It's hard to leave your pets at home when you have errands to run, but being separated could cause your pet to become overly anxious. It's important to be aware of separation anxiety to help your pet overcome it.

Make sure to schedule an appointment with your VCA veterinarian to discuss how to handle your pet's separation anxiety.

Welcome back to our **Meet the Team Monday**! πŸ‘
This week, we're excited to introduce you to our ROCKSTAR Technician Supervisor, Cassie Jackson (aka CJ), RVTg, VTS! πŸ’₯πŸ‘

CJ’s journey in veterinary medicine began when she graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 2006. She didn't stop thereβ€”CJ earned her Registered Veterinary Technician License in 2011 and became a Veterinary Technician Specialist in 2022. Fun fact: she's the only person at VCA Ontario with that certification! Go, CJ! πŸŽ‰ She's also Fear Free & RECOVER certified, which is just one of the reasons we call her our Rockstar!

CJ's career started from the ground up; she began working as a Kennel Attendant at a general practice at just 15. In 2013, she joined California Veterinary Specialists and quickly made her mark. She's worked in every department imaginable, but her true passion lies in Emergency & Surgery. CJ became our CVS Technician Lead in 2015, was promoted to Technician Training Supervisor in April 2022, and recently, in early 2024, she stepped into the role of Emergency & Neurology Supervisor. She truly wears many hats, and our team and patients are incredibly grateful for all she does at CVS Ontario. CJ is passionate about critical patient care, especially in critical anesthetic cases, and loves guiding the team through complex thought processes.

When CJ isn't busy saving the day, one case at a time, she loves staying active! She's a fan of Pilates, spin classes, lifting weightsβ€”you name it, she's in! She also enjoys the great outdoors, whether she's hiking or participating in tough mudder events with her coworkers. A self-proclaimed sour candy lover, CJ's favorites include sour punch straws. Her favorite color is green, and she never misses an episode of *The Challenge* on MTV. CJ has two adorable furry friends: Phoenix, a beautiful 14-year-old Pitbull she rescued, and Porter, her lovely 7-month-old Dachshund.

We're so lucky to have CJ on our team!

Protecting animals’ paws during the summer heat is crucial for their well-being. Hot pavement and sand can reach temperatures that can cause burns and discomfort to their sensitive paw pads. Here are some tips to ensure paw protection:

1. **Walk During Cooler Times:** Schedule walks early in the morning or late in the evening when the ground is cooler.
2. **Check the Ground Temperature:** Before walking, test the ground with the back of your hand. If it’s too hot to touch for more than a few seconds, it’s too hot for your pet.
3. **Use Protective Booties:** Consider using pet booties to protect their paws from hot surfaces.
4. **Paw Wax:** Apply paw wax to create a barrier between their paws and the hot ground.
5. **Stay on Grass:** Walk on grassy areas whenever possible, as grass remains cooler than pavement.
6. **Hydration:** Ensure your pet stays hydrated, as this helps regulate their body temperature.
7. **Regular Paw Checks:** Inspect your pet’s paws for any signs of burns, blisters, or cuts and provide necessary first aid or consult a veterinarian if needed.

Taking these precautions can help keep your pet’s paws safe and comfortable during the summer months. If you’re caught in an emergency situation during the summer months, please contact California Veterinary Specialist in Ontario at 909-947-3600.

Wildfires often occur with little notice, which can make preparation a challenge. If you live in a wildfire-prone area, it’s important to create a safety plan for the two-legged and four-legged members of your family. You may only have minimal advance notice about evacuations, so planning in advance could be the difference between a successful evacuation and leaving necessary items behind. In the case of a medical emergency, please contact VCA California Veterinary Specialists Ontario at 909-947-3600.

⚠️ Heat Stroke Awareness ⚠️

What causes heat stroke?

The most common cause of heat stroke or hyperthermia is leaving a dog in a car with inadequate ventilation. The dog's body temperature in this situation can elevate very rapidly, often within minutes. Other common causes of heat stroke include being left in a yard without access to shade or water on a hot day, being exposed to a hair dryer for an extended period of time, and excessive or vigorous exercise during hot temperatures. Excited or excessively exercised dogs are sometimes at risk even if the environmental temperature and humidity does not seem high. This is particularly true if dogs are kept in a poorly ventilated environment or a dog house.

If you suspect your pet is having a heat stroke, please rush your pet to VCA California Veterinary Specialists Ontario.

Heatwaves affect not only us, but our pets as well. Brachycephalic breeds, obese pets, elderly pets, and pets with underlying medical conditions such as heart or lung disease could be at a higher risk for a heat stroke. It is important to keep this information in mind this summer and plan accordingly for your pet's safety! In the case of a medical emergency, please contact VCA California Veterinary Specialists Ontario at 909-947-3600.

This is your friendly reminder from VCA California Veterinary Specialists Ontario to make sure you are providing your pet with plenty of fresh, clean water at all times. πŸ’œπŸ’™

Your furry friends deserve the best care, and that starts with something as simple as fresh, clean water! πŸ’¦βœ¨

πŸ”Ή Why It's Important:
Health: Just like humans, pets need water for overall health, including proper digestion and maintaining body temperature.

Prevents Dehydration: Especially crucial during this hot weather, fresh water helps prevent dehydration, which can be dangerous for pets.

Improves Skin and Coat: Hydration helps keep your pet’s skin healthy and their coat shiny.
