Big Muddy Urban Farm is a collective of local food producers in Omaha. We are concerned with the current state of the food system at large. Moreover, we recognize the social and environmental injustices that have negatively impacted our neighborhoods and believe that food plays a prominent role in the overall health of our community. By providing a local
and diverse source of fruits, vegetables an
d herbs, as well as sharing skills and resources with our community, we hope to encourage communal resilience, empowerment, and a more localized economy. We are committed to engaging sustainably in our financial, environmental and cultural practices, by responding and adapting to the dynamic urban
environment in which we live.

🌱 We’re excited to introduce Nate Johnson as Big Muddy Urban Farm’s Grants and Finance Administrator. Nate has helped out with his family's garden since he could hold a watering can and has been involved in community work since high school. Coming from the field of outdoor education, Nate is passionate about getting people outside and touching dirt. He hopes to use these experiences to help grow Big Muddy's impact on our community. When not at Big Muddy, Nate is often found working with groups like Elevate Omaha and Inclusive Communities, or in his free time, reading, experiencing nature, and spending time with his loved ones. 🌱
Contact Nate at [email protected]
🌱 We’re excited to introduce Kourtney Wismont as Big Muddy Urban Farm’s Program Manager. They have been an untiring leader in the urban farming community for the past seven years and have been in leadership roles in other non-profits. Their main mission is to grow fresh produce in order to gain food sovereignty in North and South Omaha. Having co-founded Free Farm Syndicate in 2016 with a handful of talented peers, they managed to cultivate and produce thousands of pounds of free fresh organic produce for the community every year. Currently, Kourtney is furthering their expertise in plant and pollinator knowledge by finishing their Biology degree at UNO, as they value and want to teach practices of building biodiversity within urban growing landscapes. 🌱

Every dollar helps us put seeds in the ground and get fresh produce into the hands of our neighbors. Check out the link in our bio to get cooking!
The cookbook's leek and potato soup, homemade apple cider, or stuffed squash would all be perfect for this chilly day or any of the many to come.

⭐️ From the first market to the last, 18 weeks later, the 2022 Aspiring Farmer cohort urban farmed the season through! ⭐️ This consisted of the cold days, planning away, setting values toward the cohort name called Sunny Rows Collective to then writing agreements, building a webpage, and promoting for a 30-member Community Supported Agriculture Share program! Then starting a plethora of seeds, raising laying hens from day-old birds, cultivating beds at the six plots in Gifford Park, daily watering and care of crops that led to weekly harvests for the CSA, Gifford Park Neighborhood Market, and retail outlets. They hosted farm tours, tabled at community events, visited some really rad farmers and attended the Moses conference throughout their time at Big Muddy too!
We’re extremely proud of their accomplishments and we can’t wait to give it up for this group and their growth! Come help us celebrate this Saturday at our Chili Potluck. Feel free to bring a dish, but not to worry if you can't, we'll have a big pot of chili to enjoy from. Come by! Saturday from 12pm to 2pm at 3320 Burt St. Small pumpkins will be available to festively paint, while you can also stop by across the street at our Burt st plot to admire flowers, plus more. Hope to see you there!

We are moving towards leaderful organizing and splitting the executive director position into these two exciting opportunities. If you love growing food, building community and want to be part of an impactful organization, we’d love to hear from you!
💚 Program Manager - PM has an important role in the culture, community life, and educational development of our 9-month, live-in urban agriculture residency program. The New American Urban Farmer program has grown to new heights this season and we’re looking to celebrate together! Come by Cooper Farm this Saturday between 11am to 2pm for a tasting of dishes and touring the farm plot. $10 suggested donation that directly supports the program. The New American Urban Farmer program aims to develop community connections, entrepreneurial skills, and agriculture practice through a cooperative farming model at Cooper Farm. Christine Ross started the program in 2018 and Big Muddy linked up with her this year to provide fiscal sponsorship and support.
Please note: the pavilion is on top of the hill and requires driving up the boulevard to the top of the hill. Please start by coming to the pavilion where food will be served. The farm plot is at a different location on the farm and we’ll guide you from the pavilion. We’ll serve food as supplies last.
It’s time for the farmers market! We will be at the tomorrow from 8:30am-12:30pm and will have greens, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, and flowers available. Hope to see you there!

