Springtime is near! Enjoy these throwbacks to spring of 2016, the first year we began chipping away at the back half of our 1.5 acre property.

At this point in time, we grew annual vegetables, herbs and a few flowers on the south side of our lot (to the left in the first photo); we also planted the first fruit trees. A small loyal crew of CSA members (CSA: Community Supported Agriculture) and Gifford Park market goers were the backbone of our tiny operation. In the beginning, our dedication to learning and growing greatness far outweighed the amount of experience we had, and that community support early on was a driving force that propelled us forward.

More about Benson Bounty's history: our summer vegetable CSA program and farmers market presence grew until 2021 at which time we made a hard pivot toward more perennials and fewer annual varieties. We began using season extension tools in 2018, the first wildflowers entered the stage in 2019, we opened an online shop in 2020, and hosted the first farm event in 2021.

We've been chipping away at new garden spaces and projects each year and are excited to share more 2025 updates with you!

Things are wild!

Check out the infographic to see the top 5 customer product picks from our online shop since Jan 1st:

➡️ Bulk dried Wild Bergamot tied for 3rd place as the most popular product; it is also incorporated into our soaps & candles so we thought it deserved special recognition 🏆 Photo: the Wild Bergamot patch last summer!

➡️ Several additional varieties of wildflowers are used for our dried bouquets, gift baskets, soaps & candles too; in summary, wildflowers stole the spotlight in our online shop this winter

We love wildflowers:

-They add value & serve numerous purposes; not only are they a more sustainable landscape that provides wildlife habitat & food, they also boast multiple uses for us such as herbal tea, or as a medicinal or culinary herb

- Wild weather events & drought have nothing on wildflowers; once they are watered in well, there is no stopping them (or irrigating them)

- Varying bloom times and seed heads offer beauty throughout the seasons

We went BIG on dried wildflowers last year & added large arrangements alongside the minis in our online shop 💐

This allowed us to extend the season of our flowers while offering customers a unique preserved style or “green option” when it comes to shopping for flowers. All of our wildflowers grow freely, without the use of irrigation or chemicals.

Last week we had the honor of fulfilling a bouquet gift order from some special folks at Fontenelle Forest, a place in our community that we have enjoyed visiting thoroughly over the years.

Is Fontenelle new to you? They are in Bellevue, NE & their mission is to be active stewards of the land—they promise to protect and restore it for future generations. They are doing incredible work in conservation, education and raptor recovery 🦅 🌳A walk in the woods, whether on the beautiful boardwalk or down one of the many hiking trails, is time well spent.

"Many of you know that several years ago we helped revitalize the inactive Benson Little League fields that have been in the neighborhood for about sixty years. Together with other community members, we poured an incredible amount of work into the league.

Last spring a flash flood devastated the fields, rendering them unusable. The Sherwood Foundation contacted us about their desire to renovate the league space and build a state-of-the-art facility for community youth! Construction is set to begin this summer—board members are working out final plans with the engineers.

Additionally, we proudly passed the President position over to Joshua Wendell this winter; both Mark and Michelle remain active on the board."

Thanks to our nephew, Cohen, for this photo 💚

It has been a pleasure working with students & staff from the Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, Omaha community over the years. Michelle graduated high school there which makes it extra special.

This semester, STEAM department students are creating cool swag items like stickers, bookmarks and keychains for the community—check out one of the sticker designs students made! These will be distributed free at our Pollinator Party in June!

Here's what we have planned w/ Duchesne for 2025:

-4th annual Career Day for senior students in March
-2nd annual STEAM department project
-2nd annual group workshop

Been a while since we introduced ourselves on here! We are Mark and Michelle Brannen, owners & operators at Benson Bounty.

Enjoy this throwback of us in 2013! We packed our bags, skipped town, and spent the bulk of the year traveling and volunteering abroad in Central & South America.

One of the places we volunteered extensively was an organic produce farm in Panama. It's where the dream began! We decided that we would seek out a little pocket of land and begin a family farming business back home in Omaha, Nebraska.

AND WHAT A RIDE IT HAS BEEN, THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE!! It means the world to us. Fun facts: to this day, we keep in touch with friends we made while traveling & many customers compliment us on our Spanish-speaking abilities!

It’s been a tradition over the years to gift dried flowers & herbs to our kids’ nature preschool for craft projects. Can’t wait to see what they create with this box o’ fun 💐🌿 What do you recognize in its dried form?

Tough to believe that our youngest will wrap up preschool this spring & head off to kindergarten in the fall. We’ve always run Benson Bounty as a “mom and pop shop” business with a full-time stay-at-home parenting twist. Bet some of you can relate!
