of dollars), and more importantly, vaccination is much better for your dog's health.

If you are taking your puppy to locations where other dogs have been present, it is essential to understand that Parvo can remain in the environment for months, making it easy for unvaccinated dogs to contract the virus. When we have a parvo-positive dog in the clinic we have to put them in isolation and wash down everywhere they have been with bleach or activated hydrogen peroxide as they is the only cleaners that can kill the virus.

Don't wait until it's too late. Schedule an appointment with us today to ensure your pet is protected. Let's keep our pets safe and healthy together! 🐾

🐶 Lost and confused: Storms can disorient pets, leading them to wander far from home. A microchip scan can reunite them quickly.

🐶 Missing collars and tags: Storms can damage or remove collars and tags, leaving your pet unidentifiable. Microchips are permanent and reliable.

🐶 Increased chance of reunion: With shelters overflowing after storms, microchips offer the fastest way to get your pet back to you.
