NEBRASKA HUNDESPORT CLUB·MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2020·
Nebraska Hundesport Club is a DVG club located in Omaha, Nebraska. NHC provides an atmosphere/opportunity/outlet for both handlers and their dogs to learn, develop and train their dogs and participate in a dog sport called IGP/IPO/Shutzhund. (A dog spo

rt that originated from Germany over 100 years ago). It is a three phase sport that includes Tracking, Obedience and Protection, Dog triathalon so to speak. NHC is an all-breed club, which means that, regardless of your dog’s breed, if your dog has the right temperament, the right drives and you can work with a diverse group of dog enthusiasts, you are welcome. About DVG
DVG – Deutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundsportvereine (German organization of working dog sport clubs) is the largest working dog organization in the world. It is also the oldest Schutzhund training organization in the world. It has over 30,000 members participating in many different dog sports. In addition to Schutzhund, DVG in Germany offers agility (its most popular sport), flyball, search and rescue trials, rally obedience, water rescue, obedience, and many other sports. Schutzhund was one of the original DVG sports, and it remains an important part of the organization, even though the number of participants is relatively small. DVG is divided into a number of regions, called Landesverbände (LV). All of the LVs are in Germany, except for LV DVG America, which covers all of North America. The president of LV DVG America is a member of the Board of DVG, and goes to Germany each year to the annual business meeting to vote on Board and membership affairs. Some Landesverbände are further divided into regions called Kreisgruppe (KG). LV DVG America has 4 KGs – West, Midwest, Southeast, and North. DVG is a member of VDH, the German Kennel Club, roughly equivalent to the AKC. In turn, VDH is a member of FCI, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (World Canine Organization). FCI is the largest canine organization in the world. It includes 92 member clubs and contract partners. Most of these are breed clubs, but there are also a number of working dog organizations. DVG, like many other working dog organizations, follows the rules of the FCI for running its trials and other competitions.

I had searched for a local IGP club in early 2024 but did not find one, at least through the searches I made. But I knew of the sport and was impressed with how an IGP trained dog makes for a good companion and protector. In the fall of 2024, I wanted to get into the sport even though I could not find a local club. I thought I could train my dog myself at least in the tracking discipline of IGP. I was out one morning training my 6-month-old German Shepherd Dog to track and was amazed when I saw several people close to my location doing the same thing. That’s when Akin came over to me and showed me a few things to help me. We talked for a few hours, and he told me about Nebraska Hundesport Club and that it was an IGP dog club. I was hooked. I soon became a member and began my IGP journey. I now have a titled dog with two titles, FCI BH and FCI IGP1. We are now training for a fall trial with a goal of achieving an FCI IGP2 and FCI FH1 title. I would not have been successful if it weren’t for Akin. His methods focus on each handler’s ability and their dog’s capabilities and train them as a unique team. Akin knows each handler/dog team is different from another team and trains each team to bring out their strengths and be ready to achieve IGP titles. His years of experience gives him unique capabilities to read a handler/dog and bring out the best in them under every circumstance. Akin has been extremely supportive, patient, understanding and my best advocate and cheerleader. He wants nothing more than for club members to be successful and Akin will do everything he can to make that happen. Akin will help you build a solid relationship with your dog and help you excel in the IGP sport. I am grateful for Akin’s guidance and friendship.

"I found Nebraska Hundesport Club in the fall of 2017. I had heard of Schutzhund (now known as IGP) and wanted to give it a try when I moved back to Omaha from Portland, OR. I found Akin to be a patient and very passionate teacher, eager to bring everyone along with him in the sport no matter their age or innate talent level, as long as they brought their own enthusiasm and dedication to the table. I have since put titles on 4 dogs, a sh*tzu-maltese and 3 German Shepherds. I now hold four FCI BH certificates, three FCI IGP 1 titles, one FCI FH 1 and one FCI FH2 title, and one FCI IGP 2 title on the four dogs that I trialed. IGP is a sport that requires constant problem solving and communication between the dog and the handler. Akin has an intuitive understanding of the dog's perspective and exceptional ability to reconcile the handler's behavior with the dog's needs in the moment. IGP is an excellent sport for those who would enjoy working on Sudoku puzzles but with their dog and, with over 35 years of experience, Akin will set you up with a solid foundation in the sport."

NHC 10th annual trial!!!

God is good is an understatement for what this weekend means to all of us. All our winter training has paid off. Unless you are in the NHC inner circle, it’s hard to fully appreciate what it took to make this trial happen. Against what felt like insurmountable odds, we came together and made it happen, and every single dog that trialed earned their title!

This weekend was truly a team effort, and there are so many people who made it possible.

A heartfelt thank you to our club member and helper, Jovan Djordjevic, who traveled all the way from Chicago to prepare our dogs. Unfortunately, a family emergency forced him to leave before the trial, and we missed him greatly. We hope everything is well and wish he could have been there with us.

Thank you to Wallace Payne, another NHC club member, who stepped in without hesitation and helped secure a trial helper when we needed it most. Because of you, we were able to bring in Steve Liggens, a USCA National-level helper, who dropped everything and flew in from Detroit to support us.

Steve, your work this weekend was nothing short of exceptional. You handled every dog with power, precision, and, most importantly, safety. We are incredibly grateful and welcome you back anytime.

Thank you Judge Jani Turkia for your thoughtful evaluations and detailed critiques. Your feedback gave us valuable insight into our training progress, both as handlers and with our dogs. We always enjoy having you and seeing Ms. Andrea and your wonderful children. Thanks John for taking care of Jani getting to and from the different locations and getting him Starbucks!!!

Thank you to our very own Lindsay Ewalt for another outstanding job as trial secretary. Your organization and dedication do not go unnoticed, we appreciate you more than words can say. It goes without saying that we appreciate Sandy Nekuda for allowing us to have a place to work our dogs. Thanks for all you do keep the grass mowed and potter potty clean for us.

Finally, thank you to all our club members for working super hard over the winter and trusting the process. Congratulations to all of you for all your hard work and success:

* John & Argo — FCI BH, FCI IGP1
* CJ & Phantom — FCI BH
* CJ & Piranha — FCI FPr3, FCI UPr1
* Sandy & Darka — FCI IGP1
* Akin & Argo — FCI IGP1
* Akin & Bullet — FCI IGP1
* Mindy & Petra — FCI IGP2
* Marie & A’Turro — FCI IGP3

We couldn’t be more proud of every handler, every dog, and everyone who played a role in making this weekend such a success. It was amazing to see and hear everyone cheering for each other. Looking forward to our fall trial in November. The pictures say it all. Another successful trial in the books!!!