This week we ventured to nearby urban agriculture projects, expanding perspectives of our food system and urban agriculture. We joined Audrey at helped mulch and see what’s growing by the various partners that make the space flourish. We took a moment while we were at 13th and Jones st to see the Root of Two exhibit at and started a farm band. Check both the garden and exhibit out soon! Then We travelled to to explore the food hub facilities. Amy and Natavia showed us everything from the rooftop garden, to the culinary education space set up for their culinary certificate program, and the shared commercial kitchen space where we met finishing up juicing for the day. We also got to hear about NMEP csa program and compare notes. Thanks for welcoming us and showing us around!
🧄 Sorry if our breath has a smell to it these next few weeks. We’re just thrilled about our garlic harvest today!
Garlic is so wonderful. Generally easy to plant in the fall, some maintenance for weeds in the spring, and then a harvest of a bulb that packs a punch of health benefits. Not to mention the warding off of vampire’s . This batch of garlic was planted by last year’s aspiring farmer cohort for this year’s group to harvest, to which we’ll plant in the fall for next year’s group. We’re hanging them up to cure and then will store them in a cool dry place for extra shelf life, if they’re not all gone by that point 😁.

Today is the last day for Class IV of the Aspiring Farmer Residency and we celebrate the achievements and growth from this year's group of fellows - Irene Atayi, Jasmine Marr, Phalin Strong, Carly Frazee, Katie Bettin, and Matt Wettengel. When we began Class IV of the Residency last winter, we forgot to put the farming-in-a-pandemic workshop into our curriculum. We couldn't have expected the challenges a pandemic would place on our lives, our community, and the world. The importance of a connected, equitable, and community based food system has been and continues to be exemplified many times over; from the unjust working conditions of farm laborers and meatpacking workers, to the waste of ploughing under food crops nationally, to the increased exposure of food insecurity and nutrition problems in our community. Within it all, this year's cohort continued to adapt to new market regulations, restricted access to usual infrastructure, and fewer community engagement opportunities; all while beginning a learning journey in farming and food system advocacy. Overall, this year’s group grew 2,650+ lbs of fresh, nutrient dense produce on six urban lots in the Gifford Park Neighborhood. They worked alongside the many food systems workers helping communities stay connected and healthy during this pandemic. Overcoming many obstacles, the group has a long list of achievements: -🍎 - Created a 30+ member Community Supported Agriculture program. -🥬 - Partnered with neighbors and organizations by providing resident-grown, fresh veggies and helping address food insecurity No More Empty Pots, Free Farm Syndicate, Feed the People - Omaha, Media Corp. Midtown Mutual Aid (Join in supporting these groups in their on-going food accessibility efforts!) -🥕- Vended weekly at the pay-what-you-can Fair Deal Market. Thanks for welcoming us in the marketOEDCOmaha! -👩🏾🌾 - Developed farmer to wholesale relationships. Thanks for supporting beginning farmers and expanding
The Aspiring Farmer Residency provided Katie unparalleled autonomy in how she managed one of Big Muddy's six plots through the 2020 season. Now being aware of the challenges involved in growing food, she feels confident that she will leave the residency ready to pursue her passion for food production. Do you know anyone who wants to develop their food production skills through a decision-making experience at Big Muddy Urban Farm? It's open call for Class V of the Aspiring Farmer Residency - an educational program where selected residents gain real-world training in starting a business and growing food for community while living with fellow farmer residents. Prior farm or garden experience is not necessary, as long as you are eager to learn. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Oct. 1 at 5 p.m., learn more and apply at bigmuddyurbanfarm.org/afr.
Applications for next years residency open today! Join in our farm tour to help celebrate and share the Aspiring Farmer Residency opportunity with anyone you think would be interested. Application and details are on our website: www.bigmuddyurbanfarm.org
