What is CGC? How will your family benefit, from this program?

The AKC Canine Good Citizen™ (CGC) program provides a perfect framework for training your dog to become a polite member of society. Based on you and your dog’s training needs, you have multiple options to get started.

You can teach your dog the 10 CGC skills yourself, work with a CGC trainer or attend a CGC training class where the test is given at the end of graduation.

Canine Good Citizen training classes are a great option when you are looking to train your dog in a group environment and work on their socialization skills. Classes are offered at many locations, throughout Washington state.

Working on Your CGC Skills at Home helps you and your dog. From sit to stay, down to come, the AKC.tv is a great first stop for training your dog in the ten required CGC skills at home.

Remember, when training your dog at home, you’ll still need to make time for plenty of socialization, either through group classes or at your favorite dog park but this series can help you get down the basics.

There will be available classes, starting mid April, in Pierce County, Thurston County, Lewis County, and South King County.

CRUFT: THE MAN THAT NEVER OWNED A DOG

The Crufts Dog Show starts today — the biggest dog show on earth, with over 18,000 competing dogs.

But guess what? The whole thing is named after a man who never owned a dog!

Charles Cruft was born in 1852 into a family of jewelers. Charles had no interest in his family's business, and upon graduation from college in 1876, took a job with American James Spratt who had set up a new venture in Holborn, London selling "dog cakes".

Charles Cruft did not own a dog, but he was an ambitious dog food salesman, and traveled around England and Scotland drumming up business for Spratt. Cruft's travels brought him in contact with large estates, sporting kennels and the first commercial dog breeders in the UK.

While traveling to Europe in 1878 hawking Spratt's dog biscuits, a group of French dog breeders invited the young Cruft (just two years out of college) to organize and promote the canine section of the Paris Exhibition, which he did.

Upon returning to England in 1886, Crufts took up the management of the Allied Terrier Club Show at the Royal Aquarium at Westminster, with an eye towards making money.

The first formal "Cruft's Show" was booked into the Royal Agricultural Hall, Islington in 1891. This was the first in a long series of dog shows that Crufts held there, each of them making an appealing profit for Cruft, who still did not own a dog himself.

In 1938 Charles Cruft died (still having never owned a dog) and his widow ran the 1939 Crufts Dog Show. Three years later Mrs Cruft felt the responsibility for running the show was too demanding and, in order to perpetuate the name of the show her husband had made world famous, she asked the Kennel Club to take it over and it was sold to them.

The 1948 Crufts Dog Show was the first under the Kennel Club auspices.

🐾 10 Fun Facts About the Boston Terrier 🎩🐶
With thanks to the AKC Website for some of this content.

The Boston Terrier is a pint-sized charmer with a tuxedo coat 🖤🤍, big round eyes 👀, and a personality that wins hearts instantly 💕. Despite their name, they’re not actually terriers—they belong to the Non-Sporting Group and have been beloved companions for over a century. Many famous figures, from U.S. presidents 🇺🇸 to Hollywood celebrities 🎬, have adored this breed. Here’s what makes the Boston Terrier so special!

1️⃣ They Became Famous in Boston’s Beacon Hill 🏙️🐶
Although Boston Terriers originated in Southborough, Massachusetts, they became particularly popular in Boston’s affluent Beacon Hill neighborhood during the 19th century. Wealthy Bostonians often had coachmen care for their dogs 🚖🐕, and the breed flourished in the city. They were eventually named the official state dog of Massachusetts in 1979! 🏆🐾

2️⃣ They Were Once Called “Roundheads” 🔵🐶
With their distinct, curved skull and expressive eyes 😍, early Boston Terriers earned the nickname “Roundheads.” Originally bred to be lapdogs for high-society ladies 💎👒, their adorable, short-muzzled faces made them instant favorites.

3️⃣ They’re Nicknamed the “American Gentleman” 🎩🐕
With their distinguished black-and-white (or brindle) coats resembling formal attire 🕴️, and their polite yet playful nature, Boston Terriers earned the nickname “American Gentleman.” Their even temperament and affectionate disposition make them ideal family pets 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦❤️.

