Happy Friday Woodforest! You’re welcome! 😂
I use 3 min games to train dogs. They are fun and build an amazing relationship between you and your dog.
Also, you can use the games to grow concepts that you want to grow in your dogs brain. Things like, focus, attention, self-control, calmness, disengagement and so much more.
No matter what your dog's struggle - there's a game that can help. Raising my Corgi on games, meant that he had a rock solid recall and did amazingly at FCat and Agility. Whether you want a sports dog or just a lovely member of the family, games give your dog the skills to be a calm and confident member of your family.
Likki mats are an amazing way to add enrichment into your dogs life. Instead of gulping down a bowl of food in 5 seconds, they can take some time licking a mat to get every spec of food off!
Licking is like meditation for dogs, it calms them down, so if you want to grow the calmness concept in your dogs brain and have a puppy or dog that chooses a calmness way of life, use tools like likki mats to create that moment of calmness!
An awsome tool to help keep your dog happily occupied when your guest arrive, have your dog in a crate or closed off area so they don't get over excited running to the door and jumping all over your friends. Then to help them calm down and avoid frustration at not being able to jump on guests, give them a Likki mat while your guests arrive. Then later you can let them say a calm hello to people. This is just one of the many ways to use a Likki mat and to ditch the bowl and use food to create a calmness way of life.
Fast recall!
When training a fast reliable recall, it helps to break the behaviour down. First your dog goes away from you - then you want a fast and snappy bounce back! I use my dogs food for this game, start as I did in the video close to a corner, as you progress you can move a little further away. Throw a treat or a piece of your dogs food into the corner, they have no choice but to turn around and come back to you, when they reach you say - yes - and as a reward throw another piece of food out.
You don't need to ask them to come.
You don't need to say anything but good or yes when they come back
If they hesitate, just wait for them to come back
Make sure you wait for them to come all the way back to you before you throw out food again, see in the video how I wait for him to come really close!
Most importantly - HAVE FUN!
This game reinforces the little tunnel in your dogs brain that says, "bounce back to the mama, she's the best!" Such an amazing game for puppies but any age that wants to sharpen up that recall or just have a little fun and work on relationship.
Later you can add a cue - say their name, or say come, just as or just after they turn to come back.
