What do you get when you cross a German Shepherd with a Standard Poodle? Monty! You also get an abundance of intelligence, drive and energy which have unfortunately resulted in some undesirable behaviours. His owners are working hard to harness these traits and I’m looking forward to seeing their progress 🙂

Today I am frustrated.

This morning I was at a large public beach with a client and her reactive dog. Within a few minutes of us being there, we were approached by an off leash dog. Luckily I was able to block the dog from getting too close to my client and her dog, but it easily could have turned into a dangerous situation. After the lesson, I took a different client’s dog for a walk. We barely made it past the beach entrance when again, we were approached by a second off leash dog. I was able to shoo this dog away and we proceeded on our walk. As we were leaving the beach, you guessed it, but this time we were rushed multiple times by a third off leash dog. I always try to keep a safe distance from unfamiliar dogs which just goes to show how far these dogs had to run to get to us. All three owners took their sweet time retrieving their dogs while trying the usual tricks to get them back - calling them over and over, scolding them, walking in the opposite direction and bribing them with treats or sticks. Normally I am quick to scold owners like this, but today I held my tongue because I didn’t feel like being sworn at or somehow made to feel like I am in the wrong for asking them to leash their dog.

Allowing your dog to run at large without a reliable recall is irresponsible dog ownership. You are putting your dog at risk of being hit by a car or being attacked/bit by the dog it approaches (friendly or not), possibly resulting in your dog becoming fear aggressive. Just like today, you might also be causing unnecessary stress for the other dog and their owner.

I would love to be able to take Sam to the beach down the road or hiking, but today has reaffirmed why I rarely do. Owning a reactive dog is already stressful and on days like today, it feels isolating.

If you don’t want to train your dog but still want to allow them some freedom, buy a long line! Your dog can safely run and explore which hopefully means mine can too 🙂

Frankie and her owner recently completed e-collar recall with me through . We were able to proof her recall off of a variety of temptations, including dogs, goose p**p and sticks. Enjoy your off leash freedom!

When Cupcake’s owner first contacted me, she was no longer able to walk her. Even on a prong collar, she was pulling to the point of causing her owner physical pain. After only one lesson and consistency from her owner, walks have gone from painful ➡️ enjoyable.

What helped?
✅Spatial pressure
✅Improving Cupcake’s engagement with her owner
✅Properly timed collar corrections

Meet Joey, a 2 year old Manchester Terrier. Joey is an overall insecure dog who has been resource guarding his male owner and who can be reactive to unfamiliar dogs and people.

Did you know that affection is a resource? Joey is very attached to his male owner and has lunged and nipped at his wife when she has moved towards him. Thankfully they are taking the necessary steps to prevent this behaviour from worsening, especially considering they have a young baby at home who will soon become mobile.

What’s the plan?
- Boosting Joey’s confidence so he can stand on his own! 💪🏻 He is too reliant on affection and reassurance from his male owner (he spent most of the consult trying to get into his lap) 🙈
- Improving the relationship he has with his owners so they become a better source of leadership and guidance
- Continued socialization and exposure to environmental stimuli 🐕🚗🏖🤹🏻
- Restricting Joey’s access to furniture and space in the home, especially when the female owner is present. The place command is perfect for this!