4️⃣ The AKC Recognized Them in 1893 📜🏅
Boston Terriers were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1893, becoming one of the first U.S.-born breeds to gain recognition 🐕🇺🇸. They were sandwiched between the Borzoi (1891) and the Field Spaniel (1894) in the list of recognized breeds.

5️⃣ Famous Figures Have Owned Boston Terriers 🎥🌟
Boston Terriers have been beloved by many famous personalities! Helen Keller had a Boston Terrier named Sir Thomas 🦮, who accompanied her during lectures at Radcliffe College. U.S. President Gerald Ford 🇺🇸 had a Boston named Fleck, while silent film star Pola Negri’s Boston Terrier, Patsy, was often photographed alongside her 📸. More recently, actor Jake Gyllenhaal has been spotted with a Boston Terrier, further proving their celebrity appeal! 🎭✨ Others who have been owned by a Boston Terrier include Robin Williams, Rose McGowan, Louis Armstrong 🎺, Joan Rivers, LeAnn Rimes 🎤, Gary Oldman, Joan Crawford, and Kate Mara!

6️⃣ They Come in Three Size Categories ⚖️🐶
Boston Terriers may be small, but they come in three distinct weight classes! 🏋️‍♂️ The AKC recognizes Bostons under 15 pounds (6.8 kg) ⚖️, between 15-20 pounds (6.8-9 kg), and those ranging from 20-25 pounds (9-11.4 kg). Despite their compact size, they are sturdy, athletic dogs with plenty of energy! ⚡🐕

7️⃣ They’re Stars in Dog Sports 🏆🐕💨
Boston Terriers aren’t just adorable—they’re also athletic and intelligent! 🧠💪 They excel in various dog sports, including Agility, Flyball, Scentwork, and Fast CAT. Their speed 🚀, trainability, and enthusiasm make them a joy to watch in competition. Plus, their expressive faces make them natural stars on social media! 📱⭐

8️⃣ They’re Known for Their Signature Snorts and Snores 😴🐽
Because of their short muzzles, Boston Terriers are known for making adorable snorting and snoring sounds 💤🐕. While this can be charming, it’s also a sign of their brachycephalic nature, meaning they need extra care in hot weather ☀️🥵 and when exercising.

9️⃣ They Have a Long Lifespan for a Small Breed 🎂🐶
Boston Terriers typically live between 11-15 years, with some even reaching 17 years! 🎉🎈 With proper care, a balanced diet 🥩🥦, and regular exercise, they can enjoy a long and happy life with their families.

🔟 They’re Natural Comedians 🤣🐕
Boston Terriers have playful, goofy personalities and love making their owners laugh 😂. They’re known to be little clowns 🤡, often entertaining their families with silly antics, zoomies 🏃‍♂️💨, and their expressive faces.

With their charm, intelligence, and history of winning hearts—from Boston’s elite to Hollywood’s finest—it’s easy to see why the Boston Terrier remains one of the most beloved breeds! ❤️🐶🎩

NO DOGS WERE HURT IN THIS VIDEO!!!

Yesterday was CRAZY!! We took 3 girls for spay (Chalula, Sissy Girl, and Bubbles) and two boys for dog show preparation (during surgery time).
We ended up at Bradley Park (while the girls were with Dr Emerson & staff).
Gideon, the mini dachshund, has never been on a leash and Wyatt (boston terrier) was ready to ruuuuuuuun! Wyatt did not understand the job at hand. He came with me, to help Gideon with leash training.
After the walk, I was EXhausted! lol! It was like a day in boot camp!!
We started with a harness, for Gideon, which he quickly backed out of. The collar was a better deal, for day one.
He did so good, in the end.
*NO DOGS WERE HURT IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO!

Many don’t know this information! Remember every second matters during a choking incident.
1. Place the dog on their back. Brace the back against the floor. Straddle the dog while adjusting yourself based on the size of the dog. Position the head in “in-line position” with the airway parallel to the floor.
2. Make an open diamond shape with your hands. Place your thumbs on either side of the trachea below the ball or object. Grip the “V” of the jaw using lip/cheek to protect fingers.
3. Push with a J-stroke down and out against the ball until it ejects from the mouth.
Both this method and the Heimlich method has been proven to work in these scenarios so don’t hesitate to save your dog.

