The barn is like stepping into a portal.

For awhile, time doesn’t exist.

To do lists don’t exist.

Neither do medical bills, interest rates, insurance, taxes, or inflation.

At the barn, we can dream, and anything is possible.

On the back of a horse, my soul is set free.

And I’m still trying to figure out how to hold on to that feeling in the darker areas of my life.

When I walk back into reality and everything comes flooding back in unsympathetically.

I don’t think most people realize how important horses actually are.

How deeply it’s written into my being.

A horse is not a luxury item.

A horse is a bridge to healing and truth.

“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.”

Leading for connection

How well does your horse lead? Have you ever considered this? How connected are they to you and you to them at the end of a lead line?

I feel this is one step of a whole process that is grossly overlooked.

You might say “My horse leads fine” and he well might but what standard are you referring to on whether your horse leads well or not?

Leading might seem trivial in the big picture but it really is the first thing you do with your horse and the last thing you do with him. You have to lead him from the pasture to the stall and back again after you ride. Why not make sure you are spending ample time creating a connection on the ground while leading as this is the time you get to feel how your horse is comfortable mentally and physically before you ride and how he feels after you ride.

I see far too many horses and humans disconnected from each other on the ground and then the human is still trying to ask the horse to complete a task when they don’t even have step 1, standing quietly on the lead, accomplished.

Connection is the beginning ingredient to everything. Each person has a different idea of what connection is but for me, it is the willingness to be vulnerable enough to be molded into something beautiful. We must have some vulnerability in order to have connection because connection comes from the heart.

I teach performance liberty clinics and do some performance liberty training at home. One of the most common issues I see at the Liberty clinics and in horses that come for liberty training is that they do not lead connected. Most of them cannot stand still on the end of a lead rope.

We must start with teaching our horses to lead with connection first before anything. This involves making sure our horse leads softly and lightly. Can you influence where they look? Can you influence where their head position is at? Can you influence at what speed they are walking without pulling on the lead rope? What is your horse’s relationship to your hand touching them? Does your horse walk with you willingly or does he stride ahead or lag behind you? Can you hold the lead rope without tension on your shoulders, arms or hands? Can you walk softly and let your footfalls be light and flowing? Can you breathe and allow yourself to release the tension of the unknown and allow yourself to be in the moment? Can you be aware of yourself so you can be aware of your horse?

These are elements of leading for connection. If we cannot do these things, why are we doing anything else.

Today I painted a new residents nails at work and as we were going over colors, she mentioned she wanted clear. The only thought that came to my mind was "CLEAR?! That's no fun." I asked her why she wanted clear and she said, "My hands are ugly, I don't want to draw attention to them." I then carefully responded with, "Your hands tell the story of your life. They tell the story of love, of care and adventure. These hands have touched and held things that most people can only wish to one day." And with that, she went with the color pink for her nails.

Sometimes what we are so insecure with, others find beauty in. 💖

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BORN IN 1930's, 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's and Early 80's !!! First, you survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, your baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. You had no childproof lids on medicine ..medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when you rode your bikes, you had no helmets, not to mention, the risks you took hitch-hiking .. As children, you would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun. You drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle. You shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. You ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but you weren't overweight because...... YOU WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
You would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach you all day. And you were OK. You would spend hours building your go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out you forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, you learned to solve the problem . You did not have Play stations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........YOU HAD FRIENDS and you went outside and found them! You fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents you played with worms(well most boys did) and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although you were told it would happen, you did not poke out any eyes. You rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing you out if you broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. You had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and you learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.