The “dog world” is seeing an influx of dogs/cats needing homes is highly reflective of 2020 shut down. There was literally nothing to spend money on but groceries and animals!
I am helping with a “Rehome Pet Site” and 75% of animals are born 2020/2021!

IF YOU DECIDE TO RESCUE, ASK QUESTIONS! An unvetted “cute colored frenchie equals $1000’s in vet bills, quickly.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE;

*Looking to re-home 2 loving female (DOODLES). They are from the same litter, and raised together. We would love to find them a home where they can remain sisters as they get anxious when separated.
-They are 4 years old, birthday June 4th 2020.

PURCHASED IN THE HEIGHT OF COVID!!

*An ideal home for them would be a caring family, or someone with a fenced in yard.

*They are not aggressive towards other animals, but would thrive best in a home with no other pets.

NO SOCIALIZATION, AS THEY WERE USED FOR TEMPORARY ENTERTAINMENT

*I am moving out (OF MY PARENTS HOUSE, NOW THAT I FOUND A MAN THAT DOESNT LIKE DOGS) I can no longer afford to care for them.

* I just want to find them someone who will love them as much as I have. FOR THE TIME THEY WERE USED, FOR PERSONAL LONELINESS.

Yes, I altered the text to reflect the TRUTH!!

I dont know what makes my heart hurt more, THE 1000’s of homeless animals, or the DOODLE back-yard-breeder.

During collaboration, with my breeder group, we talked about the novelty of”Guess Your Breed” test’s.
I’ve never found any validity to these novelty tests, as Im not a fan of POS impulse purchases.

As recently as last year, one of these tests taken by a human, described her breed as 40% Alaskan malamute, 35% shar-pei and 25% Labrador.
(Mar 19, 2024).
In 2016, I received a “free trial test” for my cat (Amazon) and felt it was a waste of time, when I noted the tests were being conducted at a POBOX.
I will share with you, a note written by an actual expert.

From UCDavis;

Dear Brenda Curtis,

We, too, have spent many hours explaining the DNA testing procedures, done by novelty type “Guess Your Dog’s Breed”.

The results of DNA tests from three different novelty companies are different. The results are different because each company is using a different reference panel.

The reference panel is a collection of DNA samples from dogs that are used to compare the DNA of a dog being tested. The reference panel is built by sequencing many dogs, so the results are more accurate as more dogs are sequenced.

These companies will become more accurate, as their database grows larger.

Please explore the different options for “breed testing”. If the client was using Embark (for example) then sent a sample to Wisdom, they may get the same results, since these two companies share data information.

I would take lightly to any tests done by novelty testing company’s.

If you have any more questions, give me a call directly at (503)752-2211.

02/20/2025

The poodle breed is currently facing serious challenges due to widespread misinformation, making it essential for us to intervene and share accurate and valuable information with the public. It's time to flood the media with facts, ensuring that the truth about breeding practices and the consequences of canine design trends reaches everyone.

The proliferation of 'Doodles' and ethical concerns

Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, Aussiedoodles, Cockapoos, Maltipoos - the list of poodle mixes continues to grow, fueled by the trend of "designer dogs." "While these mixtures are often marketed as hypoallergenic, low-maintenance pets, the reality is much more complex." The term "doodle" simply refers to any crossbreeding with a poodle, but it's essential to remember that these are not recognized breeds. They lack a normal health or temperament profile, which leads to unpredictable and often problematic outcomes.

The downside of mixed breeding.

While Doodles are marketed for their cute looks and "ideal" traits, the truth is that these hybrids are genetic, capricious jokers. Mixing a breed like the poodle, which has specific coat and energy needs, with another breed, such as a Bernese Mountain Dog or Golden Retriever, can result in health and behavioral problems that are difficult to predict or manage. The idea that a Doodle has the temperament of a breed with a poodle's hypoallergenic coat is misleading and scientifically incorrect.

Why the Doodle trend is unethical

The increasing popularity of Doodles has resulted in an increase in unethical breeding practices. Originally destined to create a low-cost working dog, Doodles are now quickly bred by those who prioritize profit over health and temperament. Wally Conron, the creator of the Labradoodle, has openly expressed regret, stating that he had "unleashed a Frankenstein" due to irresponsible breeders who followed in his footsteps. Many Doodle breeders are cutting corners, skipping essential health testing and disregarding the animals' long-term welfare.

One of the biggest problems with hybrid dogs like Doodles is that they can inherit the worst traits of both parent breeds. For example, crossing a poodle with a cancer-prone breed, such as the Bernese Mountain Dog, can result in a mix with an even higher predisposition to serious health problems. Furthermore, when mixed with energetic breeds such as Australian Shepherds or Labradors, the resulting puppies often require significant mental and physical stimulation — something many owners are unwilling to provide.

Health risks and temperament

Many Doodle breeders fail to properly screen for genetic disorders, which can lead to the proliferation of health problems across generations. Poodles already have their own genetic predispositions, and crossing them with breeds that present other health risks without testing exacerbates these problems. The result is often dogs with unpredictable health issues, many of which end up in shelters or suffer lifelong illnesses.

Temperature is equally concerning. When the breeding reproduces with different temperament traits, it becomes almost impossible to predict the behavior of the offspring. The result is often hyperactive, anxious that require more time, training, and resources than most homeowners expect.

The ethics of poodle breeding

Ethical breeding is about more than just producing puppies. It's all about protecting the integrity of a breed, ensuring that the dogs are healthy, temperamentally and raised in a safe and caring environment. Responsible breeders are dedicated to health testing, socialization and wellbeing of their dogs throughout their lives. They are committed to improving the race, not exploiting it for profit.

Unfortunately, many Doodle breeders do not follow these standards. They often charge exorbitant prices for mixed breed dogs while providing none of the health guarantees or ethical practices associated with responsible breeders. Consequently, these dogs, raised quickly to meet demand, are often overbred, in**ed and neglected in terms of healthcare and socialization.

The physical consequences of poor upbringing

Cross breeds with very different physical characteristics can result in structural problems in offspring. For example, mixing dogs with different bone structures, such as a poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog, can result in puppies with deformed bones and joints, which can cause mobility problems, arthritis and chronic pain. These physical problems are not only detrimental to the dog's quality of life, but also costly and difficult for owners to manage.

What defines an ethical breeder?

Ethical breeders prioritize the health and welfare of their dogs. They perform rigorous health testing, carefully select breeding pairs based on health, temperament, and breed standards, and provide comprehensive care to puppies and adult dogs in their program. Here are the key characteristics of responsible breeding:

- Breeding for the betterment of the breed: Ethical breeders aim to improve and protect their breed's lineage, not to produce mixed breeds for profit.

- Health Testing: Responsible breeders screen for hereditary traits and diseases to ensure only healthy dogs are bred.

- Comprehensive care: Ethical breeders ensure that all dogs are properly socialized, well-fed, groomed and nurtured in a nurturing environment.

- Lifelong support: a responsible breeder guarantees his puppies a home for life and serves as a resource to the owners throughout the dog's life.

Red flags to avoid when choosing a breeder because it is essential to be vigilant when choosing a breeders. Beware of breeders who:

- Use terms like "teacup" or "mini" because these criteria for miniaturization are not recognized.

- Selling puppies on websites, pet stores or third party platforms.

- Do not provide health tests or genealogical documentation.

- Don't want to facilitate a return deal if you can no longer take care of the dog.

Ethical breeders will always put the welfare of their dogs over profit, and they are transparent about their breeding practices. They will have a thorough knowledge of their breed and will be more interested in finding a good home for their puppies than making a quick sale.

Conclusion

While Doodles have gained popularity, they represent a disturbing trend of irresponsible breeding practices. The lack of standardization, health testing and ethical monitoring in breeding Doodle has resulted in a proliferation of unhealthy dogs and poor temperament. It's essential for future dog owners to do their research and consider adopting ethically raised purebred dogs that meet their needs rather than supporting the unethical Doodle industry.

If you are looking for a dog with a lively and cheerful temperament, sporty, affectionate, who doesn't lose his hair and will follow you on all your adventures for many years, then choose excellence and get a "real" poodle from a breeder who is committed to strict ethical standards for the health, happiness and longevity of your dogs!
